This is a history of Ulster, ranging from prehistoric times to the present day, spanning 9000 years of social, political and economic life. It takes readers through the earliest settlements and plantations to the turmoil of the Troubles.
This is a highly readable, professionally produced book into which I dip regularly in carrying out historical research. Beautifully written and illustrated, as are all of Bardon's books, the latest edition has a splendid dust cover incorporating Joseph McWilliam's painting 'Long Parade'. I received this as a Christmas gift from my daughter and am eternally grateful for it and delighted with it.
Very good mostly non-biased history of northern Ireland from the point of someone that seemed from the loyalist side. It was good to read it from the other point of view than the typical histories from the republican view point.
A well written, engaging and comprehensive history of the region up to the Good Friday Agreement. Jonathan was a great orator and story teller, you really get to feel that through the text, especially when it gets to the sections on war and politics.
While I enjoyed reading the History of Ulster I did have some issues with the book. One he spent more time writing about the time after the nineteenth century. Made out that William of Orange was in Ireland when he was not and did not give the proper details of the starving of the Irish in the eighteen forties.
