In 1694, Age of Enlightenment leader Francois-Marie Arouet, known as Voltaire, was born in Paris. Jesuit-educated, he began writing clever verses by the age of 12. He launched a lifelong, successful playwriting career in 1718, interrupted by imprisonment in the Bastille. Upon a second imprisonment, in which Francois adopted the pen name Voltaire, he was released after agreeing to move to London. There he wrote Lettres philosophiques (1733), which galvanized French reform. The book also satirized the religious teachings of Rene Descartes and Blaise Pascal, including Pascal's famed "wager" on God. Voltaire wrote: "The interest I have in believing a thing is not a proof of the existence of that thing." Voltaire's French publisher was sent to the Bastille and Voltaire had to escape from Paris again, as judges sentenced the book to be "torn and burned in the Palace." Voltaire spent a calm 16 years with his deistic mistress, Madame du Chatelet, in Lorraine. He met the 27 year old married mother when he was 39. In his memoirs, he wrote: "I found, in 1733, a young woman who thought as I did, and decided to spend several years in the country, cultivating her mind." He dedicated Traite de metaphysique to her. In it the Deist candidly rejected immortality and questioned belief in God. It was not published until the 1780s. Voltaire continued writing amusing but meaty philosophical plays and histories. After the earthquake that leveled Lisbon in 1755, in which 15,000 people perished and another 15,000 were wounded, Voltaire wrote Poème sur le désastre de Lisbonne (Poem on the Lisbon Disaster): "But how conceive a God supremely good/ Who heaps his favours on the sons he loves,/ Yet scatters evil with as large a hand?"
Voltaire purchased a chateau in Geneva, where, among other works, he wrote Candide (1759). To avoid Calvinist persecution, Voltaire moved across the border to Ferney, where the wealthy writer lived for 18 years until his death. Voltaire began to openly challenge Christianity, calling it "the infamous thing." He wrote Frederick the Great: "Christianity is the most ridiculous, the most absurd, and bloody religion that has ever infected the world." Voltaire ended every letter to friends with "Ecrasez l'infame" (crush the infamy — the Christian religion). His pamphlet, The Sermon on the Fifty (1762) went after transubstantiation, miracles, biblical contradictions, the Jewish religion, and the Christian God. Voltaire wrote that a true god "surely cannot have been born of a girl, nor died on the gibbet, nor be eaten in a piece of dough," or inspired "books, filled with contradictions, madness, and horror." He also published excerpts of Testament of the Abbe Meslier, by an atheist priest, in Holland, which advanced the Enlightenment. Voltaire's Philosophical Dictionary was published in 1764 without his name. Although the first edition immediately sold out, Geneva officials, followed by Dutch and Parisian, had the books burned. It was published in 1769 as two large volumes. Voltaire campaigned fiercely against civil atrocities in the name of religion, writing pamphlets and commentaries about the barbaric execution of a Huguenot trader, who was first broken at the wheel, then burned at the stake, in 1762. Voltaire's campaign for justice and restitution ended with a posthumous retrial in 1765, during which 40 Parisian judges declared the defendant innocent. Voltaire urgently tried to save the life of Chevalier de la Barre, a 19 year old sentenced to death for blasphemy for failing to remove his hat during a religious procession. In 1766, Chevalier was beheaded after being tortured, then his body was burned, along with a copy of Voltaire's Philosophical Dictionary. Voltaire's statue at the Pantheon was melted down during Nazi occupation. D. 1778.

لن أتكلم كلمة واحدة فالمؤلف فولتير و المترجم طه حسين و النشر الإلكتروني لهنداوي يعني متعة مجانية حقيقية.
ما حياة الناس إذن؟ أيتها الفضيلة بماذا نفعتني؟ لقد خانتني امرأتان. و هذه الثالثة لم تقترف إثما. و قد قضي عليها بالموت. كل ما فيّ من خير كان مصدره شقاء لي. و لم أرتفع إلى أرقى المراتب إلا لأهوي إلى الدرك الأسفل من الشقاء. و لو قد كنت شريرا ككثير من الناس لظفرت بما يظفرون به من السعادة.

دوستانِ گرانقدر، داستانی که به قلمِ ولترِ خردمند و بزرگ نوشته شده است، به نوعی اقتباس از داستانهایِ اخلاقیِ ایرانِ باستان است که این موضوع نشان از شناخت و دانشِ ولتر نسبت به بزرگان و ادیبانِ این سرزمین همچون فردوسی، زرتشت و سعدی و دیگر شاعران و نویسندگان و فلاسفهٔ ایرانی دارد... داستانِ صدیق از ۱۸ فصل تشکیل شده است و با آنکه داستان به اندیشه هایِ خردگرایانهٔ ولتر هیچ شباهتی ندارد، ولی ولتر سعی کرده تا این داستانِ شرقی را به نوعی با زبانی شیرین بیان کند، ولی بازهم سخن از تقدیرِ الهی و سرنوشت و اینگونه موهوماتِ مذهبی در میان است.. و اما برسیم به چکیده ای از این داستان : «صدیق» یا «زادیگ» جوانی باهوش، اهلِ اندیشه و فلسفه و البته راستگو است که محبوبیتِ زیادی نزدِ مردم و پادشاه دارد.. او هربار در دلِ داستان، به دلایلِ گوناگون و بیرونی، دچارِ دردسر و دسیسه میشود.. دو بار از سویِ زنانی به نامِ «سمیرا» و «عذرا» ضربه خورده است و اسیرِ حسادت و بدخواهیِ دیگران شده، ولی همچنان همه چیز را با دیدی خردمندانه مینگرد.. پادشاهِ بابل یعنی «موابدار» او را دوست دارد و ملکه «عشتروت»، به مرورِ زمان دلباختهٔ صدیق میشود و صدیق نیز دلباختهٔ ملکه میشود، ولی توانِ خیانت به پادشاه را ندارد.. خلاصه پادشاه که از عشقِ پنهانیِ همسرش و صدیق باخبر میشود، قصدِ کشتنِ آنها را دارد و صدیق به مصر میگریزد و در آنجا برایِ دفاع از یک زنِ زیبا ولی حیله گر، با شوهرِ زن درگیر شده و به صورتِ اتفاقی شوهرِ آن زن را به قتل میرساند و مصریان او را به عنوانِ برده به یک مردِ عرب میفروشند و صدیقِ بیچاره با اربابِ جدیدش راهیِ عربستان میشود.. ولی اینبار نیز هوشِ او سبب شده تا نزدِ ارباب و مردم محبوب واقع شود.. ولی بازهم دچارِ دردسر میشود و اینبار در عربستان میخواهند زنده زنده او را بسوزانند و ناگهان همان زنِ عرب برای نجاتِ صدیق اقدام کرده و صدیق پس از نجات به سوریه میرود و متوجه میشود که پادشاهِ بابل مرده و بابل را آشوب فرا گرفته است.. حال تمامِ فکر و ذکر صدیق پیدا کردنِ ملکه عشتروت است
عزیزانم، بهتر است خودتان این داستان و ماجراهایِ عجیبی که برایِ صدیق پیش می آید را خوانده و از سرانجامِ داستانِ صدیق و سرزمینِ بابِل آگاه شوید

