The Devil is dead…or is he? The World rejoiced when the word spread like wildfire that ‘The Devil’ had finally been vanquished. Little did they know that sometimes it better to deal with the Devil himself than his Advocate. The World quickly learned that the only currency the Advocate wallowed in was red – the color of vengeance. In the end it was true, the ‘Devil’ was dead. An innocent man wore the face of someone who wandered the darker underbelly of life and made the shadows cringe. Trevor was a good Catholic boy who shared groceries with his elderly neighbors; walked their pets; worked an honest job and tried to write the next great novel as he made his way in the world. The problem now was that dark world found out that Trevor was still alive. Would the Devil’s Advocate be enough to protect the innocent or would Erik use this chance to revive the Devil of his dreams?

Greetings, gentle readers. My name is Derekica Snake aka kiix. This is the part where I write about myself. It is harder than it looks. It is so much easier to write about fictional characters…hummm. Wait. I have a light blub moment.

On a dark and quiet evening in the month of April, a little girl child came into the world in St. Joesph General Hospital. Upon seeing the little girl with the little curl in the middle of her forehead, the father was heard to remark…why does she have red hair? At that moment I’ve been known as the milkman’s kid, oops, I meant she’s been known as the milkman’s kid. See, this is why I write in first person. If it works for you, stick with it.

My favorite book was “Green eggs and ham”. Apparently my mother got so annoyed with me reciting it that it accidently on purpose got tossed out the window of a moving car. So I guess I started writing my own stories once I was taught to print. I’ve always loved writing fiction. In elementary and secondary school we were required to keep a journal. I didn’t want to. I love to write but not about myself. I just wrote little ideas down and handed them in. I graduated so I guess it was good.

I thought I was in deep fascination with a boy in grade seven who was very into Star Trek. I had no clue what he was talking about so I started learning about Star Trek and now it was what was his name? Sci-fi segued into Fantasy and from there I never looked back. I was a big Star Wars geek (pre-episode 1) and wrote pastiche Han Solo adventures as a teenager.

My writing began to lean towards my current selection of offerings. I initially was a little distressed. I thought I was off – way off. I was uncomfortable with the content and toned it down or cut it out completely on second draft attempts. However, it kept cropping back up and I thought I was going to have to pull my hair out to make it stop but then…on May 6, 2006 at 9:15 a.m. I discovered “Ai No Kusabi” on youtube.

That was also the same time that I realized that what I had been writing and hiding away for years had a name. Yaoi. If it had a name others were reading and writing it so I wasn’t the lone pervert out in the world. I took my hands out of my hair and put my fingers on the keyboard and embraced the world of Yaoi.

It only took me six months to figure out how to start posting stories on the Internet on www.adultfanfiction.net. It wasn’t long before I moved from writing AnK fan fiction to posting my own original Yaoi writing under the pseudonym kiix.

I started writing daily. I found a continuing education course on Professional Creative Writing in a local city and started taking courses. There were some tips and facts that were good but the social networking was the key. It was after this that I started actively exploring getting my works published. That expensive piece of paper honed my confidence enough to start sending out queries and posting my first drafts right to the net.

While I had to pony up time and money to self publish once the rejection e-mails came in, I didn’t mind. I think it was the start of something good. I think? I know it was the start of something good.

Welcome to my version of the world of Yaoi. I look forward to leaving my touch in your mind.

Whuh?!

Will you just look what awesomely crazy rapefest brainwave saw the light of day!

I should have gobbled this right up. But the truth is, I was gritting my teeth and panting ‘Gotta Get Thru This’ Daniel Bedingfield style after hitting the 60% mark. And I’m just so confused as how to review this!

This book is for you if you have a weakness for dark and obscure, barely readable niche stories that still offer glimpses of brilliance. It’ll probably help, though, to have some experience with fanfic/freefic that’s written by chaotic minds without a team of proof readers and editors. This book may no longer be free, it was most certainly not lovingly nurtured by grammar gurus before it was officially (self) published.

I can definitely see the potential of the author of My Hostage My Love. It’s shimmering underneath a mountain of... issues. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have issues with the rape and torture. I love experiencing creative and bizarre stories that score high on the Scale of Disturbia and WTFery. But here, it was just way too much work for very little reward. I struggled with the numerous grammar mistakes and errors. Now this is something that I’m usually not that anal about, as I’m not a native English speaker myself. Here, it was impossible to ignore though. Then there were abrupt changes in the narrative time (it switches from past to present tense and back again without any explanation), sudden flashbacks and flash forwards, the MC’s dialogue is not always quoted yet some of his thoughts are…and that’s just the tip of the iceberg really.

