This is a story about chinese muslim family in 3 generations. the tragic was casued by the war.Sometimes i was really wondering chair Mao's politics. He saved the country but he destroyed the humanity. I don't think the name of this book is appropriate.
Exciting and narrate in good manner, including on non-Muslim and Muslim Chinese communities. I hope readers will realize that among China`s 56 ethnic groups, ten are believers in Islam, and among the 1 over billion Chinese people there is a young Hui writer, who was written a book in Chinese about the life of the Hui people.
Synopsis
The Jade King is the story of three generations of a Chinese Muslim family, from the turbulent years of the Japanese invasion and Second World War to the present. Central to the theme of this tragic novel are the four harrowing love stories of father, son, aunt and daughter, each victim of prejudice and fate.
The novel is regarding a modern Chinese culture set in the Muslim community in Bejing. Fascinating, and full of reminders of the importance of the past. The author Huo Da, a Muslim herself, locates her narrative in the specific milieu of Beijing`s Muslim community with its jade artisans, astute merchants, hardworking housewives, and its young people struggling to assert their independence and individuality in the face of religious and social bigotry.
The Muslim community and family concern in this novel is centered at Hui clan of Chinese races. This community pays a great attention to cleanliness, abstinence from pork, as well as wears white caps the Muslim men wear. And the fact is that the existence of a Muslim district in Beijing and the Ox Street Mosque.
Old Master jade artisan Liang, a poor but talented jade craftsman, has one regret in life; he has no son and heir to carry on the family business and run the Rare Gem Studio. One day, a venerable old Muslim (Tuloyedin) on his way to Holy City of Mecca, Saudi Arabia and accompanied by his young disciple (Ibrahim or Han Ziqi) appears at Liang`s door to ask for sustenance. Entranced by Liang`s exquisite jade work and his two beautiful daughters, the disciple begs to be allowed to stay. The fate of the Liang family is changed forever.
Richly textured, moving, tremendously exciting, The Jade King is a veritable tour de force. It was accorded China`s top literary accolade, the Mao Dun Prize for Literature.
Two storylines took place in two different periods are connected seamlessly by the author. A very intriguing story that gives the readers a glimpse into ordinary people's life during the early days of Communist China. The Chinese version was better, but there are too many cultural references that are hard to translate. Despite the language barrier, The Jade King is still a really good book that is worth picking back up again in the future.
It's a pretty sad story. But it is an accurate picture of what was going on at that time. Since then, 30 some years have past, unfortunately I can still see traces of what's depicted in the book - the rigid way of looking at people through different lenses. The self-righteous type of religion practices. And the teaching that freedom can be attained through such man-made ways.
My all time favourite book. I cannot stress how amazing this book is. Through the story of a Muslim family in Beijing, the book explores cultural, social and religious conflict in the 20th century.
—— " Jade has a thousand years of life, how long is life? Panic buying at high prices, meticulous collection, but in the end I don't know who will fall into it. "
"Muslim's Funeral" was first published in China in 1987. It takes the ups and downs of the jade workshop Qizhenzhai of the Hui craftsman Liang Yiqing as the main line, and describes the different destinies of the three generations of the Liang family against the historical background.
Huo Da was born in Beijing in 1945. Studied at Beijing Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture (now Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture). His novel "Muslim's Funeral" won the Mao Dun Literature Award in 1991. Representative works: "Muslim's Funeral", "Unworn Red Wedding Dress", etc.

" Ah, Allah! Be free of all of us: the living and the dead, the present and the absent, the young and the adults, the men and the women. Ah, Allah! Let him whoever you let live among us? Live in Islam; whoever you let die, let him die in faith. Ah, Allah! Do not deprive us of his reward, and do not test us after him! "
"As far back as the 7th century AD, some Arab merchants with white cloths on their heads came to Dongtu Datang. They got used to the waters and soils of the Divine Land, married and had children here, and stayed there. In 1219, Genghis Khan led his army to the west. In 1258, Hulagu captured Baghdad. The land of various ethnic groups who believed in Islam was gradually occupied by Mongolian nobles to the west of Congling and east of the Black Sea. The conquerors forced the conquered to migrate to the east in large numbers. Among them were captured craftsmen. There are people who have been issued, and there are high-class Arab figures with their families and families. Of course, there are also merchants who spontaneously come by taking advantage of the traffic between the east and the west. Most of these "outsiders" are sergeants, farmers and craftsmen in China. A small number of people are engaged in business and missionary work, and there are also very few officials. The descendants of these people rarely return to their hometowns, but take root on this soil, multiply and thrive, and pass on from generation to generation. The official documents of the Yuan Dynasty call them "Huihui". Also known as "Huihui", a new nation was born in the East.
