Jenna Black is your typical writer. Which means she's an "experience junkie." She got her BA in physical anthropology and French from Duke University.

Once upon a time, she dreamed she would be the next Jane Goodall, camping in the bush making fabulous discoveries about primate behavior. Then, during her senior year at Duke, she did some actual research in the field and made this shocking discovery: primates spend something like 80% of their time doing such exciting things as sleeping and eating.

Concluding that this discovery was her life's work in the field of primatology, she then moved on to such varied pastimes as grooming dogs and writing technical documentation. She writes paranormal romance for Tor and urban fantasy for Bantam Dell.

Not what I've expected

This is a short story. More like a pre-series that is tell by Ethan's little sister,, ops,, I mean,, Kimber.
Yep,, Ethan is the wonder boy of the family with his magic and charm,, Kimber is just the brains.
It has fairies in it, but also the best teddy bear fight scene ever.
Really funny and terrifying at the same time.
And ,, there is Ethan
Sorry Kimber, but I just got goo-goo eyes for your brother,, its not my fault he is ,, well,, Ethan

Well,, lets see what the next book'll tell us =D

****

Remedial Magic by Jenna Black

4 stars

Kimber is tired of being under her brother, Ethan's shadow. She's two years younger than Ethan enrolled in college and he is still considered the genius. I really liked Kimber. She was funny and I felt sorry for her. It must suck to have a brother like Ethan and to constantly be overlooked. I do plan on reading the Faeriewalker series for sure now. I really liked the way Black writes and the concept of the city of Avalon is quite fascinating. A town that's not quite in the faerie world but not quite in the human world. Sounds fun!

Whimsical Writing Scale: 4

Character Scale: 4

Plotastic Scale: 4

Cover Thoughts: The cover is really pretty. I actually really like the covers for this series, even the novella cover.

Being a big fan of the Faeriewalker series, I was anxious and excited when I discovered Remedial Magic. I quickly got it and read it in one sitting, which is easy since it is only a few pages long. But that’s what a short story is, right!

I enjoyed having new insight into Kimber’s character. I enjoyed feeling her emotions towards herself and her brother. It was a nice break from the nonstop action we are used to in the Faeriewalker world.

After a moment, I was shot back into the Faeriewalker world and loved being there. Once the story got going, the exhilarating and exciting action didn’t stop. The concept is a bit odd, but entertaining nonetheless. Remedial Magic is a great story to read while you are waiting for the next book in the Faeriewalker series.

Gives a whole new light on the "Teddy Bear Picnic"

For those that have read Jenna Black's Glimmerglass, you will recognize our first person protagonist this time around as Kimber, Ethan's little sister. Kimber is 15 years old, very smart (already in college), and desperately wanting her father's attention, but her father values magical talents (such as the ones Ethan can wield with ease) over her mental abilities. So she invites her friend Dee Dee over to try to help Kimber with magic. Things quickly go awry when Kimber tries to levitate teddy bears and the teddy bears become...ALIVE!
This short story is a perfect introduction to the character of Kimber and definitely makes her a much more sympathetic character (not that she wasn't already from Glimmerglass). I totally understood Kimber's desire to find her own niche, to get her dad to appreciate her for her own talents, and her resentment to her brother for tending to supersede her. Kimber also gels well with her personification in Glimmerglass.
The only other characters to appear are Ethan and Dee Dee. Ethan felt well done, definitely like his Glimmerglass personification, but a little more carefree and girl-crazy, as expected from the viewpoint of his knowing sister. Dee Dee was cool, partly because she is another Faerie, and even in Glimmerglass, you don't get to see all that many Faeries. Too bad she doesn't do more in this short story (though how that would happen without totally dragging the story...).
The story itself was poignant. Kimber learns the hard way to appreciate herself for who she is and to stop trying to be what she isn't. I also liked that she was a little selfish (not telling her brother and father she didn't really like Teddy Bears because she wanted her dad's affections in any way). I hate characters that come off as too perfect or not age appropriate (what teenager wouldn't want the attention of her parents?).
This story happens before the events of Glimmerglass, but don't think you have to read the novel before reading the short story. The two obviously work well together, but Remedial Magic could be read without the novel because it provides most of the backstory necessary for the plot.
Black's writing was great. She balanced perfectly between description (what is Faerie, what is Avalon, who are the characters, etc.) and action (trying out magic, the attack of the teddy bears, etc.).
The language is rather strong with two sh*gs, a sh*t, and two da**s. Considering the short story is about five clicks long, that is an awful lot.
Overall, I rather enjoyed this short story. I highly recommend, particularly if you have A) read Glimmerglass and liked it, B) read Glimmerglass and wanted to know more about Kimber or C) wanted to know if Glimmerglass is worth the time without spend a lot of money.

