There is more going on at Hanging Hill Lane than simple mass killings.
Daphne Locke, eighteen and alone, is back in her old childhood house as a sequence of brutal killings moves closer. Powerless policemen break down and cry, tortured by the most horrific crimes they have ever seen.
Murders are not the only darkness on the street. Creepy neighbours act impossibly. Dogged Jehovah’s Witnesses prophesy and stalk. Daphne wonders if she’s going mad, or if there truly is something real and insidious at play.
Perhaps the fresh grief of her mother’s death is testing her sanity. Perhaps her childhood night terrors were real. Perhaps rumours of the supernatural at Hanging Hill Lane were true all along. What a terrible time for a killer to come knocking.
First off, congratulations to Philip Alexander Baker on his debut! It’s a huge accomplishment and, from one horror author to another, I wish you the best of luck! Ok, now to the review…I liked it. And I think as Baker continues honing in on his craft, he’ll only improve and get better and better with each story. And this was a tremendous start in that journey. The story created this aura of uncertainty and creepiness throughout and kept me guessing until the end. And there was a lot going on, too, especially towards the latter portion. The beginning took a little time to find its footing, but got there in a good amount of time. I wanted a little more of Daphne’s grief for her mother earlier on, and wished the overall pacing of the story was adjusted a bit. It just felt like there were some points when the story was rushing too quickly for its own good, but not enough to hurt the overall experience. But this was a solid debut and this is one author to keep your eye on.
This story had the potential to be really good but, for some reason or another, it never achieved that goal. In some ways the plot was rather naive. We had a recently orphaned teenage girl being harassed by demons, witches, deranged religious fanatics and a totally clueless police force. True, the tale was creepy and as the body count grew the tension increased exponentially. Unfortunately, the story lacked that magical ingredient that would have made it stand out from the crowd. I realise that this was the author's first novella and look forward to reading his subsequent efforts.
This book creates a sense of unease and tension. My imagination ran wild as this house left me feeling claustrophobic. I loved how Philip brought the dynamics of family relationships, adding that nice emotional layer. The pacing is just right with the tensions gradually climbing, keeping me on the edge of my seat.
I do wish that a few plot lines were more explored to give me that deeper understanding but overall a nice spine-chilling read!
”First it killed the five who lived at ten. The four at eight were next to die, and then The three at six were nailed to their door, Then darkness came to take the two at four. So now it falls to me to bring to you… The story of the single girl, Alone at number Two.”
After the recent death of her Mother, Daphne Locke has returned to stay at her childhood home on Hanging Hill Lane, alone. She soon finds out from local police that there has been a spate of murders in the area, inside different homes on the street. The death and despair seems to be moving closer and the police are powerless to stop. Daphne feels truly alone and creeped out by some of the people in her neighbourhood, especially some older women who seem to be keeping an eye on her. Every time the doorbell rings, and it rings often, Daphne feels uneasy. But are the horror on the outside of her home, or might they already be inside?
”The House On Hanging Hill Lane” is the first horror novella by Philip Alexander Baker and it’s a good first effort! I have a feeling he will only get better from here. Intrigue is built well throughout this story. It had almost a folk horror feel, with the main character being alone surrounded by weird, suspicious characters. And with the hare motif aswell. I wanted a short horror book that I could read in one afternoon and this was a fine choice. A solid, 4 star, quick read.
I was hoping to get scared; someone said this book was scary. There were parts where I was mentally on the edge of my seat, which is awesome for me! That's as close to being scared as I ever get (I think I'm broken).
One star off because for some reason the characters lacked depth, and I don't know why. I also needed more regarding the mom. Also, the language was strange to me for cultural reasons. I'm American and maybe the author is British because I didn't understand some of the phrasing and even wondered if there were typos. Overall, not a big deal.
The ending, I loved the ending! It was totally unexpected and I was smiling when I figured out what was going on. I went in to this book hoping to be scared and came out with a warm, happy feeling. Weird 😁
If you want a quick creepy and murder filled afternoon read, this is the one for you! It’s a great length for there to be substance but not make you bored or lose interest!