Because of the history of the inevitable convergence, among the Hui ethnic Han Chinese have melted into some of the ingredients Mongols, Uighurs and Jews, but Hui has always maintained its own independent existence in, rather than integrated into the Han Chinese or other ethnic groups. The vast China is a place where the Han people live and multiply for a long time. Huihui cannot own a large piece of land like a native people. They are constantly being dispatched to relocate, even being conquered and slaughtered. For their livelihood, they are exiled. Quartet...They are always a minority. These few people live hard, tenaciously, and carefully, believing in their Lord.
They believe that Allah is unique. He created the earth, the sky, the forces of nature, people, angels, and the "jinni" (elves). He rules everything; he has no image, but he is clever and omnipotent. He is always Everywhere, when there are three people talking in private, he is the fourth participant, and when there are four people talking in private, he is the fifth participant... The Lord is always with Muslims. Muslims submit to Allah, accept the revelation that Allah knows through Muhammad, pray sincerely, be honest, be kind, live simple, not arrogant, not slander others, defend their faith, follow the "sunna"-Sunna, Muhammad's road. They believe that there are "post generations" in life and "doomsday judgment". Everyone's soul is accepted into heaven or thrown into hell, everything will be determined by Allah; they believe that good deeds must be rewarded and evil must be punished... "
I once read of Islam Festival " Koran " . It records the revelation that Muhammad accepted the divine enlightenment to believers . It can be seen that Islam and Christianity have a great origin. On the other hand, Christianity shares a similar view of creation with Judaism . As an Oriental, if you want to understand the spiritual world of Westerners or Arabs , then understanding these religions is essential.
" This is a regular courtyard house. The gray brick walls facing each other with polished bricks are clustered with hanging mountain-style gate towers, and the two ends of the ridge are towering with simple-shaped kisses. Above the rafters, a row of triangles is neatly inlaid." drip. "eaves, the door is painted dark red. heavy door on the fan, trimmed with one pair of size sized brass cymbals door, hanging door knocker. the center of the leaf, is a double hook engraved gold Lacquer couplet: "With the pearl and the wall, the bright moon and the breeze." Two hexagonal door hairpins extend from the door lintel, each embedded with a word: "Bo" and "Ya". These words are similar to the common "long life". The difference between “rich and honorable” and “Xiangyang Gate is always in spring, and the good people celebrate more than one”, which can faintly show the aspirations of the owner of this courtyard. On both sides of the gate, there are a pair of stone drums, high thresholds, and five bluestone steps. "
Siheyuan is a residential form with a long history in old Beijing . With the gradual scarcity of land resources. The people who can live in the courtyard today are probably the rich or the noble. The market price is probably an astronomical figure that ordinary people cannot expect.
" It is said that before this house fell into his hands, a literati who was frustrated in the official court of the Qing Dynasty lived in this house. Because of the lack of access to the officialdom, he passed away passively. He concentrated on reading and painting, playing with Qin brick and Han tiles, antique cultural relics, especially I love jade from the past dynasties and masturbate with "a gentleman is better than jade." On weekdays, I am closed to thank guests. Only a few jade shops and workshops occasionally walk around and find treasures. You must buy them quickly, even if the price is too high. If you don’t have enough money, you have to watch it again and again, and you can just give it up. If you hear that someone has a beautiful jade, you are not ashamed to go to the door, but you can see it as soon as possible. He is so old and often so mad and ridiculed by people. "Jade Demon", the old man was not irritated when he heard it. Instead, he was proud of him. He passed the eighth rank and died of life, his children and grandchildren were ruined, and his family was bankrupt. The house was changed to the owner and returned to the detective captain. But the legacy of the old man still left shadow . "
Living life, if you can find something to make yourself crazy things , I think it is a blessing. As for this obsession in the eyes of others, I think it is irrelevant. In contrast , those who are not obsessed with things of life are unable to understand this spiritual bliss, called compassion.
" Mr. Han," the detective captain used a respectful name, but his wealthy and condescending attitude hasn't changed much, "you look at the room first, or listen to the price first? "You don't have to look," the guest said, "I have seen the house in the mansion long before you lived here." Now since you are going to move, I just want to buy it, just listen to you to say a number..." The detective captain couldn't help but was surprised secretly: This person has already fallen in love with this place, so he bought it without seeing it. ! This raises the status for both the buyer and the seller! The detective leader is happy, and it seems that this house is indeed good! If it weren’t for that "voice" to make a noise in his heart, maybe he wouldn’t be willing to sell it now. But, he has to sell, he has to avoid this ghost place anyway, and he can't let it go when he meets such a master who really wants to buy!