صدیق پس از آنکه از گرفتاری هایی که از هوشِ وی نشأت گرفته بود، نجات پیدا کرد، بطورِ کامل به این باور رسید که خیلی باهوش و با فراست بودن چیزِ خوبی نیست و میتواند کاملاً خطرناک باشد. او تصمیمِ جدی گرفت که در آینده برای لبهایِ خود قفلی تهیه کند و قبل از باز کردنِ قفل، کلامِ خود را سبک سنگین نماید

حين وصلت للأجزاء الأخيرة تساءلت، هل قرأ فولتير القرآن الكريم؟
فالفصل الذي يلتقي فيه زديج بالناسك مقتبس من قصة التقاء موسى عليه السلام بالخضر
حقا سؤال حيرني ..
وأنت تقرأ هذه المغامرات لن تشعر أبدا أنها مترجمة، كأنك تقرأ بأسلوب طه حسين المحبب إلى قلبي
القصة رائعة مليئة بالحكم والقيم المستوحاة من الثقافة الشرقية، .. نوقشت أغلب الفصول بطريقة فلسفية غير أن البعض الآخر كان بسيطاً جداً
عموماً تستحق القراءة
فالفصل الذي يلتقي فيه زديج بالناسك مقتبس من قصة التقاء موسى عليه السلام بالخضر

Voltaire? Filosofia? Que medo!
Pois, afinal, não dói nada; quando muito a barriga, pelo riso...
Breves anotações sobre os oito contos seleccionados para esta edição (todos 5*):
1. Assim vai o mundo
Visão de Babuc
O anjo responsável pelo departamento da Alta Ásia, ouviu uns zunzuns sobre os excessos dos Persas e, antes de castigar ou destruir a cidade de Persépolis, envia Babuc em averiguações. Este, entre bons e maus, encontrou de tudo um pouco... "se nem tudo está bem, nem tudo está mal."
2. O carregador zarolho
"Os dois olhos que possuímos em nada melhoram a nossa condição. Serve-nos um para ver os bens da vida e o outro para lhe ver os males. Muita gente tem o mau hábito de fechar o primeiro, mas poucos fecham o segundo. Eis a razão pela qual há tantas pessoas que prefeririam ser cegas a verem tudo o que veem."
Mesrour era zarolho, feio, sujo e esfarrapado. Um dia viu passar uma linda princesa, apaixonou-se e decidiu conquistá-la.
3. Cosi-Sancta
Um pequeno mal por um grande bem
Novela africana
Cosi-Sancta era uma jovem, muito bela e virtuosa, prometida a "um velhote encarquilhado". Consultou o pároco sobre se seria feliz no casamento ao que este lhe respondeu:
"— Minha filha, a tua virtude causará desgraças, mas serás um dia canonizada por teres sido três vezes infiel ao teu marido."
A jovem ficou chocada e ao pedir mais explicações ao pároco ele só lhe adiantou que "as três vezes não deviam ser interpretadas como três encontros com o mesmo amante, mas sim como três aventuras diferentes."
Cosi-Sancta quase teve uma apoplexia...
4. Memnon
ou a sabedoria humana
"Memnon concebeu um dia o insensato projecto de ser perfeitamente sábio. Não há homem a quem essa loucura não tenha alguma vez ocorrido."
Memnon fez então o seu plano de sabedoria e preparou-se para o aplicar. Será que teve sucesso?
5. Bababec e os faquires
Dois amigos (um brâmane e outro muçulmano) visitam um pagode onde vivem bandos de faquires, sendo Bababec o mais famoso e muito consultado pela sua sabedoria.
"— Acreditais — perguntou-lhe Omri — que eu possa chegar à morada de Brama?
— Conforme — disse o faquir. — Como viveis, Omri?
— Trato — disse ele — de ser bom cidadão, bom esposo, bom pai e bom amigo. Empresto dinheiro sem juros aos ricos e dou aos pobres. Promovo a paz entre os meus vizinhos.
— Não meteis algumas vezes pregos no cu?
— Nunca, meu pai reverendo.
— Lamento. Dessa maneira, não ireis certamente para o décimo nono Céu, e é uma pena."
6. Micromegas
História filosófica
Micromegas é um jovem de um planeta que gira em volta da estrela Sírio. Gosta de passear pela Via Láctea, o que para ele é fácil devido aos seus conhecimentos de astronomia e à sua altura: cerca de 36 quilómetros. Certo dia chegou a Saturno onde fez amizade com um filósofo anão (que media menos de 2 quilómetros). Decidiram viajar juntos e chegaram à Terra. Num primeiro reconhecimento, só viram uns pequenos charcos (os oceanos) e uns grãozinhos pontiagudos (as montanhas) que lhes arranhavam os pés. Pareceu-lhes ser um lugar desabitado porque "as pessoas de bom senso nunca morariam num lugar como este." Acabam a ser surpreendidos ao acharem umas coisas minúsculas, não visíveis a olho nu.
7. Os dois consolados
Este é pequenino (só de duas páginas) com uma moral da história muito óbvia mas muito engraçada.
8. Zadig ou o Destino
História oriental
Um conto extenso que relata as peripécias de Zadig, um jovem inteligente e de bom coração. Que umas vezes tem sorte e outras azar. Na introdução, o autor diz ser um texto árabe de antes do tempo em que se estava a iniciar a escrita de Mil e Uma Noites, o que se deduz ter algumas semelhanças com essas histórias. Não sei, porque conheço pouco de Xerazade, mas encantei-me com Zadig.
Pois, afinal, não dói nada; quando muito a barriga, pelo riso...
Breves anotações sobre os oito contos seleccionados para esta edição (todos 5*):
1. Assim vai o mundo
Visão de Babuc

História filosófica
Micromegas é um jovem de um planeta que gira em volta da estrela Sírio. Gosta de passear pela Via Láctea, o que para ele é fácil devido aos seus conhecimentos de astronomia e à sua altura: cerca de 36 quilómetros. Certo dia chegou a Saturno onde fez amizade com um filósofo anão (que media menos de 2 quilómetros). Decidiram viajar juntos e chegaram à Terra. Num primeiro reconhecimento, só viram uns pequenos charcos (os oceanos) e uns grãozinhos pontiagudos (as montanhas) que lhes arranhavam os pés. Pareceu-lhes ser um lugar desabitado porque "as pessoas de bom senso nunca morariam num lugar como este." Acabam a ser surpreendidos ao acharem umas coisas minúsculas, não visíveis a olho nu.