This was a spell binding supernatural murder mystery!!! There were moments of extreme terror while I was reading, and the body count really racked up!!
Hopefully there will be a second book in the series as I have a feeling things are far from settled down at Hanging Hill Lane.
I loved the spooky, yet murderous supernatural horror element - but, yet, at the end it turned fun for me. Awesome little novella! I recommend this one for sure. Go grab it!
I wanted to love this book. The story had potential but was poorly executed. The characters lacked development and personality. The main character is a typical shy "different" teenage girl, portrayed through the eyes of someone who clearly can not relate. Typical corrupt male cop and likewise, a typical good-hearted one to offset him. The story had no flow, and the writing seemed forced. The vocabulary was basic and not in an "easy-reading" way. I will say the ending tied everything together well, but it was anticlimactic. Elaboration was lacking in places to add substance while simultaneously drawing out scenes that could have been omitted. Overall, I would describe the book as being amateur and unoriginal, with the potential to be developed into a gripping story.
Short and creepy, this novella alternates very skillfully everyday moments with sudden creepiness and fear.
I felt connected to Daphne which comes back to her childhood house where she used to live with her mum, now dead. As she's trying to grieve, families on her lane start to be brutally murdered house by house until it's her turn.
Although short I thought the characters were well depicted. In addition, the whole story is written in a cinematic way and you can picture in your mind what happens as you read it.
The only downside was the ending for me. It felt a bit rushed and the level of fear and creepiness built up until that moment was suddenly turned off by how the events turned out to be.
Even so, I highly recommend it as I enjoyed it and I have to admit I will never look into my front door spy hole comfortably ever again!
This is Phil’s debut, although he has written more since, and I will definitely be picking those up and reading them as soon as I can. This story had an immediately creepy and eerie feel that continued throughout. The imagery Phil describes is crystal clear, and there were also a few little jump scares thrown in which I loved. If you can pull off a jump scare in a book, full credit to you!
This is a story of a girl forever feeling invisible, yet not wanting to be seen or to be acknowledged. She has always been happy blending into the background, until now! Now she wants to be seen, to be heard, but is it too late?
Daphne is moving home after the death of her mother, back to Number 2 Hanging Hill Lane, watched by her neighbours and full of sadness, grief and trepidation. She's all alone now and the houses are old and full of dark histories. Her neighbours are acting weird and after the murders of a family a few doors away, Daphne is left feeling on edge, and this only increases rapidly as time goes on.
Things continue to get weirder in the street, even police protection doesn't help, in fact, it just seems to make things worse. And then the night terrors kick in, or is it more than that? Finally, she's left alone, no one wants to be where the bad stuff keeps happening, not her friends or the police and they end up securing her in the house and leaving. Boarding all the windows and doors, to keep the killers out, but could they already be inside? What secret is the house hiding?
After a night full of horrific, shocking and terrifying incidents inside the house, Daphne finally discovers her true self! And it's empowering and scary stuff!
My only complaint about this book is that I wish it had been longer. I'd have loved for it to have gone more in depth into what was going on and why, because I really enjoyed it but I felt like it was all over far too quickly..
The book was a neat horror story based around a young woman moving back to her childhood home. Her timing couldn't be any worse - there is a murderer on the loose, and is killing the families on the street, getting closer and closer to her house. Everything and everyone around her is acting weird first, and then slowly it all turns creepy, then menacing, then outright scary. The book had a lot of highlights that i enjoyed, sometimes the simplest things send chills up your spine. Proper chills. I felt that the book could be well suitable for a new adult audience as it is a bit of a coming of age story of a young woman finding her path. Still great for us older folks too. I enjoyed it and would definitely recommend the book.
18 year old Daphne Locke has just lost her mother and inherited a house in one fell swoop. The house holds so many childhood memories, but all is not as it seems on Hanging Hill Lane.
A fantastic debut from Phil Baker that combines strong female characters, unsettling scenes and family secrets to create a wonderfully creepy tale of friendship, loss and battling ones demons. This story utilises creepy imagery rather than gore to set the scene which makes it ideal for both YA or those who want to dip their toe into the horror pool. Seasoned horror readers will find something here to whet their appetite as well! There's huge scope for a follow up book or potentially a series here and I hope we see a lot more work from Phil in the future! Highly recommend!!
