Dictionary of Intermediate Japanese Grammar arranged in dictionary format and accompanied by rich example sentences that will help students of this book be able to acquire the necessary knowledge to master intermediate Japanese
Excellent reference for beginner-high intermediate students of Japanese. I'm looking forward to the Dictionary of Advanced Japanese that this author has said he's writing...
Used this book as a reference when studying for Level 2 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test with my partner. We were using Kanzen Masutaa's grammar prep book and this came in very handy when trying to grasp the nuances of the grammar points we were crunching. I still refer to this book occasionally when an expression comes my way that I haven't encountered before.
This is the second book in the series. Basically it is exactly the same as Dictionary of Basic Japanese except that it has different points that are meant for higher level Japanese (as the name of the book would suggest)
This is the second book in a series of three grammar dictionaries of Japanese grammar. This explores intermediate level grammar, and is basically a carbon copy of the first book in terms of formatting and style, minus one important aspect--NO ROMAJI! (At least, on the example sentences, which was where it annoyed me most anyway. But it is still used in the 'Notes' section of the grammar.) Thank goodness!
You can find my review of the first book here, where my review is effectively the same for this book.
As a reminder, this isn't a textbook, but a reference book. For JLPT level, I'd say this covers N3, with some of N2. This is the level where your understanding of content starts to really soar, and you can really start enjoying consuming content.
PROS: -The grammar is listed in English alphabetical order, so it's easy to look up whatever you may be looking for. -Similar grammar is compared and contrasted with, to help you understand minute differences. -The book is well organized and works fine enough to either use as a reference, or read straight through like me, haha. -Did I mention there's no romaji? Because there's no romaji :) -Furigana is used throughout, but instances of close repetition, there is no furigana, which I appreciated. -Additional appendixes go into more detail about grammar with many more example sentences. -The Japanese index at the back includes page numbers for grammar in both this book and the previous beginner book, which makes things even easier to find and look up.
CONS: -This was the first I've ever seen this in any grammar book, but on page 300, part of the grammar explanation for something was explained as, "[This use case] is unacceptable for some unknown reason." Like...what? XD More interesting than a con, but figured I'd list it. -While the defaulting the reader as male was still there, it wasn't as prevalently used, but still irksome to see. (Though I did see at least once instance of "s/he" used, which is progress.) -The price can be quite high. I lucked out and found this at a used Japanese book store. Though I do think it's worth the investment. It's not a requirement, there are loads of ways to learn languages for free, but if you need the extra assistance, I say try to get it if you can! -I found a few misspellings, but nothing major or impactful.
But really, this book is great! I don't think you /have/ to go out of your way to get these books, but man if they aren't really handy to have. I'd say it's worth considering if you have the funds for it! (And if you don't, I've seen them around elsewhere. Is all I'll say :P)
I'd definitely love to get my hands on the third one one day. :)
[Copy-pasted from my review of the Basic Japanese Grammar volume, as my opinion really applies to the books as a complete set.] As a dictionary, I hope it's obvious that I did not literally read this as I would a novel. I've turned to it (and its two accompanying volumes) countless times since I first purchased it, and it's proven itself worth the investment! Japanese language learners of any level, beginning to advanced, should find it a very useful companion to their main studies. There are in-depth explanations of all the grammar and plenty of example sentences and clarification points for each dictionary entry, plus additional information at the beginning and in the appendices. If you're serious about learning Japanese, this book is a must-have!
Once again, this is the best series for students of Japanese grammar. The grammatical explanations are in-depth and very well written. There are numerous examples for every single grammatical pattern, each with very well explained definitions. One wishes that those who write grammar books for other languages would look to this series for inspiration.
Formatted identically to the Advanced version, covering grammar points likely familiar from the third or fourth year of a university Japanese program. Includes concise explanations and examples, followed by a more in-depth explanation on formation and usage.
This, along with A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar, was an optional text for my 4th year Japanese class. Both books give detailed and succinct explanations. I found them extremely helpful whenever I ran across a grammar pattern I didn't recognize in newspaper articles or literature excerpts.
I love this and the basic book that preceded it. I learned more Japanese grammar from these than from any textbook, bar none. I just found out there is an advanced book and went immediately to snatch it up too!
