The Guardians #1

The Guardian

Rate this book
Seventeen-year-old Genesis Green is living anything but a charmed life. As far back as she can remember, she and her mother have been bouncing from town to town, struggling to survive on Ramen noodles and minimum wage.

Late one evening, Genesis and her boyfriend are in a car accident. Carter’s SUV rolls, and Genesis finds herself injured, lying on the pavement. Just before she slips into the darkness an unfamiliar voice calls out to her, promising everything will be fine.

His name is Seth, and he’s the Guardian assigned to protect her.

When Genesis begins having bizarre visions, the Guardians believe she could be useful to them. To Seth, this means stepping into the middle of an epic battle between angels and demons. Even with supernatural protection, there’s no guarantee he can keep Genesis safe, something that's becoming more important to him by the day.

The line between reality and the celestial becomes so blurred that Genesis can't decide who’s real and who’s otherworldly, and who's good and who's evil.

Okay... I went into this book with high hopes for some reason. I was disappointed. The characters are just okay... nothing special. The author uses the ex when she needs him, but then says he's not good enough for Genesis... (don't even get me started on the name Genesis... really?) And then her Guardian comes in and he's all perfect but he can't take care of Genesis like the ex coulda... But he's perfect... psh.

There was one scene where Genesis was riding her bike to school... and Sahara or Savanna or whatever her name is called out to her... and jogs to catch up with her... in the next friggin sentence, Genesis is holding onto the bar in this girls car talking about how she now drives with more caution... WAIT, did I miss a paragraph where they both get into this girls car??? Nope... it's just magic.

There were so many missing words out of this book... and obviously missing passages. It was annoying. I won't be reading the second book. I'm upset I paid 3 bucks for it.

Hovering at 2.5 stars.

Good idea...poor execution.

I love the idea of everybody having guardian angels. Having one fall in love with his charge is different and makes for an interesting plot. But this book just falls short.

Genesis not only bounces back from being in a car accident rather quickly but she also makes some big changes in her life over night. She dumps her boyfriend, cuts her hair, magically lets a piercing grow in and quits smoking. I can sort of buy the first two but the last two left me rolling my eyes.

You can't just quit smoking like that. Or at least most people can't. And you are coughing for days and having nicotine withdrawals and she gets none of that.

There's also no building up of romance between Genesis and Seth. None. At All. He is just there and in love with her and she just accepts it.

Usually, I write more than this for a review but I honestly have nothing more to say. This could have been good but it wasn't.

Plain and simple: THE IDEA WAS GOOD. THE EXECUTION BAD.

**Some Spoilers**

Let's cut to the chase, shall we? I can't believe I paid for this book.
It needs editing SO bad. The flow is off, there are missing words, things really should be re-worded, and the structure is pretty wrecked. Not to mention punctuation, grammar, etc.

It was pretty juvenile. Girl has boyfriend (a nice one at that), breaks up with boyfriend because SHE thinks SHE is not good enough. Suddenly she meets her guardian (he saves her from an accident), and talks to her guardian about twice. Suddenly, she is in love and obsessed. I didn't even get to see a relationship develop at all! There was no developing. I do not even understand their relationship. Hell, I liked Carter more because he was more 3-D than the 2-D relationship with Seth...

The only reason It got a 2 from me is because there were some parts I liked and I liked Gen for most of the time. She seemed real - except for the whole 'insta'-love thing with Seth.

Don't get me wrong, I'm usually pretty generous with book reviews. I don't actually like giving bad reviews.

Let's be real here: girl is really into boyfriend, then breaks up with boyfriend impulsivly, then is instantaneously over boyfriend, then meets guardian and has two conversations with guardian, then falls in love with guardian, then dates surfer, then ignores surfer to have more inane conversation with guardian. To put it lightly, I find the emotional progression of this story hard to believe. So I'm done with this series.

I didn’t expect to like this book so much but I was interested in it after reading the summary. It held my interest all the way through. There was the same old high school girls hating girls type of thing over a guy but it wasn’t all that bad. The guy is actually very nice and I did not like the heroine, Genesis (at first) but I did enjoy the story and recommended it. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I can’t wait to book 2. 🙂

This one is maybe closer to 2.5 stars than 3, but I'd rather give it a 3 than a 2.

Basic Premise: Girl (Genesis) who is down on her luck nearly dies. Her Guardian (Seth) shows up (pretty much an angel but with no wings). She's dating another guy (Carter) and some teen boyfriend angst ensues. Later, for some reason, Genesis begins seeing visions of the future, which turns out to be a pretty big deal / desirable trait to both the Guardians and their arch enemies (Diabols, aka demons). Conflict ensues.