Este é pequenino (só de duas páginas) com uma moral da história muito óbvia mas muito engraçada.
8. Zadig ou o Destino
História oriental
Um conto extenso que relata as peripécias de Zadig, um jovem inteligente e de bom coração. Que umas vezes tem sorte e outras azar. Na introdução, o autor diz ser um texto árabe de antes do tempo em que se estava a iniciar a escrita de Mil e Uma Noites, o que se deduz ter algumas semelhanças com essas histórias. Não sei, porque conheço pouco de Xerazade, mas encantei-me com Zadig.

Zadig, or the Book of Fate (1747), is Voltaire’s first novella of ideas, and, although it lacks the inexorability of its disciplined younger brother Candide (1759), it shares its comic vision and realistic assessment of the world. Featuring a cast of Babylonians, Egyptians, and Arabs, Zadig clearly takes for its model the Oriental tale—Galland’s French translation of The Arabian Nights had been completed in 1717—which was already famous for its marvelous incidents and episodic from. Part conte philosophique, part apologue, and part picaresque adventure (with a bit of the detective story and Solomonic wisdom tale thrown in), Zadig never ceases to entertain.
The novella relates the adventures of Zadig, a shrewd, bright honest young man who experiences the vicissitudes of life: he becomes, in turn, a betrayed husband, a prisoner, a prime minister, a slave, a robber gang’s prisoner, a knight in shining armor, a fake physician, the companion of a hermit (who turns out to be angel) and, finally, the King of Babylon.
Zadig continues to seek for a pattern in the good and the evil, in the up-and-down, of life. Jesrad (the angel disguised as a hermit) gives him the closest thing he ever gets to an explantion:
”That great and first Cause has created an infinite Number of Worlds, and no two of them alike. This vast Variety is an Attribute of his Omnipotence. There are not two Leaves on the Trees throughout the Universe, nor any two Globes of Light amongst the Myriad of Stars that deck the infinite Expanse of Heaven, which are perfectly alike. And whatever you see on that small Atom of Earth, whereof you are a Native, must exist in the Place, and at the Time appointed, according to the immutable Decrees of him who comprehends the Whole …. Frail Mortal! Cease to contend with what you ought to adore.” “But, said Zadig — whilst the Sound of the Word “But” dwelt upon his Tongue, the Angel took his Flight towards the tenth Sphere. Zadig sunk down upon his Knees, and acknowledg’d an over-ruling Providence with all the Marks of the profoundest Submission. The Angel, as he was soaring towards the Clouds, cried out in distinct Accents: “Make thy Way towards Babylon.”

Zadig (1749) is a funny short story by Voltaire, in which the infamous Enlightenment 'philosophe' tells the story of how an unfortunate man - who is left by his wife, imprisoned, almost put to death, made a slave, betrayed by opponents and friends alike and, above all, cut off from his sweetheart - becomes the Babylonian Emperor.
I'm not sure what Voltaire's message is with this book - he occasionally inserts the philosophical questioning - apart from the fact that being just, good and wise will lead to long-term prosperity and happiness. In other words: overcoming hardships and not letting oneself be steered off course through adversity.
The quality of this short story is not that good. It can be that this is due to the translation, but its content isn't really all that original as well. Also, Voltaire doesn't really take time to develop the story and its character, which creates an air of superficiality - as opposed to his better known Candide. But still, reading Zadig was a great pastime on a sunny day.