Right from the very start, I felt like I’d been dumped at sea in a dinghy without paddles. So much confusion! So little to cling onto! With this book, you have to work hard to latch onto the author’s mind, to cross the gaps she forgets to fill in to make some sense of it. Perhaps I would have persevered if the actual plot had pushed forward instead of fallen prey to repetition and to the MC’s endless self-analysis and retrospection. As it was, my dinghy unfortunately slowly deflated and I drowned in a sea of chaos.

I don’t know, maybe I should have started with the well-known Cake or That’s What Brothers Do instead of this lesser known story. But then again, perhaps this book, that apparently started out as a free online read, should never have been published before killing a thousand darlings and letting a team of editors and proofreaders loose on it like pit bulls. I’m intrigued enough to check out other works by this author, but I’m afraid I cannot recommend My Hostage My Love in its current state.

Wow, that was awesome! There's not many abduction-and-god-awful-violent-repeated-rape m/m stories that are really ultra-soppy deeply madly truly love-for-ever stories. Wait... Bloodraven, maybe; that first rape was a shocker. OK, so maybe it's that there's not many abduction-and-god-awful-violent-repeated-rape-of-a-HUMAN m/m stories that are really ultra-soppy deeply madly truly love-for-ever stories. No wait, I was forgetting Sean Michael's Gravity, and that's worse, because the MC is raped with a broken bottle. Man, that's really awful. Oh, and Collateral Damage. Ugh, that's worse too. Oh, and traxie's Forgotten, or her Forever Ignored, which I hope will eventually be deeply madly truly love stories, although at the moment they're both still just rape stories...

Hmmm, OK, so in fact, when I think about it, there are millions of abduction and god-awful-rape stories that turn into tender, deep, true-love stories, but this one is different! Better! It does vaguely interesting things with narrative structure! The MC has more internal motivation than any other m/m story ever! It's really good and you should read it IF you like rape-fics. I know that's not everyone. And although there's rape (OK, multiple rapes, by multiple people), and the rapes are horrible, definitely no-one gets raped with a broken bottle, which, I found out last year, is where my personal line gets drawn.

That publisher's blurb is terrible and the book is far more compelling than it leads you to think.

If you've read Snake before then you know where this one is going--someplace dark and painful.

This story is filled with pain--emotional, physical and psychological, you know, the usual fare for a Snake novel. Things are not what you think they are and often the ones who love us most are the ones who revel in hurting us--and we've given them the power to do so.

There are editing errors, frequent in places and if the twisted turns of this mindful@k weren't as delicious as they were I'd have rated it a 3. So if that will piss you off, pass on it.

As messed up, and I'm not using the term glibly, as the characters are, as depraved and cruel as their actions are--I liked each one of them. This is a beautiful foray into godawful codependency. Love it. For Snake devotees this falls somewhere between Cake and That's What Brothers Do in the plot.

The marble kills me in the story.

Favorite quotes:
"Maybe it’s a test of your skill and mental fortitude to keep it, but if you truly value something – you keep it in a dark secret place."

We are what we are to our enemies and the public but also we are human and need some measure of happiness not to wind up blowing our own brains out because of self loathing.

After reading and loving the Blood Nation series I was looking forward to some more pacy, sexy characters and zippy humour from Derekica Snake. However this book was a huge disapointment. It started out like the plot of 'Cake', but without the fangs and quickly descended into repetition and confusion. Alot of the content is told in the way of flashbacks-Trevor having lost his memory. As he rediscovers his identity his understanding of his circumstances becomes clearer-as does who he loves.
The main problem I found with this book was with the chunks of back story that were repeated continually. This could have been a good book if it had been edited, but because of the repetiton the story dragged and became unbearably slow in the last 60 pages. Thank goodness I've finished it!

This book is not for the fainthearted, there are a lot of rape scenes and it's difficult to read at times but I enjoyed all the twists and turns, it wasn't predictable at all. However, there are a lot of errors, I can cope with a few but they were all over the place and it got irritating after a while.

I don't really know what to say that I haven't already when it comes to this author. Her books are exactly what I need and are brilliant when it comes to the story, the characters as well as the overall execution of her idea. I love it how she can make me adore the bad guy, sympathize with the rapist and live through the excruciating life of the main character. But what's more, I almost feed on every single word I read. Truly, after one of her books, I feel as if had no idea what books even were for months before I started reading hers.

