I first read this ghost story during an English course in Ireland in 1978 or 1979. I liked it a lot, so I’ve used it now in my private lessons to a student. The result has been excellent – the student has enjoyed it as much as I did.

I had lost the original book, so I bought it again a few months ago. This is a new edition with color pictures. The old one had black & white drawings. Another little difference is that they have now set the events of the plot in the year 2000. Except for that, it is exactly the same story.

Something funny about this reader is that it is not an adapted classic. The story was written on purpose for a pre-intermediate level, with 1,200 headwords and apt for a European A2 level. That said, I have to admit that it is a very good story. The protagonist is a lonely man who lost his wife 12 years ago. After her death, he realizes his bedroom is haunted, but the ghost who visits him is a playful one – at least, at the beginning. They make up a game which the protagonist must play every night before going to sleep. Nevertheless, over the passage of time, the game becomes more and more dangerous. What is the outcome of the increasing danger? That’s something you will have to find on your own.

*book: Penguin, level 3
*time: 11/21, 180 minutes
*summary: William Harris, lonely, ghost, chess, dangerous, 12, change
*questions:
1. William who was the main character experienced strange thing that played game with ghost. Have you ever experienced something strange?
Yes. When I was about five eyars old, on one day at night, I slept with my sister in one bed (it was the upper one of a bunk bed). I suddenly woke up and realized I was on the floor, not in the bed. There was no sound of falling, and I didn't hurt my body at all. In other words, I floated on air and fell down like a leaf!! I am not sure it was a dream...
2. Can you play chess?
No. I have never played it. It is not famous in japan, and looks like difficult.

chapter 1
the review

I will write a review. what did I think? at first I really loved the silly writing style, and then the style got bad, but turns out it was bad all along and I just had too much fun to notice. or it became too much of the good stuff. I still think it was real that it was good in the beginning, but what do I know, maybe I was just imagining it. I liked it when I laughed at the place about the details of the bedside lamp's chord and plug and light socket, and the author William Harris told me, don't laugh at these details, they are very important for the story. so I thought, it was very fun that the author knew I was laughing, but less fun that I was told to stop. maybe, he didn't know, and only made a lucky guess. I cannot know for sure. you will think I murdered my wife, but that is not true, unless it is. what do I know. I wrote this review all in pencil without any full stops or commas. my editor had to work hard to make this review legible for you. but, this is just my imagination, since I died before any of this happened. three stars!

chapter 2
postscript

hello I'm am the editor. I found the manuscript of this review written in pencil without any full stops and or commas. I had to work very hard. when I found the manuscript there were no cats in the room (or outside of the room!) I thought the author would've liked it if I would make the review legible and put it on goodreads.com so I did

I probably shouldn't be rating this at all as I read it when I was a kid (probably 8 or 9), but I still remember Poldy. Indeed that was how I found the name of the book; I knew it was about a poltergeist called Poldy, involved chess, and seemed somehow not quite childish to my childish mind. Anything that has stuck with me that long (over 35 years) has to have something, right? Reading the synopsis, it came back even more vividly. It was in my class library and I have to wonder at that now. Reading all the reviews that bring it up as a teaching tool surprised me. Someone else mentioned reading it in Ireland. Was it used throughout Irish schools in the 70s? Whatever the reason, it stuck with me.
By the way it was first published in 1977, not 1986.

It's a children's book. Bought it online in a rush without knowing that. I thought it was about chess but it wasn't. It's about a ghost who plays a game (not a chess game) every night with the author. It started as good and fun and then turns into something bad. Kids might enjoy it but of course I found it boring 😅

Ghost story about a writer living alone in his house after his wife dies. He writes about a new ghost in his bedroom. Antics unfold. I got bored after the ‘twist’ was revealed.

I haven't read a book in english for a while.
So it was a good choice to "unrust" my english.
The story is about a writer , William Harris and his secret.
When he lost his beloved wife, a ghost appeared in his life and started a game with him.
At first it was playful and the game was funny.
But as time went by, it became darker and more dangerous.
Who was the ghost and why it haunted William, I'll let you discover it on your own, cause the novel is only 52 pages.

Q:In this book, William (main character) play games with his friend, Louis and Poldy. What would you like to do with your friends as a pastime?
A:When I was a child, I almost played outside to play soccer etc. But now, I almost play inside to go to karaoke or bowling.

I really like to read mystery novels like this book, so I could enjoy reading. I thought that ghost is all scary existence, but my thinking changed after I read this story.

I read this as a kid for my English classes, and it really haunted me afterwards. The language is simple, but the terror increases slowly, until the ending which was just.. Maybe too scary for my 10 year old self. Reading it again now, I realize some of the twists might have been predictable, but still... It's effective and achieves what it aimed for. I'm still fond of this quick read, and less fond of playing chess against myself now.

Best scary book I've read. Book written by William Harris but edited by his best friend. Book about a man for a number of years, William plays a game with a ghost before he goes to sleep. The ghost is a poltergeist that William calls ‘Poldy’. At the beginning William and Poldy play a friendly game every night, but then the game begins to change. It becomes a dangerous game.
