Between Plautus, Drzhich and Moliere, which described the same plot in their comedies, our version seems to me the most inferior, giving the fact that it lacks innovations to distinguish itself. Moliere had his work expanded significantly, adding the tragic, historical background to the family which was separated in the midst of danger, while the comic confrontations were fresh and distinguishable from one another. With ''Skup'', the tracking of conversation stretches for far too long, with the lack of liveliness and smaller cast of characters (if my memory serves me well). The famous misunderstanding between the lover and the father of beloved (in which he confesses love to his daughter, which the father misinterprets as the confession of robbing him earlier) seems watered down, in comparison to the original work. I have the notion that the author tried to simplify the comedy to be accessible and understandable to everyone, while, parallel, not trying to take a risk and make this work distinguishable. Last (2021) year I wrote reviews for the three versions of ''Electra'' and each had enough of it's own characteristics so it doesn't feel like a light copy of the other two. I'm sorry this isn't the case with this comedy as well, because the story itself is great and I was laughing on my ass while reading it. Of course, the best are inventive people from the lower parts of society who use their cunning to outsmart their sickly stingy masters, while between them are loving pair. If someone hasn't read any of the three versions, then I strongly recommend them (Plautus or Moliere would be a good choice).

I like the way that Držić shows people, their naivety and vanity, especially when he describes the male characters. Unlike women, which he gave charm and wisdom. Thank you, Mr. Držić!

Predgovor Ivan Slamnig

Even though the novel is very old and there are a lot of old words that are not in use in Croatian language anymore, I found it very funny.

Klasična priča o škrcu i njegovom blagu. Držić je solidan kao i uvijek.