Εναλλακτικός τίτλος: Βόλτα με το Roller Coaster
Διττό εις τον κύβο.
Ζήτημα αν αποκωδικοποίησα το ένα δέκατο πέμπτο. Μάλλον το βιβλίο αυτό είναι ο μονόκερος που θα κυνηγάω για αρκετό καιρό.
Καμιά κριτική, μόνο λίγες άτακτες σκέψεις, τις μοιράζομαι μ’ όποιον είναι το ίδιο χαμένος με ‘μενα σχετικά με το Ζαντίγκ ή ετοιμάζεται να βουτήξει.
Φιλοσοφικό αφήγημα; Ναι καλά! Είναι πολλά περισσότερα.
Όποιος θεωρεί πως η Φιλοσοφία είναι μόνο Λογική και Περίσκεψη είναι βλάκας. Δεν εξαιρώ καθόλου τον εαυτό μου. Είναι και Συναίσθημα, πολύ συναίσθημα. Πάντα κρύβει την αγωνία για την ανθρωπότητα και την αγάπη για τον άνθρωπο. Έτσι μόνο έχει ρίζες και διαιωνίζεται, αν απέρρεε απ’ οτιδήποτε άλλο μη ειλικρινές οι σαθρές του βάσεις θα το έριχναν.
Το πρώτο που μας διδάσκει ο Ζαντίγκ και όλη η Φιλοσοφία είναι πως το βλέπω και το ακούω δε μπορούν να είναι διακοσμητικά, αισθητικά, αλλιώς και το εκφράζομαι που ακολουθεί είναι κούφιο και μονόπαντο.
Πόσο εύκολα διαβάζεται ο Ζαντίγκ; Έχει λυρική χροιά. Τι θα πει αυτό; Δεν είναι λυρικό πρώτα απ’ όλα, θυμίζει αυτή την απαράμιλλη γοητεία που γονάτιζε κάθε αγριμάκι στα πόδια της γιαγιάς. Είναι γλυκό, τρυφερό και ειλικρινές, με σκληρή ωμότητα. Σου κρύβει τα διδάγματα του και σου πετάει καρότα – κατακλείδες να κυνηγάς μπας και αποφασίσεις που τελειώνει η διακοσμητική ματιά. Έτσι νομίζω.
Α! Και αν ψάχνετε μια όμορφη ιστοριούλα, αφήστε το γνωστή ιστορία, μη σας πω δείτε καλύτερα καμιά ταινιούλα με τον Ξανθόπουλο. Θα σας τέρψει αν το επιθυμείτε, αλλά είναι ΚΡΙΜΑ να το χαλαλίσετε ΜΟΝΟ γι’ αυτό.
Για άλλη μια φορά θα επικαλεστώ το Σοπενάουερ και το Νίτσε, δε θα διαβάσετε κάτι που δεν γνωρίζετε ήδη, δεν υπάρχουν άγνωστα τι, υπάρχει όμως πάντοτε ένα διαφορετικό πως, που μπορεί αυτό ειδικά να μιλήσει μέσα μας.
Δεν έχει ηθικοπλαστικό χαρακτήρα, όσο κι αν δείχνει έτσι σε κάποια σημεία και πάλι είναι απλά η γνώμη μου.
Δεν προσπαθεί να προσηλυτίσει σε κάποιο θεό, ή σε μια εκκλησία. Ναι μιλάει για Θεία Πρόνοια, ωχ σας ξενέρωσα; Δεν πειράζει. Μιλάει παράλληλα για την ‘’ανυποστασία’’ της τύχης. Σας ξανακέρδισα; Διαβάστε το. Λίγα λέω. Και είμαι too little να μιλάω για το Βολταίρο.
Εδώ τελείωσε η κριτική τρόπον τίνα.
Ακολουθούν οι άτακτες σκέψεις κι απορίες μου ανάκατες με αποσπάσματα. Δεν είναι σοφίες, ούτε σοφιστείες. Είναι απλώς.
Ο ΣΚΥΛΟΣ ΚΑΙ ΤΟ ΑΛΟΓΟ: Η παρατήρηση του γενικού δεν είναι ίδια με την παρατήρηση του ειδικού: Ίσως στη μια περίπτωση πρέπει να συνεχίζουμε τη σιωπηλή παρατήρηση και στη δεύτερη αν ο λόγος μας μπορεί να βοηθήσει το γενικό καλό πρέπει να το κάνουμε έξω από εγωισμούς κι ανασφάλεια.
400 και 398 ουγκιές: διαχρονικό κοινωνικό σχόλιο για την τυφλότητα στη τυπολατρία;
ΟΙ ΔΙΑΞΙΦΙΣΜΟΙ ΚΑΙ ΟΙ ΑΚΡΟΑΣΕΙΣ:
Α. Αν μια απόφαση ή στάση ευνοεί τις διακρίσεις –με τις οποίες διαφωνούμε- εφ’ όσον αμφότερες οδηγούν με διαφορετικό τρόπο στην ίδια ουσιαστική ενέργεια, οφείλουμε να φτάσουμε στην ενέργεια, χρησιμοποιώντας τη συνιστώσα τους, αποφεύγοντας τη διαιώνιση μιας ανούσιας κατάστασης με το να γίνουμε υποστηρικτές της μιας ή της άλλης, εφ’ όσον δεν έχουμε τέτοιο στόχο και δεν εξυπηρετούν αυτές οι διακρίσεις η μια το ορθό κι η άλλη το λάθος τρόπο.
Β. Θέση Σοπενάουερ => Δεν πρέπει να ασχολούμαστε με τίποτα αν δεν είμαστε συγκεντρωμένοι.
Γ. Ο οργασμός χωρίς ηδονή που αφήνει το νου απερίσπαστο, δηλαδή το ζωώδες, που είναι αξιοκατάκριτο, όταν χρησιμοποιεί τις εκφράσεις του εγκεφαλικού για να δικαιολογηθεί.
Αν πρόκειται να βλάψουμε τον αθώο, κάλλιο να δοξάσουμε τον ένοχο. Πολλές πικρές σκέψεις γύρω απ’ αυτό.
‘’Όλα έχουν ένα αίτιο’’ - Βασική θέση Βολταίρου
ΜΥΤΗ: Είναι όπως λέει ο Τερζάκης, πώς να αποδεχτούμε ένα δικαστή που δεν έχει αμαρτήσει ή δεν έχει απορρίψει πειρασμό της ίδιας φύσης.
Ο ΖΗΛΟΦΘΟΝΟΣ:
1. Θέση Σοπενάουερ => όποιος δείχνει πνεύμα δε γίνεται αρεστός
2. Τίποτα δε μένει κρυφό για πάντα;

Η ΖΗΛΙΑ:

Αναγνωρίζω την ευγένεια του συναισθήματος Έρωτας που σα συναίσθημα δε μπορεί να κατηγορηθεί για οποιαδήποτε βδελυρή πράξη και δεν άρει την ιερότητα των δεσμών γάμου, φιλίας, ή αφοσίωσης σε τρίτους, ως κάτι ευγενές που μένει στην ψυχή. Ο έρωτας άλλωστε δεν ταυτίζεται με το σεξουαλικό πόθο, είναι πάθος που μπορεί να εκφραστεί και για μια φιλία, ακόμη. Γιατί τον αδικούμε προσωποποιώντας τον;
Η ΔΑΡΜΕΝΗ ΓΥΝΑΙΚΑ:
Η ζήλια ως αφροδισιακή ενίσχυση, ιδωμένη σαν παιχνίδι αποδεκτό –σιωπηρά για να μπορεί να λειτουργεί- και απ’ τους δύο, άρα και καταλύει, ή είναι ικανή να καταλύσει κάθε συμβατική συμπεριφορά, ωθώντας σε μια παρά φύσιν ευλογία. Τα πάντα για να απομακρύνουν το βάλτωμα.
Η ΣΚΛΑΒΙΑ:
Α. Η αιώνια διαμάχη σχετικά με την κούραση και την αξία ανάμεσα στη χειρωνακτική και την πνευματική εργασία: το πώς ενάντια στο γιατί. Ο Βολταίρος εκφράζει το αυτονόητο, είναι αλληλένδετα και κανένας δε μπορεί να το καταλάβει αν δε βρεθεί σε τέτοια θέση που να χρειάζονται και τα δύο.
Β. Ο οξύθυμος είναι ίδια φύση με τον ανυπόμονο, χάνει το δίκιο του ή αποκαλύπτει το άδικο του.
Η ΠΥΡΑ:
‘’λατρεύω τα κηροπήγια κι αγνοώ τον αφέντη τους που ‘ναι κι αφέντης μου’’
‘’- Ποιος από μας θα τολμήσει ν’ αλλάξει ένα νόμο που τον έχει καθαγιάσει ο χρόνος; Υπάρχει τίποτα πιο σεβαστό από μια αρχαία κατάχρηση;

