Jacob Grove grew up in a house that looked like it swallowed Versailles, well not quite that big, but it was an impressive estate on the water in Kingspoint, New York. Every year his parents, Peggy and Daniel Grove had a small Halloween party. In 1992 due to unforeseen circumstances, the party was canceled. The circumstances were that a neighbor plowed Daniel over with his Ferrari while he was bent over picking up dog poop. It was the dog's last poop, and as it turned out, it was Daniel's last poop as well. This calamitous situation kept Jacob from having his first date with, Hannah O’Brien the woman he marries 22 years later. They live in the suburbs and have a little family. Hannah’s finds out her first husband has started a natural medicine company, which she suspects is merely snake oil. She suspects wrong.
This book will feel like old home week for anyone from Philadelphia. The city is as much a character here as any of the people. The book examines setting and characters as an artist examines their subject, quite apt for a book about artists.
The character-driven book begins as art student Hannah navigates early relationships, art, and her eroded confidence in herself. But buckle up, because things take a wildly surreal turn when she starts a family in the burbs.
I enjoyed the book mostly because I’m from the area the story takes place. Unfortunately, my book’s Chapter 54 was a repeat of 53 so I missed a chunk of the story. It was a good story, but a little disjointed, but that could be because of the missing chapter.
If you had children after you turned 40, if you lived in philly in the 90s or if you have an artist’s spirit I think you might enjoy this book. I wrote it, so it’s tacky I’m sure to write a review, but I can live with that. I poured my soul into this book and I tried to make it beautiful, and honest, through and through. If you chose to read it I’d love to hear your thoughts or answer any questions.