What I liked:
- Genesis is a decently strong female protag, at least by typical YA standards. She has some attitude to her, and you can see she has a sense of morality, nobility, and the desire to "mean something" in her life. I'm good with that in a female lead. She also has some backbone. When Seth tried to dictate to her, she pretty much told him off. In a world of weak, "whatever you say, hot Mr. MarySue" female leads, she gets an A for that
- Seth isn't bad. He's kind and sweet, and thank goodness the book isn't filled with 8000 lines extolling his physical perfection. He's hot, but it's not gaga over Seth all the time.
- I do like a few of the secondaries, namely Joshua and Stu. Genesis's mom, who isn't likable at all, isn't bad as an explanation / reasons for why Genesis is the way she is - independent and fairly self sufficient.
- Overall story / plot is decent. I'm rather curious about how/why Genesis sees these glimpses of the future and I'm definitely curious about this war of good and evil going on.

What needed some work / what I didn't like:
- I'm not sure I buy the chemistry between Seth and Genesis.
- I hated the way Genesis treated Carter. He's actually a good guy, and it's clear that he loves Genesis. I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but the whole Seth / Genesis / Carter thing has a distinct Twilight Edward / Bella / Jacob feel, except that I actually like Carter where I didn't like Jacob. While I'd like to see Genesis wind up with Seth, I'll be sad if Carter winds up alone.
- Some additional background is needed, i.e. where do these Guardians come from? The world felt a little flat and one dimensional. I didn't quite have enough to "believe" in it as I'd have liked to.
- Additionally, the plot is a little simplistic once you get into the story. Maybe with more background (see above) I wouldn't feel this way.
- Seth leaving was predictable and unnecessary.
- Maybe petty, but I really did not like Genesis's name. I dislike it enough that it's distracting.

All in all, not bad. Very fast read. I knocked most of it back during my lunch hour. I'll probably read the second book tonight.

I think Alanis Morissette latest song, Guardian, perfect as soundtrack to this book

You, you who smiled when you’re in pain
You who soldiered through the profane
They were distracted and shut down

So why, why would you talk to me at all
Such words were dishonorable and in vain
Their promise as solid as a fog

And where was your watchman then

I’ll be your keeper for life as your guardian
I’ll be your warrior of care, your first warden
I’ll be your angel on call, I’ll be on demand
The greatest honor of all as your guardian

You, you in the chaos feigning sane
You who has pushed beyond what’s humane
Them as the ghostly tumbleweed

And where was your watchman then

I’ll be your keeper for life as your guardian
I’ll be your warrior of care, your first warden
I’ll be your angel on call, I’ll be on demand
The greatest honor of all as your guardian

Now no more smiling mid crest fall
No more managing unmanageables
No more holding still in the hailstorm

Now enter your watch woman

I’ll be your keeper for life as your guardian
I’ll be your warrior of care, your first warden
I’ll be your angel on call, I’ll be on demand
The greatest honor of all as your guardian

Just plain old bad. The characters were not really given any depth. The story line was that pathetic type to where girl see her guardian angle, girl falls in love, within a day, no relationship building it just is. It was just... don't read it.

Bit fast paced for me, its a YA so very easy quick read , I need more detail so will be reading the next book . I love the concept, detest the lovey dovey ness who falls in love in such a short time? I did enjoy it though and am glad i read it.

So I'm going to start off with the fact that I only read this book about a week ago and I've already forgotten a lot of the details.
It was an alright book, but nothing really stuck with me.

I found the relationship between Genesis and Seth somewhat lacking. I just didn't really feel that connection we're supposed to get, and it doesn't really go anywhere.
I was interested in Genesis's developing powers, but they really play a very small roll in the book.
Over all I found myself not interested in continuing this series (even directly after finishing it) and certainly not a week later as I write this review.

The characters are interested, the concept of guardians and demons is intriguing, but it just wasn't for me.

I got this book cheap when I first got my kindle and thought it sounded like a cool story. Unfortunately this book really fell flat for me.

It is short and very YA. The idea of the story is such a great idea with everyone having a guardian looking out for them but this book needed a lot more fleshing out. The pacing is terrible and jumps from one day in one place to a completely different day in another place that left me wondering if I had somehow skipped a page or chapter or something.