Ενισχύεται μια σκέψη που γυροφέρνω εδώ και κάποιο καιρό, ότι η ματαιοδοξία είναι εκτός των άλλων και φάρμακο κατά της μοναξιάς, ιδέα που δείχνει να βρίσκει τρανό παράδειγμα στο social network.
ΤΟ ΔΕΙΠΝΟ:
Εκτιμούμε και τιμάμε διάφορα πράγματα χωρίς ποτέ να φτάνουμε στη ρίζα – ουσία - αρχή που τα πλάθει.
ΟΙ ΣΥΝΑΝΤΗΣΕΙΣ:
Η μεγαλοψυχία ανταποδίδεται στο 200%;
Η αισχρότητα στο κατρακύλισμα ενός φαινομενικά αμέμπτου ηθικής έχει να κάνει πάντοτε με το κατάλληλο αντίτιμο. Όλα μπορούν να μετακινηθούν, οι θέσεις ν’ αλλάξουν;
Εκδήλωση του έρωτα ως ταύτιση ιδεών, απόψεων ή ταυτόχρονη έκφραση κοινών τόπων δηλωτικό μεταξύ των ερωτευμένων του αθέατου και άλεκτου κόσμου τους και ικανό γνώρισμα να εγείρει τα μεγαλύτερα μίση; ‘’η βασίλισσα είχε ίδιο χρώμα πασούμια με το σκουφί μου’’.
Ο ΛΗΣΤΑΡΧΟΣ:
‘’Μου ανήκει ό,τι πατάει στη γη μου, αλλά και ό,τι βρίσκω στη γη των άλλων’’, νοοτροπία αρπακτικού.
‘’μια φορά κι έναν καιρό ήταν ένας κόκκος άμμου που παραπονιόταν επειδή περνούσε απαρατήρητος στην έρημο, σε λίγα χρόνια έγινε διαμάντι, και τώρα, είναι το ωραιότερο στολίδι στην κορόνα του βασιλιά’’, δεν παύει να ‘ναι μέρος του όλου.
Μέσα στο κακό υπάρχουν και καλά, τότε δεν είναι απόλυτο, είναι όμως κυρίως κακό κι αυτή τη φύση του δεν πρέπει να την ξεχνάμε. Θα ανταμείψει το καλό, θα σκύψει το κεφάλι, αν πιστεύε�� πως υποτάσσοντας τις χάρες του θα αποκτήσει περισσότερα, χωρίς να σημαίνει πως δε θα διστάσει να το καταστρέψει και πως το ίδιο δε θα διαφθαρεί.
Ο ΨΑΡΑΣ:
‘’Λένε πως δεν είσαι τόσο δυστυχισμένος όταν δεν είσαι μόνος. Αυτό όμως, κατά το Ζωροάστρη, δε συμβαίνει από κακεντρέχεια αλλά από ανάγκη, νιώθεις τότε να έλκεσαι από κάποιον κακότυχο, όπως απ’ τον όμοιο σου. Η χαρά ενός ευτυχισμένου ανθρώπου θα ήταν προσβολή, δυο δυστυχισμένοι όμως, είναι σαν δυο ασθενικά δεντράκια, που ακουμπώντας το ‘να στ’ άλλο, παίρνουν δύναμη ν’ αντιμετωπίσουν την καταιγίδα’’.
Όταν σου συμβεί ένα δεινό δε βλέπεις με σύνεση όσα σου ‘χουν απομείνει, βλέπεις αυτό μόνο γιγαντωμένο και χάνεις υπομονή, ψυχραιμία και σιγά σιγά τα πάντα. Λες θα ξεκινήσω απ’ την αρχή, σ’ έχει χρωματίσει όμως τόσο πολύ η απογοήτευση που στις μικρές προόδους μη κρατώντας κάποια απόσταση, βλέπεις μόνο επιδεινώσεις. Ίσως επειδή το πρώτο δεινό, αυτό που ακόμα και τώρα φαντάζει μη αναστρέψιμο, έχει γίνει η χιμαιρική σου καλημέρα.
‘’Μα πως γίνεται άρχοντα μου να ‘σαι κι εσύ τόσο δυστυχισμένος, εσύ που κάνεις το καλό’’; Νοοτροπία που μας κάνει να ζηλοφθονούμε απέναντι σ’ αυτούς που μας κάνουν κάτι καλό, πιστεύοντας ποιος ξέρει γιατί ότι η μεγαλοψυχία και η καλοσύνη είναι παντρεμένες με την ευτυχία.
‘’…αυτός ο Ορκάν αξίζει να τιμωρηθεί. Συνήθως όμως αυτοί οι άνθρωποι είναι ευνοούμενοι της τύχης’’.
Ο ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΚΟΣ:
‘’Ω αθάνατες δυνάμεις, μου δίνετε πίσω την Αστάρτη; Σε ποιο χρόνο, σε ποιους τόπους και σε ποια κατάσταση την ξαναβρίσκω’’! Όμηρος;;; ‘’Μα στων θεών, είναι όλ’ αυτά το χέρι αν θα τελέψουν’’
‘’Ο βασιλιάς ο οποίος είχε υπάρξει αρκετά έντιμος μέχρι τη στιγμή που θέλησε να με δηλητηριάσει και να με στραγγαλίσει, τώρα έμοιαζε να ‘χει πνίξει τις αξίες του μέσα στον υπέρμετρο έρωτα που ένιωθε για την ωραία ιδιότροπη’’. Όταν ο έρωτας επινοείται και δε γεννιέται, σαν φύλακας της εξαχρείωσης μας και κυνηγός των καλών μας αξιών ως τον Άδη.
