I can't rate because I didn't read the text. But the pictures are glorious. And there's a map, and an excellent organizational design. For all ages, even toddlers, who can learn a few different leaf or needle shapes. Do note that it is very oversize.

Ik las de Nederlandse vertaling "Bomen" en genoot van de prachtige tekeningen die deden denken aan oude academische prentenboeken, maar dan nu met heel veel kleur.
Het is eerder een naslagwerk, dus wel benieuwd wat kinderen er zelf van vinden. De teksten zijn heel informatief, maar minder "vlot lezend" of aantrekkelijk. Dat hoeft misschien niet, wel benieuwd wat kinderen hier nu echt van vinden en of het spontaan door hen ook wordt gekozen in de bib.
Voor mij een mooie aanvulling op het boek van Peter Wohlleben dat ik ook las in oktober en waar ik dan weer de foto's/tekeningen miste...

Joskus koko ratkaisee ja suuri on kaunista. Puut herätti huomioni Lastenkirjainstituutin Kirjakori-näyttelyssä mitoillaan: kirja on 38 cm korkea. Samassa Welcome to the Museum -sarjassa on ilmestynyt muitakin kirjoja, joita on myös suomennettu: Eläinkunta (1. painos Eläinten sukupuu), Kasvikunta ja Sienikunta. Kaikkia näitä yhdistää iso koko ja Katie Scottin piirroskuvitus, joka tuo mieleen vanhan ajan opetustaulut. Kirjoittajat vaihtelevat: Puut-kirjan on kirjoittanut Tony Kirkham, joka oli Kew Gardensin arboretumin pitkäaikainen johtaja. Suomentajaksikin on löydetty asiantuntija, Luonnonvarakeskuksen tutkija Anneli Viherä-Aarnio, joka tunteet puut epäilemättä todella hyvin. Puiden suomenkielinen nimistö on sekin asiantuntijatyötä.

Luvassa on vankka paketti asiaa. Teos on jaoteltu kuuteen osioon ilmastovyöhykkeittäin: lauhkean vyöhykkeen havumetsät, lauhkean vyöhykkeen lehtimetsät, Välimeren ilamston metsät, kostean tropiikin metsät, kuivan tropiikin metsät ja puutarhat. Näiden sisällä esitellään sitten monenlaisia puita elinympäristöineen. Aukeamasta tavallisesti toinen sivu on omistettu tekstille ja toinen kuville. Teksti on sen verran isokokoista, ettei sitä ole valtavia määriä, mutta toisaalta kirjan vaativuutta lisää se, ettei tekstissä vältellä puiden tieteellisiä nimiä. Alkuteoksen ikäsuositus on 8–12-vuotiaille, eikä tämä tekstinsä puolesta ihan pienimpien lasten tietokirja olekaan.

Kuten lasten tietokirjoissa toisinaan käy, välillä kiinnostavat faktat jäävät vähän ohimeneviksi maininnoiksi – mutta sitä varten on internet, josta voi sitten penkoa lisätietoa ja vaikka niitä puiden kuvia. Puut on parhaimmillaan antamassa kokonaiskuvan puiden maailmasta ja siitä, millaisia puita eri puolilla maailmaa eri ilmastovyöhykkeillä kasvaa.

Jos teksti suosii yleiskäsitystä, kuvitus sen sijaan keskittyy paljolti puiden erilaisiin yksityiskohtiin: lehtiin, kukkiin, käpyihin ja hedelmiin. Olisin kaivannut enemmän kuvia kokonaisista puista. Opetustaulumainen tyyli on kuitenkin läpi kirjan johdonmukainen, eikä mukaan ole sotkettu valokuvia. Siitä pisteet. Taittokin toimii ja tekee kirjasta oikein tyylikkään ja mukavasti vanhanaikaisen ja arvokkaan näköisen kokonaisuuden.

The "Welcome to the Museum" series of books is strikingly impressive. The art work is classic style and sometimes a bit of whimsy thrown in. But whenever real items are depicted, the accuracy of image and information stand up to scrutiny and are dependably trustworthy.

Gathering information about trees across the globe we call Earth and presenting the uniqueness of tree types in various "forest" on our planet, the book Arboretum is a book to depend upon and treasure.

I have discovered in recent years that scientists have presented information that substantiates the theory that trees communicate in the forests. The root systems are "hard wired" (my term) and allow communicate that alerts to tree distress, releases substances that aid in "healing" or strengthening the tree/s. Information along this line is provided in Arboretum.

Further information about the unique and yet similar trees in each of the forests on Earth is so interesting. Also, impartation of tree structure from the top to the farthest away roots is so interesting as is design of leaves and seeds.

The types of forest in each location on Earth is interesting (there is a two-page map showing these). I live in North Carolina and it is a delight to know (or discover) that in my state we have Temperate Conifer and Temperate Broadleaf forests. Within these types of forests, and many, many different types of trees. I always have loved how my state has such a wealth of green and then during the Fall such a bounty of colorful foliage.

Again, a hit for the "Welcome to the Museum" series.

From the Welcome to the Museum series, this gorgeously illustrated volume features trees from the the world’s largest collection of growing plants, found in the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, in London. The book’s text is described not as written, but as curated by Tony Kirkham, who served as the director of the Arboretum at Kew for over 40 years. Lush endpapers displaying leaves, blossoms, fruits and seeds introduce us to illustrations inspired by classic botanical style that is featured throughout the book. A two-page spread with a full-color map displays Biomes of the world, each of which is detailed in the pages that follow. Arboreal enthusiasts will enjoy reading about the evolution of trees, how they communicate, and the crucial part they play in maintaining a healthy ecosystem, in addition to extensive information about specific species. A detailed index, notes about the book’s curators (author and illustrator), and a section titled, To Learn More, are included in the Back Matter. This oversized volume will be pored over and cherished by arboreal enthusiasts who are fortunate enough to encounter it. Recommended, for ages 10 & up, by SEPA Book Reviewers.

Woehoe, mijn tweede boek in deze reeks (van 4)! Na het indrukwekkende Het plantenboek heb ik nu ook het prachtige Bomen.

Deze boeken zijn niet enkel imposant door hun omvang (groot en zwaar) maar ook en vooral door de geweldige botanische tekeningen van Katie Scott. Zij combineert een ouderwets oog voor detail met een moderne frisheid én de nieuwste kennis en wetenschap. Dat maakt haar werk zo mooi, boeiend en leerrijk.

In dit boek werkt ze samen met Tony Kirkham, hij verzorgde meer dan 40 jaar lang de 14.000 bomen in de Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Dit boek is dus niet enkel een streling voor het oog maar ook een fontein van kennis voor je hoofd.

Je leert bij over wat bomen eigenlijk zijn, hoe ze communiceren, waar ze groeien, welke soorten er zijn. We bekijken in detail hun vruchten, zaden, schors, bladeren,… Kortom: een boek dat in geen enkele bomenliefhebber-kast mag ontbreken. En eentje dat in elk klaslokaal te vinden moet zijn! Ik hou van bomen én van Bomen!

The Welcome to the Museum series continues to mesmerize me with the information and the visual nature of the oversized books.

This one about trees from the zones across the planet from fruit trees to sequoias, the web of information passed along the root systems, and how they protect themselves and their seeds to name a few approaches.