I didn't like the main character and none of the other characters were developed enough for me to get behind any of the love interests or friendships.

Will not be continuing this series as nearly DNF this one.

This was sooooo not for me.

The so called romance was something that might have been taken from Twilight, where Genesis can't make up her mind who she wants to be with. Or discards the good guy in favor to the thrilling one.

There was not much chemistry between the characters and I didn't really understand the place of the guardians in the world building.

How ever it was a really quick read and that is positive in this case..

It was one of those - meh books

it wasn't he beat book I have ever read but it also wasn't horrendous. I felt the plot seemed quite rushed and that Seth and Genesis's relationship was forced.
But I did love the plot and the idea that their not really there but they are? - if that makes any sense.

Overall this was probably just under 4 stars. it did have nice ideas but there were definitely some flaws but not enough for me to dislike the read.

The way the main character reacted to some things was very underwhelming and should have been more exaggerated.
The love story also didn’t build, one moment they were strangers, the next they were in love?

Book Review- The Guardian by Katie Klein

Genesis Green and her mother struggle to make ends meet. She is considered poor and feels that more and more when she goes out with boyfriend Carter. One night after an uncomfortable dinner with Carter’s parents, Genesis and Carter are in a car accident. Genesis is seriously hurt but hears a comforting voice telling her that help is on the way. That voice belongs to Seth. He is a guardian and he watches over her.
Seth is shocked that she can see and hear him when she isn’t supposed to. He is also drawn to her. He shouldn’t stay visible as long as he does but there is something about her.
When Genesis starts having these weird dreams and visions, it freaks her out. When they actually start coming true, it sends her into a panic. Seth is afraid it will draw her into the war the guardians are fighting against evil. The guardians are thinking her visions may be useful in the battle. Seth is against it and Genesis needs to feel useful.
Things start getting weird when Arsen shows up one day. He starts working at the diner with her. His interest in her is more than she wants. Plus her mom is behaving like a child. Genesis is done with the way life has been going. She is ready to take control, that is, until evil comes knocking.
I liked how this story was set up. The family dynamic between Genesis and her mother is dysfunctional. Genesis also has a huge chip on her shoulder when it comes to Carter. Genesis’ reactions and behaviors are real and understandable. You feel for her instantly because you can see her life is not easy.
I liked how she now has visions after her accident. She gains a purpose that keeps her going. I also like how Seth treats her. He is annoying at first but always takes care of her. He seems to be the only character besides Stu who does.
There is a lot of darkness and loss. The author makes Genesis a target. Persuasion is used first, then threats. I wasn’t sure if her mom was that selfish or if she was a part of things. I have a feeling more secrets will be revealed in the next book.
I was also sad to see what happened in the end. Genesis has basically lost everything. The author really tore what life she had apart to give her a new one. It will be interesting to see how tough her character remains. I give it a 4 out of 5.

A Bodyguard And Maybe Something More? . . .

The cover is what lured me into reading the novel, however the story ended up being an okay young adult read. The main characters never really had depth and lacked a connection to me as the reader. However I will give the author huge points for the use allusion throughout the story.

Life for 17 year old Genesis Green has never been easy. When Genesis isn't at school she is working to help her mom pay the bills. So dating a rich boyfriend like Carter should be a wish come true but all it does is cause tension. A fight between them leads to a car accident that has Genesis waking up in the hospital. Genesis begins to see clearly and makes changes in her life. Especially when she meets a few new men in her life. One in particular named Seth, who only she can see and only seems to appear when he wants to. Seth saves Genesis again and reluctantly begins to reveal a whole new reality to her about the Guardians. Genesis now finds herself in a war between good and evil, all while trying to be a normal teen.

Overall, okay read, started off slow but got more interesting by the end. Genesis appears to be complex but her life is just a mess. The extra guy drama added insult to her character that was growing in independence. The greatest moment was when she tells her mom to stick it. Now Seth as the male lead is subpar, he's meant to be her guardian and immediately falls for her. All I could think was little creepy, since he's something and unknown age. Seth even throws a fit when Genesis agrees to help, because he'd have to really watch her back now since evil would be after her. Like duh dude still your job! If I was Genesis I'd have made Seth beg to get back in my good graces after ditching me. Anyways, the biggest fact about the book is the allusions of each name (ex. Genesis means origin) hinting at things to come or were all to culminate in the epic good vs. evil finale. So if you're looking for a new paranormal young adult book about a teen girl with a gift ready to take on evil because she had good and a guardian on her side, hen his book might lead you into a new series.