This was a kindle freebie and so I said why not! This is a prequel to Glimmer Glass

It was a short story where we meet Kimber a very smart teen who has skipped a few grades and is now in college. Apparently she is over shadowed by her not as smart yet very magically talented brother Ethan. She asks one of her friends to come over and give her magical tutorials but it kind of turns into a hot mess.

Along with the short story you get chapter 1 of Glimmer Glass where we are introduced to Dana and her story.

I rated this a two stars/just ok, because although it was cute, the story wasn't long enough to really get to know the characters well. Not only this I didn't see the connection between Kimber, Ethan and Dana. Maybe it will be revealed later on in the series but the way it was done just didn't do it for me. I think perhaps this should have been a short that comes between book one and another book in the series.

This is a 14 page prequel to Glimmerglass. Not much happens during this short except some magic gets shorted out producing the attack of the killer teddy bears. Teddy Bear attack is averted when the ever gorgeous Ethan comes around.

That's it, that's all. Lucky it was a free download.

Also included are the prologue and first Chapter of Glimmerglass.

A short story prequel involving a spell that goes awry turning teddy bears into bloodthirsty killers. Not much to it really but figured I'd warm up to Kimber in the book although when I tried to read the prologue and first chapter of Glimmerglass that was included I didn't get very far. It's based on an entirely different and unrelated protagonist with a dysfunctional mother. I have no interest in reading that whatsoever.

As a teen genius who has skipped grades ahead to become a college student while her older and magically talented brother is still stuck in high school, Kimba may in any normal family be considered the favoured child. But Kimba is a faerie and her family is not normal. Kimba has always lived in the shadow of her scarily talented older brother Ethan and despite her impressively high academic scores she is seen as the family embarrassment due to her lack of magical abilities. However Kimba is determined to change all that.

Remedial Magic steps back into the life of Kimba, Dana's faerie best friend, to a time before Dana had ever step foot into Avalon and discovered her Faeriewalker ways. As an attempt at making a new friend, as well as an experiment in magic, Kimba engages a classmate to assist with a spell, however when things go terrible wrong, Kimba is given yet one more reason to detest/admire her brothers abilities. An enlightening short story looking at sibling rivalry, the practice of magic and a collection of teddy bears.

Remedial Magic was so much fun. It is a brief story about Kimber’s attempt to practice magic. It can be read without reading Glimmerglass, the first book in the Faeriewalker series, but it is better read after just to get the full context. All readers need to know is that Kimber and Ethan are siblings, both Fae, who live in Avalon.

The story gives you a bit more insight into Kimber, which explains a lot about her personality when we meet her in Glimmerglass.

This story also makes her much more likable, as you get to see the struggles she goes through having limited magical capability, a mother who left her and a brother who can’t seem to do anything wrong and steals away all her friends. But the best “laugh out loud” parts of the story are the killer teddy bears. They alone make this worth the read.

It’s a free story, a quick read, and a delightful way to spend a Friday!

So, this was free on B&N's store and I'd already seen the first book so I decided to go ahead and read this one to decide for sure if I wanted to read Glimmerglass. SOLD! I love that Kimber is trying to improve herself and will work to do it right from the beginning! No fake "fast-track" help for her. Kimber starts out with a depth not usually seen in 15 year olds, an understanding about not only her family but of how other people work. Fantastic--I've already purchased Glimmerglass! :)

Remedial Magic is quite a bit shorter than most "short" stories I've read (usually closer to 40 pages, give or take some) but it's definitely a nice draw in for the series (which I'm hoping is just as good) AND Remedial Magic was free--no reason not to try it out! :)

An interesting story from the perspective of my favorite Faeriewalker character, Kimber. I wouldn't have read it, though, if I hadn't downloaded iBooks (love this app, for serious) on my brand spankin' new iPod Touch and found this as a freebie. I do so love freebies.

This story doesn't really distinguish itself much, other than in illustrating that Kimber is great, but there is one thing I marked with that snazzy little bookmarky thingy:

"This was what I called the Ethan Effect, when perfectly sensible girls' brains turn to useless mush."
Ah, so good to see someone comment on it. If only Edward Cullen had a Kimber to regard him with scorn.

I know this was supposed to be a short story, but I guess I just wasn't expecting it to be quite so short for some reason. Oh well! It was a well written addition to the series, and a nice glimpse into the relationship between Kimber and Ethan. It's not really a necessity in the series as far as storyline goes but I'd definitely recommend it to a fan.