In his heart, he added another 20% to the price he had originally thought, and then said: "When dealing with happy people, we can't make a mistake, you can give 10,000 yuan a big head!" He observed whether the other party could accept this amount, and Be prepared to bargain. Unexpectedly, the other party didn’t say anything, and answered happily, with only one word: "Yes." The detective captain was taken aback again. It was impossible to raise the price again. With a thought, he added: "There is one, Han Sir! I only sell a house. The four boxwood shadow walls in the second door are not in it. I have to move!" "This...the shadow wall is also part of the house," the buyer groaned, "I Buy this house, and buy this shadow wall, the price can be negotiated." "Then you will pay another two thousand!" The detective captain understood the other party's psychology, and naturally he was not welcome. "Successful." The buyer said, "You are ready to move!"
The deal is done, the detective captain did not expect it to be so fast. "You have to wait for me to move in quickly," he worried that the buyer had discovered his secret halfway and changed his mind. "Don't you have to prepare the money?" "Wait for a few days, it won't matter, you can take it easy. "," said the buyer, "what about the money, you can send someone to the cabinet with me now to get ten thousand, which is considered to be an order . The remaining two thousand will be cleared after you have moved it. What do you think?" Captain Detective I was stunned, who has seen such a buyer? He offered a price, and if he didn't pay back one word, he would give 10,000 yuan on the same day. Is there any precedent in the trading industry? Prepay 30% of the booking money is justified! This person... how much does he have? who is he? "
Negotiations are not suitable for an open and honest approach. No matter how much you want to buy or sell , you must never act too refreshed. Even if the other party's offer, within their acceptable range , but also must show difficulty with color , bargain.
" These two daughters follow the appearance of the Bai family, one is more beautiful than the other, and the skin is whiter, as if they are carved from mutton fat jade. The eldest daughter is named Junbi, and the second daughter is named Bingyu. They are very appropriate. The good name was given by Liang Yiqing, an old gentleman who had learned a lot and loved antique jade and lived in the "Bo Ya" house. Liang Yiqing and Bai cried out for convenience, and they usually called "Bi'er" and "Yu'er" "They are regarded as two pearls in the palm. Bi'er and Yu'er are eight years old. The youngest is still a toddler, and the older is able to help Bai family housekeeping, sweeping the courtyard, making the bed and stacking quilts, sewing and repairing, and doing laundry They are all good at food. Bi'er is even better than his mother Bai's, talented, and scheming. His family's internal and external expenses are more than his mother's. Although he is illiterate, he relies solely on mental calculations and is well arranged. Just now At the age of twelve or thirteen, he replaced most of his mother, almost Liang Yiqing's little "account room."
Sometimes Liang Yiqing was too busy to do the work in front of him, so Bier lay hands on him, serving customers, collecting payments, delivering goods, and even helping his father with simple tasks such as shredding and measuring materials. Liang Yiqing never let her go to the "water stool", one is because the hard work of jade carving was not done by a girl, and the other is that the craftsman has always "passed on the children but not the girls", and the daughter has learned the craft. owned by root knot at the end is others. Seeing that Qizhenzhai has no one to succeed, Liang Yiqing often sighed against his wife in front of Bi'er: "Alas, it's a daughter, if it's a son... "
Most of the craftsmen in ancient China adhered to the principle of " passing from children to daughters, not from inside to outside " , and they were extremely strict with family skills. This is certainly out of the need for market competition. On the other hand, strict secrecy measures have also made a lot of folk wisdom lost. Later generations can only look at the history and sigh at the magical craftsmanship in history . If a science or technology is to be promoted. Then, we have to throw some selfishness and teach disciples. But the so-called " master of the church starved to death " , how many people can have such a mind?
" The hand grinder he used to do his work was called "Water Stool". It was extremely simple. It was just a "stool surface" supported by four legs, with a rotating shaft on one side, and a "tuozi" for grinding jade-a grinding wheel. The shape of the knife is digging a recess on one side, containing emery for grinding jade. A small mouth is opened on the head of the recess, and a water basin is held on the triangular support below. Liang Yiqing was sitting on a machine bench when he was working. Stepping on the pedals under the water stool with both feet, driving the horizontal axis on the surface of the stool, the tuft turned; holding the jade piece in his left hand, he pondered the sharp edge of the tuft, and his right hand kept dipping emery. In order to reduce the temperature of the friction between the tuozi and the jade piece, it is necessary to constantly add water, which is why the name "water stool" comes from.
