Excellent text I would highly recommend for a modern Irish history survey course. AJ’s narrative is comprehensive and thoughtful about those moments where the scholarship is still in debate.

A detailed history that covers the rebellious march to the Republic. It focuses almost exclusively on the political maneuverings of the various parties between themselves and with England. It does not get into the personalities and personal rivalries, and thus manages to make Irish history pretty boring , which is hard to do.