Just finished THE HOUSE ON HANGING HILL LANE by Phil Baker! This gripping novella takes us on an emotional rollercoaster with Daphne, an eighteen-year-old who inherits her childhood home after the death of her mother. But as strange things begin to happen in the neighborhood and a mysterious killer starts wreaking havoc, Daphne finds herself drawn into a world of terror and uncertainty.
The supernatural elements are seamlessly woven into the plot, leaving you wondering if the rumors of the supernatural at Hanging Hill Lane were true all along. And just when you think you have everything figured out, Baker throws in a surprising twist that will leave you breathless.
What I loved most about this novella was the strong lead at its heart. Daphne is smart, determined, and resilient, even in the face of unimaginable horrors. She's a true survivor, and her journey from grief and solitude to self-discovery is both inspiring and emotional. And let's not forget about the creepy old ladies, the power-hungry policemen, and the Jehovah's Witnesses who add an extra layer of unease to an already suspenseful story.
If you're a fan of horror and supernatural stories, this is a must-read. But even if you're not, I think you'll find something to enjoy in this well-crafted debut from Phil Baker. With its strong female characters, eerie imagery, and family secrets, it's a wonderfully creepy tale that will stay with you long after you've finished reading.
A teenager moves into her old childhood home on Hanging Hill Lane. Her neighbors act strangely, appearing and disappearing in a blind k of an eye staring at her, staring at number 2 of Hanging Hill. Then the brutal murders start baffling law enforcement and causing terror in the small neighborhood.
This book definitely has a creepy factor and keeps you guessing to the very end. The characters don't seem to react and respond very realistically, but even so, their frenzied actions aids in building tension and raising the hairs on the back of your neck. I wasn't as fully invested in the characters as I would have liked, but it didn't make me enjoy the story any less. The writing style is very unique, artistic even, painting a picture in the reader's head in a very different way. I definitely Italy recommend it and look forward to reading forthcoming books from Philip Baker.
I was lucky enough to be gifted a copy of Philip Baker's novella, The House on Hanging Hill Lane, and can’t wait to leave a review! The book is not simply a horror story but an emotional rollercoaster! It goes from grief, to solitude, to terror, back to grief and eventually to the sheer joy of self-discovery. From the very beginning, there’s an aura of uneasiness and impending doom, as Daphne, the eighteen-year-old protagonist of the story, goes back to her mother’s house; she inherited it when her mother passed away and has to cope with all the complexities of such an unfortunate situation. On top, however, weird and nasty things start happening in the neighborhood, as a mysterious killer starts massacring families on Daphne’s street, keeping her house for last. (Baker has a creepy poem opening the book, predicting what’s happening quite accurately.) The police get involved, strange old ladies start appearing and disappearing, the atmosphere gets more and more emotionally charged, until things erupt into a phantasmagoric spook show, and we reach the surprising twist at the end. I really enjoyed this book, and was impressed with how easily Baker brought the supernatural into the story and made it, by the end, seem so normal in context. Daphne has completed her troubled journey and it was exactly what it needed to be. But wait – what’s that poem in the last page? It seems there’s more to the story!
What a great first book for Philip Alexander Baker. I can’t wait to see what he writes next (hopefully The House on Hanging Hill Lane becomes a series 🤞) I actually binged this, there was enough twists and turns to keep the interest well and truly sparked. I was left guessing all the way to the end as not to much was revealed in one big hit, everything was all timed very well.
This is the weirdest book I've ever read, but it legitimately gave me nightmares. Not very many Horror books have achieved that. Usually, that would make this a 5-star book for me. I'd put it on my favorite shelf, but the ending just wasn't for me. 4.5/5
I really enjoyed the start of this one, right up until maybe 3/4 in. It was so creepy, and I genuinely had no idea what was going on. But then the last bit just got weird; introducing witches and demons. I felt like the ending needed a bit more.