‘’η στιγμή που ξαναβρίσκουμε κάποιον και η στιγμή που τον αποχωριζόμαστε, αποτελούν τους δυο μεγαλύτερους σταθμούς στη ζωή’’
‘’Ο Ζαντίγκ αγαπούσε τη βασίλισσα όσο ακριβώς ορκιζόταν και η βασίλισσα αγαπούσε το Ζαντίγκ περισσότερο απ’ ό,τι του ομολογούσε’’. Δηλωτικό της στάσης άντρα και γυναίκας; Ακόμη και στο γενικό πλαίσιο δεν εκφράζει κάτι κακό, άλλωστε η σοφία του άλλου φύλου σε ορισμένα ζητήματα, είναι αυταπόδεικτη, γεγονός που επισήμανε άκομψα μεν και ο Σοπενάουερ που κατηγορήθηκε λόγω του ιδιόρρυθμου δοκιμίου του ως μισογύνης.
‘’Μάθετε λοιπόν πως δεν υπάρχουν στη φύση βασιλίσκοι, πως μπορούμε να νιώθουμε καλά με την εγκράτεια και την άσκηση και πως η τέχνη της συνύπαρξης της ασωτίας με την υγεία είναι μια τέχνη τόσο χιμαιρική όσο και η φιλοσοφική λίθος, η δικανική αστρολογία και η θεολογία των μάγων’’. Παν μέτρον άριστον. Νους υγιής εν σώματι υγιή. Τα αγαθά κόποις κτώνται. Επιλογή και συνέπειες.
‘’…όταν σ’ αγαπά μια ωραία γυναίκα’’. Τι εννοεί;;; Τι αντιπροσωπεύει; Την αρετή; Ποια αρετή; Την εγκράτεια; Πειθαρχία; Υπομονή; Σύνεση;
ΟΙ ΑΓΩΝΕΣ:
‘’Ο πρώτος ήταν υπερβολικά ματαιόδοξος, όχι και τόσο θαρραλέος, ιδιαίτερα αδέξιος και χωρίς διόλου πνεύμα. Οι υπηρέτες του τον είχαν πείσει πως ένας άντρας σαν κι αυτόν έπρεπε να είναι βασιλιάς κι εκείνος τους είχε απαντήσει: << Ένας άντρας σαν κι εμένα πρέπει να βασιλεύει>>’’ Αυτή η απάντηση στη βάση της όμως δεν είναι κουτή, άλλο το είναι κι άλλο το πράττειν.
Ο εφησυχασμός είναι για τους νεκρούς και τους δίκαιους. Οι πονηροί δεν κοιμούνται ποτέ λόγω του ακόρεστου, ή της ανάγκης να θριαμβεύσουν διά του εύκολου δρόμου.
Ο ΕΡΗΜΙΤΗΣ:
‘’…αυτός ο λαμπρός άντρας που υποδέχεται τους ξένους μονάχα από ματαιοδοξία θα γίνει πιο συνετός, ο φιλάργυρος θα μάθει ν’ ασκεί τη φιλοξενία’’. Οτιδήποτε κι αν εξυπηρετείται διαμέσου της ματαιοδοξίας δεν καθαγιάζεται: κι αν φέρνει χαρές στους λήπτες, μαραίνει το δότη.
Η φιλαργυρία μπορεί να καταπολεμηθεί με τη γενναιοδωρία; Μόνιμα; Συνολικά απέναντι στους ανθρώπους ή μόνο απέναντι στους γενναιόδωρους;
‘’οι άνθρωποι δε δικαιούνται να κρίνουν ένα όλον που μόνο ένα μικρό του μέρος αντιλαμβάνονται’’
‘’όλα είναι επικίνδυνα και όλα αναγκαία’’ Παν μέτρον άριστον.
‘’Γιατί ο άνθρωπος δε μπορεί να χαρίσει ο ίδιος στον εαυτό του ούτε αισθήσεις, ούτε σκέψεις – όλα του είναι δοσμένα, όμως ο πόνος και η ηδονή του έρχονται απ’ αλλού, όπως και η ίδια του η ύπαρξη’’. Είμαστε ό,τι είμαστε απ’ το Θεό και μαζί με τους άλλους και χάρη σ’ εκείνους και για ‘κεινους; Συντροφικότητα;
‘’Δόξα τω Θεώ, το σπίτι του αγαπητού μου οικοδεσπότη καταστράφηκε συθέμελα! Τι ευτυχισμένος άνθρωπος’’. Μια απ’ τις βάσεις του Κόκκινο και μαύρο, στην τελειωτική κατάπτωση του Ζυλιέν και στην παραίτηση απ’ τη Μαστθίλδη & Θέσεις Σοπενάουερ: αρχές αφορώσες τη συμπεριφορά απέναντι στον εαυτό μας => (α) τα δεινά είναι αυτά που είναι και δεν είναι περισσότερα, (β) για την ανθρώπινη ευτυχία απαραίτητη είναι η δραστηριότητα, το να μοχθεί, να υπερβαίνει αντιστάσεις, φυσική ανάγκη. Η σταθερότητα της παντελούς αυτάρκειας μιας μόνιμης απόλαυσης είναι αφόρητη. Μόνο η υπέρβαση εμποδίων συνιστά την πλήρη απόλαυση.
‘’- Δεν καταλαβαίνω γιατί είναι ανάγκη να υπάρχουν κρίματα και δυστυχίες, κι οι δυστυχίες να πέφτουν στους καλούς ανθρώπους.

