Why the 17:18 series?

In Deuteronomy 17, Moses is leaving final instructions concerning the future of Israel. As a prophet of God, Moses foretells of when Israel will place a king over the nation (v. 14). In verse 18, the king is commanded to not simply acquire a copy of the law (the entire book of Deuteronomy) from the "scroll publishing house," but to hand write his own copy of the law. Thirty-four hundred years later, educators are "discovering" that students that physically write out their notes by hand have a much greater retention rate than simply hearing or visually reading the information. Apparently, God knew this to be true of the kings of Israel also. From such understanding came the conception of this series of books.

How to Use These Books

Each book is organized so that you can write out your very own copy of Scripture. You will be writing the Bible text only on the right hand page of the book. This should make for easier writing and also allows ample space on the left

I had the opportunity to review the Romans Journible. This is such a simple concept but it’s amazing in many ways. I learned in my college days that I retained and remembered information longer when I wrote my notes down as opposed to the times when I recorded the lectures or simply read the text. Writing things down definitely seems to cause me to think and reflect more on what I’m reading than when I’m only reading over it visually.

Another amazing benefit of the Journible is that I can have an entire Bible hand-written by me to pass down to my children and grandchildren some day. There is something very special about seeing a loved ones handwriting, especially when they are no longer with you…how special it would be to read God’s precious words in their handwriting. They can also write notes on the left hand side of the pages…notes of reflections, study notes, or even do Bible journaling and artwork on that side. There are also questions on the left side to prompt the Journible user to think about the verses…these questions are in light colored ink so that they can use them or write on top of them.

The books themselves are very nice looking and of great quality. The covers are black with gold lettering and a black ribbon bookmark is included. The spine has the title of the book in gold lettering as well. These books would look very nice lined up on a shelf.

Overall, this is an amazing concept and I’m very excited to have discovered it. I already shared about the Journibles with my small group at church and look forward to starting a new volume soon!

My Rating: 5 stars

We were going through Romans (with an emphasis on the theme of righteousness) for our yearly Men’s Prayer Advanced at my church, and I used this journable as we went through it. It was pretty cool to get to put all my notes in and to read though the whole book in my own handwriting. On top of that, I think Romans may be my new favorite book in the Bible. The whole theme of Christ’s righteousness on our account is just…. wow. The fact that it’s not about us but about Jesus’ righteousness is mind blowing.

Journibles are a new concept for me for studying the Word of God. I found this particular journal/devotional helpful. So here is how I understood it to work:

(I was using the Romans title)

-You copy the scripture out on the right hand side. Yes by the end of this journaling book you will have written out the entire book of Romans.

-On the left hand side is where you will write your own notes-thoughts about the passage just read, new revelations, etc. On some of the pages of notes the Journible gives questions to deeper understand the text.

So by the end you have written out a Bible book in your own hand, with notes of what stood out to you and have learned. This is an interesting learning and teaching tool and can be used in all kinds of settings: personal, Bible groups, or homeschool. I like how well put together this hardback version is. It is something tangible to be looked at again and then passed down to future generations. This is quite an ingenious idea. I like this type of journaling, it makes sense and I think helps to retain the knowledge longer. There are other books in this series and I am interested in the one on Proverbs.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

My Apple ate my reviews so I'm trying this again!!

What I really liked about the book: This book allowed my creative genie out of the bottle. I got to write out the whole book of Romans. There was no right or wrong. This is a pretty unique concept and I really spent more time meditating on God's word. There is plenty of space for my personal thoughts and I can pass this book down in the family if I choose to do so.

What I wish was different: I have larger handwriting and there just wasn't always enough room for all the verses. Some ended up getting squished and that makes the book not as pretty. I also wish the reflection questions were a bit more in depth and stimulating. I didn't feel like they helped me gain much new insight on Romans.

But I'll leave the final verdict up to you.

The 17:18 Series: Romans (which is the one I was sent to review) is a hardcover notebook. There are written instructions in the front, similar to the "How to Use These Books" section above. Then it is numbered, right side only, and the left is blank except for what appears to be penciled in questions to one or two of the verses on each page. It would make a delightful gift for a pastor or Bible student as they write out verses and write thoughts, notes, comments, basically making their own commentary. Or it would be excellent for church members if their pastor or Sunday school teacher or small group leader is doing an in-depth study of Romans (or the other books that are available) The 17:18 Series is also recommended for youth ministry or a discipleship tool. This is currently available for about about half of the books of the Bible.

I was thrilled when I heard of this series. I chose to do the Romans study. I love the set up of this book. One side you write out the verses - the other you can answer questions and take other notes. I loved that when I wrote it out, and read it over I was able to grasp more of the meaning. I have big messy writing and I had plenty of room. This is a beautiful hard back book that I have enjoyed being able to review.

I received this book through the Celebrate Lit Blogging Program --- all thoughts are my own.

I love this so much! I absolutely would recommend this to everyone. I enjoy writing in my Journible. I have the Romans one. It is absolutely great, and there is plenty of space. I use the extra space to write down prayers. It really is wonderful, and there isn't much that I can say beyond that, except that I hope you will try it. It would be a brilliant gift! If I were in the habit of giving stars to nonfiction...which I'm not.... this would receive five stars. ;)

I received this book as part of a promo tour but all thoughts and whatnot are mine alone.