Different. Good.

Genesis can see the future, when she's in a car accident she remembers arms holding her telling her it's ok. it wasn't her boyfriend Carter. Then her guardian Seth appears to her. saves her life a few times, they spend a lot of time together. he's been in love with her, she now is falling for him. She is ask by he guardians to help since she sees things happen in time to stop them. they only have seconds before alerted. Seth is against this and tells her choose him or helping them. she decides to help thinking he won't leave. but he does. she's in great danger of the evil side finding out about her and he doesn't want to see her died because of them. she thinks all is ok until she hears sounds in her house, she goes to her ex work place to get her mom. everyone's gone but Stu. he's hurt. when she goes to call for help the evil ones are waiting for her. they want her. Seth appears theirs a huge fight. she lives but she's still in danger.
it ends there. basically I told you part of the story. not half of it.

it's a good book. kind of the same lines repeated that got on my nerves, I think a lot more of Genesis visions should have been talked about. what happened to her mom. you never do find out. why if Carter us so in love with he he never tries to.get her back. theirs just a lot missing but the book has a decent story line. maybe took.#2 is better.
I would've gave it a 3star but I liked the good verses evil and the guardian falling in love with the human plus a lot more of Genesis life. it's a really good account of a mother who makes her daughter grow up too fast, taking on too much responsibility at a young age. never thinking theirs anything wrong with it and always with the wrong kind of men. her daughter knows it but she meant get it.
it's just pretty true to life and then, dangerous, sweet and thrilling .
I'd say read it. it's a fast read but the end disappointed me. I hate cliffhanger s to that extent and not knowing what really happened to other people in the story. but it's a 4star.

Stars 3.5/5

This is my second Katie Klein book and am I disappointed? Nope Sir thank you very much 
I have to admit that I didn’t like the Guardian as much as I liked Cross My Heart (I gave it 5 stars so if you haven’t read it yet….what are you waiting for?) but I think that it can’t really compare as one was a stand alone book and The Guardian is the start of a series which makes it all more difficult.
The Guardian is a strong start of the series, laying down the genesis (pun TOTALLY intended) surrounding the guardians role.
I really like Genesis (get the pun now?) the main character. She is strong and brave and she knows what she wants even if things are complicated (borderline chaotic) she seems to make sense of it all. I also like Seth who is somehow ‘conflicted’….I’m not sure about the secondary character just yet and I think I will have to wait to read book two to form a more definite opinion which I think is what ot be expected from a series. I especially question Carter who, if really crazy about Genesis, let her go a bit too easily….Should we expect a love triangle in the next book?
This book didn’t have that many twist and turns in the plot lines and once you discovered the Guardians and what Genesis can do well….it seems pretty straight forward, I even figured pretty rapidly who the ‘bad guy’ was. I expected a lot more surprises but again I’m not being fair as I’m comparing to Cross my Heart. However the story is very well written, the pace is very steady and the story flows nicely.
I really can’t wait to read book 2.
In conclusions: The Guardian is a strong start of a series, setting grounds and creating enough ‘questions’ to make book 2 very interesting. I really advise this book for the paranormal romance fans.

I really loved this book. It reminded me a little of "Inescapable" (by A.Bartol). I actually decided to read it after having read a short story from the writer which is included in an anthology called "In His Eyes". Basically, the story is about a Guardian and the girl he guards. In the anthology short story we see things through the guardian's eyes and it overlaps with the beggining of the book, in which we see things through the heroine's eyes. So I recommend reading the short story first, it will make it so much more interesting and whole!:)

In general I liked the book; I liked that it had short chapters, the writing was okay, even if I would have liked a little more description, the storyline flowed nicely and quickly and pleasantly, the plot made sense and there were surprises and suspense. It was a bit predictable concerning one character of the book, but perhaps it was just to me...

The plot is about the girl and her life and how (unexpectedely) things turn out for her and what role her Guardian plays in it. You could call it a love story, but not quite, this is not the main issue of the book. I really can't say more without giving any spoilers..... But I will say it's interesting and worth reading! I totally recommend it if you're looking for action, love and fiction! Besides, as I said, you can read the short story first and if you like it as I did, you can read the book!:)

ps. Also, I think the writer is self-published... Strangly, the best books I've read the last year are self-published!