I also admit I am biased when it comes to her books. I love the pain and the torture, but most of all I always end up smitten by the story. That said, not everyone will like this book, and even if you've read a few more of her masterpieces, it's not a guarantee you will like this one.

The story is similar to two of her books I've already read, but only in details. The overall plot is very much unique as well as original. Now for the reason why I gave it four stars instead of five.

It lacks polish. The lines between the past, present and the dreams are just too jumbled to be clear and it was very frustrating at the beginning. What I also missed was the more definite ending, with experiences I was teased with through out the story. But this is in the end only story about Trevor. I find that I really needed a bit of the Devil.

Still, I just loved it.

Those familiar with Derekica Snake's work will not be surprised at the level of violence and darkness is this novel, and in fact, those who have read Cake (Blood Nation, #1) by Derekica Snake will find some scenes very familiar, even if not exactly the same.

But for those unfamiliar with this author's style, then be prepared for a brutal story of anguish, confusion, rape and a twisted kind of love. It is a love story, but not of the chocolates and roses kind - more of the assassin, beating and non-con sex kind. Definitely not for the faint of heart, and definitely not for everyone.

To give a brief synopsis of this story is difficult, and not one I can do without giving some major spoilers away. What I can say is, is not everything is as it seems; victims are not necessarily victims despite their suffering; good guys are not always good, nor the bad always bad. There are a never-ending supply of twists to the plot, and just when you think everything is clear, well, be prepared to think again.

Derekica Snake's characters are not always like-able. They are flawed beings, but they are undeniably human flaws. Her characters are never perfect but no matter how imperfect they are, in the end, they all realize that everyone is worthy of being loved, provided they have the strength to hold onto it.

3.5 stars.. this book is basically an m/m rapefest. Trevor was living quietly as a bank teller before being abducted by the abusive but beautiful Erik. It emerges out he has lost huge chunks of his memory which comes back to him as the plot twists and turns.

4.5 This book deals with lots of dark themes such as kidnapping, rape, torture, prostitution, etc., which is normally not my typical kind of book but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

I thought from the title that it was going to be about a guy who's kidnapped and what he experienced during his captivity, etc. but instead it turned out to be totally different than what I expected. About 20% into the book, things start to shift and there is significant twist which totally kept me intrigued until the end. The author did such a great job writing about and developing the characters that I actually felt a connection with the kidnapper and found myself feeling sorry for him ... and I am happy to say there was a HEA.

My final update on this book was exactly how I felt while reading this book. I felt like I had fallen down the rabbit hole and while trying to find my way out of this story, I headed down different paths taking different strengths of hallucinogenics and totally getting lost in another story. Every time I thought I understood, another reality popped up and changed the direction and strength of the story.

I have liked each and every one of Derekica's stories and this is no exception. She has a way of making you cheer for the bad guys, even if the definition and degree of bad changes over the story. There is usually no clear good or evil. She has an uncanny way of redefining evil and I am ever fascinated in how Derekica spins her stories. Some times I worry about what is in her head! hee

My Hostage My Love begins with torture, rape, kidnapping and fear. It is very graphic. If you have read That's What Brothers Do, you will understand the flavor and texture of this story. Right away Derekica immerses you in a storyline that you will later question in reality. Does it really happen? Is Trevor just a poor helpless hostage or is there more? What unfolds after the initial set up is more alternative realities for our main characters Erik, Trevor, Olga and later Henry.

The faults of this story are small, such as editing issues and honestly I spent a lot of time confused and held hostage myself. I have yet to really be able to say that was a bad or a good thing. For now, I will say it is a good thing as keeping me guessing and on my toes is always fun. This story was hefty in that there were a lot of plot twists.

I recommend this book for those of you who have liked That's What Brothers Do. I know I found it to be a gratifying read.

It's like an orange. You peel away the rough texture to enjoy the fruit inside. It's sweet. It's tender. It's welcome. But...it's underneath that coating, that rough textured coating that must be torn apart, removed. You read one of Snake's books and you want to savor every moment. You feel the lash and discover yourself loving the handler. You lick your fingers as you reread moments, words, thoughts trying to catch every last drop and still squeeze never wishing to let go.

I so enjoyed this story. Trevor, Tre-don, the Devil. Azure, Erik, the Devil's Advocate. I hated Erik in the beginning, but Snake knows how to make the reader love the handler. The more you know, the more the story grows and the characters wet your appetite for more. This story will do exactly that and just like I did, you will lick your fingers, re-read moments, and find yourself wanting more.

