Peig Sayers: Labharfad Le Cách = I Will Speak to You All

Rate this book
This book is a celebration of the renowned Irish storyteller Peig Sayers, showing a lighter side to her than previously revealed. For generations of students, Peig Sayer's autobiography was a compulsory text on the Irish Leaving Certificate. But there was a lot more to Peig than tales of poverty and hardship. In this collection of previously unpublished stories, an earthier, funnier, and more dramatic storyteller emerges. Based on RTE and BBC archives, and translated by Ireland's leading experts on Peig, the book also includes two CDs with archived recordings of Peig's storytelling.

Seanchaí agus dírbheathaisnéisí Éireannach ab ea í Peig Sayers (1873 - 1958).

Tháinig Peig Sayers ar an saol i nDún Chaoin, baile beag i gContae Chiarraí, Éire. Phós sí Pádraig Ó Gaoithín ón mBlascaod Mór, agus d'aistrigh sí ansin leis. Ní raibh léamh ná scríobh aici, ach seanchaí den scoth ab ea í. Ba dual athar di é, nó nuair a bhí sí óg, chluineadh sí na mílte scéalta agus eachtraí á n-insint ag a hathair agus é ag déanamh airneáin le fir an bhaile. Dheachtaigh sí a cuid scéalta do Sheosamh Ó Dálaigh ó Choimisiun Bealoideasa Eireann. Tá cáil uirthi de bharr a dírbheathaisnéise, Peig. B'é a mac, Micheál, a bhreac an scéal síos uaithi, agus foilsíodh an leabhar sa bhliain 1936. Tá an leabhar ar bharr a theanga ag gach duine a thóg scrúdú Gaeilge na hArdteistiméarachta.

Bhí Peig Sayers ina conaí ar an oileán go dtí an bhliain 1953, nuair a tréigeadh na Blascaodaí ar fad. Bhog sí go dtí ospidéal an Daingin. Fuair sí bás ansin sa bhliain 1958, agus tá sí curtha i reilig Dhún Chaoin.

THis is the wonderful true story of a woman Peg Sayers who
grew up as a poor girl on the Dingle peninsula, then married
a Blasket Island Man. Living there she bore many children
and lived a spartan life on those islands. The story is so
REAL and moving and makes me realize our modern lives are very
spoiled and silly. I am reading it slowly. I bought it at the
Great BLasket Center on the DIngle peninsula last weekend while
we were on holiday. IT is a gorgeous, bleak place. No one lives
on the islands any more, and it is hard to imagine the austere
lives they led without any comforts or medicine. these were tough
people.

Críochnaithe agam cúpla mí ó shin, ach rinne mé dearmad léirmheas a thabhairt fuithi. Is deacair é le thuiscint an fuath atá ann go forleathan don leabhar seo. An raibh daoine ag maslú í díreach mar gheall go raibh orthu Peig a léamh sa scoil? Dála an scéal, sin an freagra ceart. Ní deacair é le fheiceáil cén fáth gur roghnaíodh é mar ábhar scoile ag an am céanna, mar tá an méid sin crá, solabharthacht agus áilleacht le fheiceáil i bhfocail tras-scríofa Peig ná formhór de phrós an Bhéarla. Léiriú thar a bheith láidir den doimhneas agus cumas filíochta atá laistigh den Ghaeilge. Frásaí atá mar bunclocha de Gaeilge cruinn sa lá atá inniú ann, chomh maith le blas álainn de Ghaeilge na Bhlascaoide - canúint Mumhan mo laoch 's mo stór (tar éis canúint Ulaidh ar ndóigh)!