Super short (less than twenty pages) hence only three stars. Nicely enough, it featured my favorite Fae from Glimmerglass, Kimber, as a younger version of herself and struggling with basic magic skills. A fun, free ebook that is read in ten minutes, easily.

i will say it again, i loved the faeriewalker series by jenna black, loved it.. but this...kinda confused me. you see in the series Dana the main character is the same age as Kimber and on this short story it says Dana is 18 while kimber is 16.... they are both 16 on the series and kimber older by a few months since she invites Dana to her 17th birthday party on the first book, and it kinda messes with how the events go on the series since Dana sees Kimber's brother first. But other than that it was a cute story
about how Dana tries to show Kimber to use her fey magic.

Founding her place

We get a glimpse into a girl desperate for the love and attention of her father, to get out of her brother's shadow and to have a real friend. Unfortunately this little episode only allows a glimpse into this desire and whets our appetites. Definitely worth the read.

Pretty much pointless. If this had been my introduction to the series, I would not be compelled to read any further so I'm glad I didn't start with this one.

This book isn't your typical wore-lock story, but it wasn't my cup of tea either.

DISCLAIMER I read this without knowing it was a series.

I immediately took a liking to this short story. It's told from the POV of a fifteen-year-old girl named Kimber, who is a wise-cracking genius college student (already). She is a faerie, but is sorely lacking in the magical abilities department, so this is a source of pain and embarrassment for her. To make matters worse, her older brother of two years, named Ethan, is a phenomenally gifted faerie and attracts plenty of female admires, much to Kimber's chagrin. Well, he steals all her friends away because they are female.

So, Kimber gets this idea to have a faerie tutor come to the house while she thinks no one is home to help her develop her abilities. The tutor is a college freshmen, like herself, but she's eighteen, as most college freshman are. Somehow things go horribly wrong and Ethan shows up only to steal yet another potential friend from Kimber.

The YA voice in this story was spot-on and refreshingly hilarious. I could easily hear Kimber's voice in my head. The drawback is that it is far too short to really convey a complete story. It's more like the beginning of a good story, and maybe some of the middle, but none of the end. So, I can't give it as many stars as I'd like for that. Mostly, the preview to the first Faeriewalker book is there, right afterward, demanding to be read.

I had already purchased Glimmerglass (book 1 of Faeriewalker), before I obtained this title, but I now believe I'll enjoy it, although the protagonist is not the same person. Still, I believe in the author's writing and voice, which are both superb. Recommended for those who simply want a taste of the Faeriewalker series before committing to it.

This is a short story that Ms. Black wrote as a sort of prequel to the first book in the Faeriewalker series. It is about Kimber and her longing to be as magically capable as her older brother Ethan. The story is roughly twenty to thirty pages long and we get to see one of the many reasons she is so cold to Dana when they first meet.

Kimber is used to being the odd one out. She never really has any friends because all the girls she knows have at some point dated her brother and he uses them and moves on and the girls blame Kimber for some odd reason. She is also the less favored child in her family. Her father favors Ethan and doesn't even pretend that that isn't the case. To top it all of her mother left them when she was young so really she has grown up pretty much fending for herself.

In this story Kimber is attempting to learn to use magic more efficiently. She has girl from school that agrees to teach her to do this. Their plans go horribly awry when, instead of bringing the teddy bear on the shelf to her, she brings all of her teddy bears to life and the bears go completely homicidal. Ethan comes in at the last second and saves the two girls by basically blowing all of the bears to pieces. As per the usual the girl that was helping Kimber out immediately fell in lust with Ethan and left Kimber on her own to clean up.

I hope that in the future with this series that Kimber learns to use magic on a proficient level. Maybe her and Dana can learn together. I love this series and am really looking forward to getting my hands on everything else Jenna Black has written.

Remedial Magic was the shortest and the most explanatory book about two of the characters i've ever read in my entire life. it talks about how Kimber and Ethan are really about as brother and sister, but also as two different individuals with different political and moral views of their world and how they interpret it as well. Kimber is being compared to her brother just for being the magic prodigy. In Avalon, where the Faeriewalker series and this book takes place, we see Kimber being "magically handicapped" and seen as a freak by people and her own father as well. She tries to livfe up to her father's expectation of also being magical as well by hiring a tutor, but things go haywire and we see a glimpse of jealosy and imminent anger and frustration on her older brother Ethan who is the odds on favorite with her father. the only thing that she's ever wanted was to be accepted for who she really is and to also have a friend that understands what she's going through and to also not hate her by association. it was an amazing way to start the story or at least know two of the characters before the stories actually begin. i recommend that you read this book before reading the Faeriewalker series. have fun!!!