At first, it was weird because it seemed almost like a redux of her LEVS (renamed Blood Nation for publication, I think) series, so I was weirding out about that. But then...it gets weirdly better. There are some rather nice elements. Parts of it are weird/don't really seem to fit. The resolution seemed a bit like a cop out because it wasn't completely...It didn't incorporate all of the elements I thought were vital, something like that. Enough was there, though, that it had a pretty large impact.

And for some weird reason, I feel like I've written a review for this before, but I guess not...

Much later EtA:
I've found it. The definition of Derekica Snake. It is this:

This story was intense and completely shattering all in one go. The twist took an interesting turn and the plot just seemed to thicken like blood in comparison to water. The story just drew me in which is not uncommon when reading one of Derekica's books. I really wanted to give this book a 5 star, but the edits required stopped me from doing so.

I do however really look forward to more from this author and that's all I'm going to say on the matter. Why? Because I'm not going to recap the story and give you spoilers and it's already explained in the description what the book is about.

Derekica is the Mary Calmes of dark and I can't get enough :)
My favorite? That's What Brothers Do by Derekica Snake

Derekica definitely has a "type" when she writes her characters and her books centers around similar themes. I don't care how similar and familiar all her stories are because I freakin' love them!"

Great great read, kinda confusing at times but was still great.
We have Trevor, who has amnesia from and accident and Erik his past lover who is obsessed with Trevor and takes him hostage.
I really don't Wana give away to much about the book because I went in blind and was pleasantly surprised by who well I loved Trevor and Erik. I definitely did not like Henry or Eldon....
Non-con is present throughout the entirety of this novel but also underlying devotion.

Maybe I would have finished it last year, but I can't bring myself to read it further. The general idea is brilliant, even if it resembles a bit other stories - the kidnapping, makeover, multiple personality, amnesia - but there was something surprising. My problem is that it was repetitive, confusing. I have no problem with the darker aspects, but when they happen over and over and you have the impression you're slooooowly moving forward in a tight spiral, no, it makes it difficult to breathe and I feel I have the weight of the world on my shoulders. I want to be able to claw my way out of stories, even if it's bloody and difficult, and I couldn't, I was lost and at a certain point I wasn't able to care for the characters. That's What Brothers Do can be hideous sometimes, but there's a progression I didn't feel in this book. Sorry, not for me.

ETA: I considered it DNF because I skimmed A LOT to get to the end.

This is a really hard one to rate and review. My Hostage, My Love is probably the worst edited book I have ever read. In addition to an almost endless supply of typos, superfluous words, and flipped words, the author provided us with plenty of poorly constructed sentences, verb tense and number errors and many other grammar mistakes. Typically, I would have delegated a book with so many errors to my DNF list, but this read kept my attention, especially once I hit the 22% mark and things got very interesting.

What Snake lacks is technical writing skills, she makes up for in fresh ideas. I often found the story to be confusing; the ending didn't thrill me, but Snake still managed to keep my interest and even take me by surprise several times, and that doesn't often happen.

IMO, there is no excuse for editing this egregious, and unfortunately I will remember My Hostage, My Love more for that than for its interesting storyline.

This is another good read from Derekica Snake. From the books I've read from her so far it seems like her MC's really have to work for a happy ending. They get screwed over and over again (no pun intended..maybe) but they make it through. This story had me mesmerized and just like her other books it has me still thinking about it days later. I love Erik & Trevor!!! This is a dark story maybe more tame then some of her others but still dark. If you can't or don't want to read about non-con and murder then this is not the book for you.

I absolutely loved the twist of the story line and the different take on the writing style. Never have I felt such agony and rooted for the villains of a story as well as the main character in it. The typos threw me off many times and the slide from past memories to current actions could have been clarified more but the basic plot was outstanding! I loved this book! :)

What a dark, twisted, rape-filled, wonderfully written story. I'm not sure I wanted to root for any of these characters but felt compelled to finish the book as soon as possible to find out what happened to them. Typos bothered me a bit, but most definately a strong read.

Not sure who I'd recommend this to...not for the faint of heart.

I love your Derekica Snake. The complexity and depth of emotions of the characters in your books continue to amaze me. I love your ability to capture mental devolution and total the total mind fucks of your characters. I find myself constantly thinking about your stories months after I read them. I am sure this will be the same.

For the most part I liked this book. I was not able to rate it higher because I felt like the ending really dragged out. There was a lot of explaining and absolutely no action. I thought it would have been better if the author did some of that explaining a little earlier in the book, that way reading the ending wasn't quite so drawn out.