Ο ΧΟΡΟΣ:
Ο έντιμος άνθρωπος δε φοβάται να φερθεί απροσποίητα, δεν έχει κρυφά βάρη, τουλάχιστον όχι σχετικά με την πηγή της εντιμότητας του.
ΤΑ ΓΑΛΑΖΙΑ ΜΑΤΙΑ:

Ζήτημα αν αποκωδικοποίησα το ένα δέκατο πέμπτο. Μάλλον το βιβλίο αυτό είναι ο μονόκερος που θα κυνηγάω για αρκετό καιρό.
Καμιά κριτική, μόνο λίγες άτακτες σκέψεις, τις μοιράζομαι μ’ όποιον είναι το ίδιο χαμένος με ‘μενα σχετικά με το Ζαντίγκ ή ετοιμάζεται να βουτήξει.
Φιλοσοφικό αφήγημα; Ναι καλά! Είναι πολλά περισσότερα.
Όποιος θεωρεί πως η Φιλοσοφία είναι μόνο Λογική και Περίσκεψη είναι βλάκας. Δεν εξαιρώ καθόλου τον εαυτό μου. Είναι και Συναίσθημα, πολύ συναίσθημα. Πάντα κρύβει την αγωνία για την ανθρωπότητα και την αγάπη για τον άνθρωπο. Έτσι μόνο έχει ρίζες και διαιωνίζεται, αν απέρρεε απ’ οτιδήποτε άλλο μη ειλικρινές οι σαθρές του βάσεις θα το έριχναν.
Το πρώτο που μας διδάσκει ο Ζαντίγκ και όλη η Φιλοσοφία είναι πως το βλέπω και το ακούω δε μπορούν να είναι διακοσμητικά, αισθητικά, αλλιώς και το εκφράζομαι που ακολουθεί είναι κούφιο και μονόπαντο.
Πόσο εύκολα διαβάζεται ο Ζαντίγκ; Έχει λυρική χροιά. Τι θα πει αυτό; Δεν είναι λυρικό πρώτα απ’ όλα, θυμίζει αυτή την απαράμιλλη γοητεία που γονάτιζε κάθε αγριμάκι στα πόδια της γιαγιάς. Είναι γλυκό, τρυφερό και ειλικρινές, με σκληρή ωμότητα. Σου κρύβει τα διδάγματα του και σου πετάει καρότα – κατακλείδες να κυνηγάς μπας και αποφασίσεις που τελειώνει η διακοσμητική ματιά. Έτσι νομίζω.
Α! Και αν ψάχνετε μια όμορφη ιστοριούλα, αφήστε το γνωστή ιστορία, μη σας πω δείτε καλύτερα καμιά ταινιούλα με τον Ξανθόπουλο. Θα σας τέρψει αν το επιθυμείτε, αλλά είναι ΚΡΙΜΑ να το χαλαλίσετε ΜΟΝΟ γι’ αυτό.
Για άλλη μια φορά θα επικαλεστώ το Σοπενάουερ και το Νίτσε, δε θα διαβάσετε κάτι που δεν γνωρίζετε ήδη, δεν υπάρχουν άγνωστα τι, υπάρχει όμως πάντοτε ένα διαφορετικό πως, που μπορεί αυτό ειδικά να μιλήσει μέσα μας.
Δεν έχει ηθικοπλαστικό χαρακτήρα, όσο κι αν δείχνει έτσι σε κάποια σημεία και πάλι είναι απλά η γνώμη μου.
Δεν προσπαθεί να προσηλυτίσει σε κάποιο θεό, ή σε μια εκκλησία. Ναι μιλάει για Θεία Πρόνοια, ωχ σας ξενέρωσα; Δεν πειράζει. Μιλάει παράλληλα για την ‘’ανυποστασία’’ της τύχης. Σας ξανακέρδισα; Διαβάστε το. Λίγα λέω. Και είμαι too little να μιλάω για το Βολταίρο.
Εδώ τελείωσε η κριτική τρόπον τίνα.
Ακολουθούν οι άτακτες σκέψεις κι απορίες μου ανάκατες με αποσπάσματα. Δεν είναι σοφίες, ούτε σοφιστείες. Είναι απλώς.
Ο ΣΚΥΛΟΣ ΚΑΙ ΤΟ ΑΛΟΓΟ: Η παρατήρηση του γενικού δεν είναι ίδια με την παρατήρηση του ειδικού: Ίσως στη μια περίπτωση πρέπει να συνεχίζουμε τη σιωπηλή παρατήρηση και στη δεύτερη αν ο λόγος μας μπορεί να βοηθήσει το γενικό καλό πρέπει να το κάνουμε έξω από εγωισμούς κι ανασφάλεια.
400 και 398 ουγκιές: διαχρονικό κοινωνικό σχόλιο για την τυφλότητα στη τυπολατρία;
ΟΙ ΔΙΑΞΙΦΙΣΜΟΙ ΚΑΙ ΟΙ ΑΚΡΟΑΣΕΙΣ:
Α. Αν μια απόφαση ή στάση ευνοεί τις διακρίσεις –με τις οποίες διαφωνούμε- εφ’ όσον αμφότερες οδηγούν με διαφορετικό τρόπο στην ίδια ουσιαστική ενέργεια, οφείλουμε να φτάσουμε στην ενέργεια, χρησιμοποιώντας τη συνιστώσα τους, αποφεύγοντας τη διαιώνιση μιας ανούσιας κατάστασης με το να γίνουμε υποστηρικτές της μιας ή της άλλης, εφ’ όσον δεν έχουμε τέτοιο στόχο και δεν εξυπηρετούν αυτές οι διακρίσεις η μια το ορθό κι η άλλη το λάθος τρόπο.
Β. Θέση Σοπενάουερ => Δεν πρέπει να ασχολούμαστε με τίποτα αν δεν είμαστε συγκεντρωμένοι.
Γ. Ο οργασμός χωρίς ηδονή που αφήνει το νου απερίσπαστο, δηλαδή το ζωώδες, που είναι αξιοκατάκριτο, όταν χρησιμοποιεί τις εκφράσεις του εγκεφαλικού για να δικαιολογηθεί.
Αν πρόκειται να βλάψουμε τον αθώο, κάλλιο να δοξάσουμε τον ένοχο. Πολλές πικρές σκέψεις γύρω απ’ αυτό.
‘’Όλα έχουν ένα αίτιο’’ - Βασική θέση Βολταίρου
ΜΥΤΗ: Είναι όπως λέει ο Τερζάκης, πώς να αποδεχτούμε ένα δικαστή που δεν έχει αμαρτήσει ή δεν έχει απορρίψει πειρασμό της ίδιας φύσης.
Ο ΖΗΛΟΦΘΟΝΟΣ:
1. Θέση Σοπενάουερ => όποιος δείχνει πνεύμα δε γίνεται αρεστός

Ο ΥΠΟΥΡΓΟΣ:
Αφού επιμένουμε να κρίνουμε ή αφού δε μπορούμε να το αποφύγουμε, ενώ δεν ξέρουμε παρά ελάχιστα, ας προσπαθούμε να κρίνουμε για το Είναι κι όχι για το Φαίνεσθαι.

Η ΖΗΛΙΑ:

Αναγνωρίζω την ευγένεια του συναισθήματος Έρωτας που σα συναίσθημα δε μπορεί να κατηγορηθεί για οποιαδήποτε βδελυρή πράξη και δεν άρει την ιερότητα των δεσμών γάμου, φιλίας, ή αφοσίωσης σε τρίτους, ως κάτι ευγενές που μένει στην ψυχή. Ο έρωτας άλλωστε δεν ταυτίζεται με το σεξουαλικό πόθο, είναι πάθος που μπορεί να εκφραστεί και για μια φιλία, ακόμη. Γιατί τον αδικούμε προσωποποιώντας τον;
Η ΔΑΡΜΕΝΗ ΓΥΝΑΙΚΑ:
Η ζήλια ως αφροδισιακή ενίσχυση, ιδωμένη σαν παιχνίδι αποδεκτό –σιωπηρά για να μπορεί να λειτουργεί- και απ’ τους δύο, άρα και καταλύει, ή είναι ικανή να καταλύσει κάθε συμβατική συμπεριφορά, ωθώντας σε μια παρά φύσιν ευλογία. Τα πάντα για να απομακρύνουν το βάλτωμα.
Η ΣΚΛΑΒΙΑ:
Α. Η αιώνια διαμάχη σχετικά με την κούραση και την αξία ανάμεσα στη χειρωνακτική και την πνευματική εργασία: το πώς ενάντια στο γιατί. Ο Βολταίρος εκφράζει το αυτονόητο, είναι αλληλένδετα και κανένας δε μπορεί να το καταλάβει αν δε βρεθεί σε τέτοια θέση που να χρειάζονται και τα δύο.