The full effect of this review can be found here with its snapshots.
This is my first time reading Katie Klein’s books. And it was a Kindle freebie!! You ought to feel this book to be nice, right? Let me outright tell you that if you expect a great premise, mark the check box; if you expect a great development in the story, hold your seats. If you are a goner for love triangles, this might actually fulfill your needs. The only downside of this book was its execution. It could’ve been a great story if the main character wasn’t a main insecure little girl. Obviously, some people might go for it. But before continuing, here's something less personal, as in facts:

A car accident will change Genesis life forever, maybe to better or maybe just complicating her already complicated life. Prior to the accident Genesis had a boyfriend, a job, smoker, responsibilities. After the accident: weird futuristic visions, aversion to cigarets, to complicated relationship to none, and from none to guarding angel status. She still holds responsibilities, but maybe a bit higher than before. Her predicting the future might put her in danger… But honestly, expect the Angel falling in love, the abrupt childish behavior, and a couple of deaths. Other than that, you will expect answers on the second book, because this one gave me nothing but forbidden love, deaths, and whatever.

I liked this book and it did get me interested in continuing the series but some parts of the book were slow. I didn't like how Gee always thought people thought less of her because she was poor. It felt like we went through her life day to day, same thing, school, home, work. I loved when Seth became part of the story, I found the idea of Guardians to be unique and I loved how deeply he cared for her. I did not understand what power Gee had and what good it did, this was a learning process but then when she took care of the little boy it hit me, okay this will be neat to see what happens next. I liked her relationship with Stu and wished they could have had a restaurant together. The simple gesture of giving Gee the white Rose and that Rose staying beautiful the whole time even into the next book is a great symbol of Seth's love for her. When Gee finally tells her mother what she thinks and how her life has been affected because of the choices her mother makes was great, good for her, it was ridiculous how Gee always had to be the adult. Then Arsen comes into the picture, I knew something was up with him right from the start and what he ends up doing, oh my gosh it was so sad. By the end of this book I was hooked and ready to move on to the next book, anxious to see what happens with Gee and Seth especially.

Well this one was not as good as Cross My Heart by Katie Klein. But for an Indie author, I think she has a lot of talent.

At the beginning of the book, I was annoyed with Genesis. She seemed like such an insecure brat. And because of her little blow up, I felt really bad for Carter. He was so sweet, I really liked him. Seth, was the one she fell in love with, but I didn't really feel it. There wasn't enough relationship building or something. I don't know, SOMETHING was missing. I did enjoy Seth's infatuation with Genesis, I sort of wish he would have elaborated on how his feelings developed for her. I thought he was cute. But still, I am holding out hope for Carter. :( I just don't see how a relationship would work out between the two of them, since they live in 2 different dimensions. Carter is better for her, he loves her, and he's human. Well the story has me intrigued enough that I have already bought the second book in this series, to see where this goes.

I loved this book! Although I typically stay away from 1st person present tense narrators, I LOVED this book. I have no idea how to do the spoiler thing on goodreads where it blanks out spoilers so please don't read this part!!

**SPOILER**
I have always hated the whiny, wishy washy character whose parents treat them like well...you know crap. I always want them to stand up and say something to the parent, to stop taking the abuse to move out or protest, report their parents to social services...something! One of the things I love about the main character is her feistyness. She has a pretty crappy home life. She has worked since she was 12 and given the money to her mother so their bills could be paid (sometimes). Her mother is irresponsible, moves constantly to avoid paying bills and to avoid the repercussions of her actions (poor relationship choices) making it very hard for their to be any stability for her child. The MC finally takes a stand and I love her for it! I really enjoyed the paranormal aspects of the book as well and would like to know more about the world of the guardians.
End Spoiler***

I hope the author has another book for this MC planned. I'll snatch it up!

I enjoyed reading The Guardian and I want to read the next book. This book has its Twilight moments and it's predictable but enjoyable.

I lbought this book a year ago by accident. I had no idea what it was about but I'm glad I got it. I read Cross My Heart by Katie Klein and really liked it. This wasn't a bad purchase.

I like Genesis, unlike Bella in Twilight I don't find Genesis annoying. I liked she exercise her free will and she stood by her decisions. Seth is her guardian, he looks out for her. He protects her and falls in love with him. He's a likable character. There's no surprise in who Arsen really is. He's a likable character but you know he's too good to be true.

I did find Carter to be a bit annoying. He needs to learn to be stronger. Selena is annoying but she changes a bit towards the end. I did like that even though Carter is in love with Genesis he remains her friend and believes her no matter what.

I would recommend this book. It's an easy read and easy to get into.