Although the tools are simple, the craftsmanship is very complicated. There are five pieces of each, from rough grinding to fine grinding. It is necessary to constantly replace various models of Luzi, gradually increasing the degree of refinement. The "work" has different shapes and different areas. The convex and concave, all rely on the artist's handwork, the operation is in a hurry, but it must be fully focused and meticulous, two eyes are like being attracted by a magnet, and a heart is like being suspended by an invisible rope, so that even breathing is extremely light Slowly and evenly, and silently, the sound of "Shusha" covered everything and merged everything. When he started his work, he had forgotten everything and everything in the world. "
Many skills are honed in a lot of practice and cannot be mastered only through books. And even familiar with one kind of skill are able to work craftsman , it may not be able to be a good teacher , able to trick them, and said the key to clear. Those who own outstanding ability, but also good teachers who can be said to be rare up . Such a person can carry forward a craft or knowledge.
Oddly enough, it was a captivating story, considering the fact that I spent an entire afternoon reading it and couldn't put it down until I've finished it.
But, I didn't like it. And I can't really tell why.
The title of the book is obviously a good one. But the story itself, the plots, are too shallow. A young, innoncent, pretty college girl with heart disease? Okay. She was actually the daughter of her aunt and father? Okay. She fell in love with her teacher? Okay. She died? Okay. *Sad face*
Now to carry on. A controlling woman whose husband left her and her young son for England and remained abroad for ten years? Okay. A manipulative woman who personally sabotaged her son's affair with the girl he loved? Okay. A paranoid woman who fired her husband's loyal butler and claimed he was stealing? Okay. A pathetic woman whose husband screwed her own younger sister who she literally brought up? Wow.
I don't like any of the characters in this book. That, mind you, rarely happens. For some reason I always, always could find someone I like in a book. I don't know why, either. Guess I just have to like someone while reading. But this story was an utter disappointment.
I wasn't going to be this mean, I swear. I'd be happy to give it a 2-star rating at least, had it been a normal love story, or whatever you want to call it. Because, as I said earlier, it was captivating and that definitely says something.
Yet the title I liked screwed it. I mean, the title, plus the story, the religious knowledge hidden in this book, is hinting its readers that it doen't just want to be a normal sad love story. It's about Muslims. It's about their culture, their history, and their religion.
The author failed, disastrously. I learnt almost nothing at all by reading it. Whatever I read from the book, I already know. So... what the heck? It irritates me a little bit and leads me to suspect that the author is only trying to make it a selling point, rather than impart knowledge and improve mutual understanding.
Therefore, my one-star rating is my way of protesting against hype. I've had it enough in my daily life. So no, no more in my literary world.
Before reading this book, I thought it was about Muslim traditions according to its name. But sadly, it was not. To me, it seems that Jade business is the clue. However, the clue is intertwined with love. By the way, the love described in this book is way too much ideal. One has to know that the love is not about ups and downs. But it exists in the seemingly meaningless daily life. Plus, the descriptions and words about love is really flowery and they give you actual goose bumps. I kept feeling a sense of paradox in belief and practice when I was reading it. So,I wonder why didn't the writer get down to earth and dig into details about love. So, I think that this is just a pile of words and something you don't want to waste your time on. The reason why I finished it is that I don't like to quit and want to learn the mastery of this "wonderful" writer as a negative example to guide me how to tell a better story. dyslexia, drachmas, redumbnent,
Oh, the many feelings that I have. As someone not very familiar with the Hui or Muslims in China, I found The Jade King to be an engaging and eye-opening read. The novel vividly portrays the struggles of a Muslim Chinese family in Beijing across three generations, set against the backdrop of war and Mao’s era. It weaves together personal and political upheaval, offering a rare glimpse into the lives of the Hui community. There’s plenty of drama—perhaps a bit too much at times—with family tensions, societal pressures, and the weight of history all brought to life through compelling storytelling. A fascinating and immersive read.
an all-time classic. a little slow in the beginning but huo da makes you feel each character's heartache, even the ones that are obviously in the wrong (morally speaking). i cried twice reading the ending. revisiting weiming lake after this was almost traumatic.
I used to like this book, the touching romance, the beautiful words and description. But now as a grown up with more experiences, I really dislike the viewpoint and attitude of this book.