I seriously felt paranoid throughout this whole book, like any little noise I heard, I jumped! I also felt grossed out in certain parts, like nobody better lick me! This book was such an engrossingly fast and easy read. This was my first time reading this author and it WON’T be the last. Such an amazing read! Thank you so much for the book I received for a review. I am totally going to find the rest of the series! 😈👻😈👻😈👻😈👻😈👻😈👻😈👻😈👻
This is an indie debut novella and is out on kindle on Saturday 4th February. I was sent a copy to review.
Daphne is reluctantly moving back to her childhood home following the death of her Mother, the neighbours are acting suspiciously, the lane feels heavy and foreboding and then the murders start, the deaths are horrific and as her neighbours are picked off around her Daphne’s turn is coming fast. Is the killer more than human? What haunts the lane? Why is everyone acting so strangely?
This is a fast paced supernatural horror novella and I loved the story. Daphne faces the bizarre things happening around her initially by pretending they’re not as they seem, rationalising the weirdness, keeping her emotions in check as her mother taught her. The strangeness of the people on the street and their actions and reactions are unnerving and unsettling whilst at the same time the familiarity as she moves around and interacts with her childhood home is cosy and comforting, it’s so well done.
Within the first chapter you get the mood of Hanging Hill Lane, creepy, otherworldly, uncanny, the atmosphere is one of creeping danger. Its name, Hanging Hill, for the witches who were hanged there centuries ago but someone on the lane remembers. A great eerie read.
unfortunately I did not enjoy this book. It was advertised as scary and creepy and I did not find that at all. Maybe it’s because I’ve read scarier and creepier things 🤔 I also found the wording to be very choppy. There was a lot of very short sentences and that just really threw off the flow for me. This is definitely a book I should have DNF’d and I didn’t because of the length. I thought it would really pick up since it was a novella and it didn’t. The ending was very anticlimactic for me and I did not enjoy it. This was just not the book for me.
I rarely give this low of stars, but this book warranted it. I gave it a try based on ppl recommending it in a horror group on FB. The premise isn’t bad, but the writing was atrocious. I don’t know how to put into words, it was just as if a 7th grader wrote the story. Juvenile, basic, simple minded…..It definitely lacked maturity, tone, character development, and flow. I literally cringed as I read certain parts. Disappointed to say the least
I didn't think I had a trigger till now. But it turns out I do.. Grief... grief is my trigger and this story made me cry my eyes out when, in a few words, it described everything I have been feeling during the weekend. I have recently lost my dad so this story really hit the soft spot. But it helped me a little too, seeing the main character finally moving on over her grief and being okay at the end.
Wow! A fast paced novella with an impressive plot that I had no choice but to allow to cancel my plans and finish in one fantastic reading!
The atmospherics generated from the repetition of the prose is fantastic - it gives all you want, and more on how the plight impacts the principal character - her backstory isn’t important; what awaits her is
I wanted to like this novella. It had potential to be an amazing story about isolation. Instead it’s too fast with little space for the reader to get to know anyone.
Mysterious deaths, weird neighbors and the single girl, alone at number Two… ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🚪👻 The House on Hanging Hill Lane by Philip Alexander Baker 👻🚪
In a small quaint town in the British countryside, Daphne has returned to her childhood home after the untimely death of her mother. Broken by her loss, she is left to return as was her mother’s most frequent request if something was to happen to her. Being fresh into adulthood, she is not wholly aware of what to do or how to feel. After her first night back, a family is murdered at the head of the lane - and the police cannot locate the killer. The people and occurrences in the neighborhood seem to take a sudden and frightening turn shortly after that. The police are acting weird, too. When Daphne starts to sense she truly isn’t alone, she begins to question herself and most of all, her sanity. Is this a case of mass hysteria, or is something more serious and sinister at play?
I really enjoyed this debut by Baker! I am a hardcore w****e for anything that has even the slightest hint of the supernatural. There was a very direct message in the character development that I also see as very important: To not go through life being invisible. You make your life what it is. This was a very interesting take and was perfect in the novella formatting (<250 pages) The format enabled the story to take off, fly and land in a seamless fashion and didn't need any embellishments. My final thought: When do we get a sequel?!
“There’s no greatest hits show at the end, just a clear picture of how one’s entire life really is.”