Η ΠΥΡΑ:

Ενισχύεται μια σκέψη που γυροφέρνω εδώ και κάποιο καιρό, ότι η ματαιοδοξία είναι εκτός των άλλων και φάρμακο κατά της μοναξιάς, ιδέα που δείχνει να βρίσκει τρανό παράδειγμα στο social network.
ΤΟ ΔΕΙΠΝΟ:
Εκτιμούμε και τιμάμε διάφορα πράγματα χωρίς ποτέ να φτάνουμε στη ρίζα – ουσία - αρχή που τα πλάθει.
ΟΙ ΣΥΝΑΝΤΗΣΕΙΣ:
Η μεγαλοψυχία ανταποδίδεται στο 200%;
Η αισχρότητα στο κατρακύλισμα ενός φαινομενικά αμέμπτου ηθικής έχει να κάνει πάντοτε με το κατάλληλο αντίτιμο. Όλα μπορούν να μετακινηθούν, οι θέσεις ν’ αλλάξουν;
Εκδήλωση του έρωτα ως ταύτιση ιδεών, απόψεων ή ταυτόχρονη έκφραση κοινών τόπων δηλωτικό μεταξύ των ερωτευμένων του αθέατου και άλεκτου κόσμου τους και ικανό γνώρισμα να εγείρει τα μεγαλύτερα μίση; ‘’η βασίλισσα είχε ίδιο χρώμα πασούμια με το σκουφί μου’’.
Ο ΛΗΣΤΑΡΧΟΣ:

Όταν σου συμβεί ένα δεινό δε βλέπεις με σύνεση όσα σου ‘χουν απομείνει, βλέπεις αυτό μόνο γιγαντωμένο και χάνεις υπομονή, ψυχραιμία και σιγά σιγά τα πάντα. Ο ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΚΟΣ:

ΟΙ ΑΓΩΝΕΣ:

كنت أبحث عن أشهر روايات فولتير وهي كانديد، فلم أجدها .. ووجدت زديج مكانها بترجمة طه حسين وقد سماها القدر: قصة شرقية .. فقرأتها
رواية بدون حبكة .. فهي عبارة عن 21 فصلا قصيرا .. والفصل صفحتين ثلاثة .. هدفها بث حكم ومواعظ فولتير بطريقة مباشرة، ورأيه في القدر على لسان بطل الرواية (زديج) الذي يعيش في بابل .. وهو بطل بمعنى الكلمة: شجاع، كريم، فيلسوف، صادق، عاشق، صاحب صاحبه، عادل ... الخ
وقد اقتطفت رأي طه حسين في الرواية الذي ذكره في المقدمة: "في القصة عرض وحل لمشكلة القدر على نحو ما تصوره الفلاسفة منذ أقدم العصور، وهو هذا الحل الذي لا يحل شيئا، والذي يلخص في أن الإنسان أقصر عقلا وأكل ذهنا من أن يفهم حكمة الخالق الذي أبدع العالم ووضع له ما يدبره من القوانين. فما عليه الا أن يكد ويجد ويعمل الخير ما وسعه أن يعمل الخير، ويجتنب الشر ما أتيح له أن يجتنب الشر، ولا عليه بعد ذلك أن تسره الأيام أو تسوءه، وأن تسخطه الأحداث أو ترضيه"
ملاحظة غريبة: طه الحسين قال أنه قرأ القصة عشر مرات وأنه سيظل يقرأها ويقرأها، الغريب أنها قصة عادية أو فوق المتوسط بقليل .. وأنا أرجح هذا الولع بالقصة لسبب من ثلاثة، أو مزيج منهم:
أ- أنه قرأها أثناء دراسته في فرنسا وهو يعد الدكتوراة .. أعني أنه كان "واجب" عليه قراءتها عدة مرات فحبها لكثرة تكرارها ليس إلا
ب- انبهاره الشديد بالغرب وبفرنسا جعله يهيم بكل ما هو فرنسي فما بالك بفيلسوف فرنسا الأول فولتير .. فالمؤكد أن كل ما يكتبه رائع .. حتى ولو كان غير ذلك
جـ- الرواية فعلا رائعة، وأنا الذي لم استطع رؤية الروعة لسبب أو اخر .. ولا أعتقد أن هذا هو السبب

This is a short, philosophical novel about Zadig, a fictional character of ancient Babylonia. Zadig reminds me of Don Quixote in the sense that he is very virtuous, but he is beset with every misfortune you can imagine. Regardless of his good intentions, Zadig finds trouble at every turn, even to the extent of imprisonment and slavery.
Zadig was first published in the mid 18th century, and not as well known as Candide, it is a very good philosophical work and well worth reading.

Zadig, a philosopher in ancient Babylonia, goes through numerous trials, proves his wisdom and wins happiness. I know it's categorized as a philosophical novel, but it felt more like an adventure novel with a romantic subplot and a little philosophy snuck in.

نبذة عن الكاتب: فرانسوا ماري آروويه ويُعرف باسم شهرته فولتير (21 نوفمبر 1694 – 30 مايو 1778) هو كاتب وفيلسوف فرنسي عـاش خلال عصر التنوير. عُرف بنقده الساخر، وذاع صيته بسبب سخريته الفلسفية الطريفة ودفاعه عن الحريات المدنية خاصة حرية العقيدة والمساواة وكرامة الإنسان.
كان فولتير كاتباً غزير الإنتاج قام بكتابة أعمال في كل الأشكال الأدبية تقريباً؛ فقد كتب المسرحيات والشعر والروايات والمقالات والأعمال التاريخية والعلمية وأكثر من عشرين ألفًا من الخطابات، وكذلك أكثر من ألفين من الكتب والمنشورات. من أشهر آثاره: "رسائل فلسفية" (1734)، و"زاديغ" أو "صادق" (1747) وقد نقلها إلى العربية طه حسين، تحت اسم "القَدَر"، و"كانديد" (أو الساذج) (1759)، و "المعجم الفلسفي" (1764).
وقد كان فولتير مدافعاً صريحاً عن الإصلاح الاجتماعي على الرغم من وجود قوانين الرقابة الصارمة والعقوبات القاسية التي كان يتم تطبيقها على كل من يقوم بخرق هذه القوانين. وباعتباره ممن برعوا في فن المجادلة والمناظرة الهجائية، فقد كان دائماً ما يحسن استغلال أعماله لانتقاد دوغمائيات الكنيسة الكاثوليكية والمؤسسات الاجتماعية الفرنسية الموجودة في عصره.
وكان فولتير واحداً من العديد من الشخصيات البارزة في عصر التنوير (إلى جانب كل من مونتسكيو وجون لوك وتوماس هوبز وجان جاك روسو) حيث تركت أعماله وأفكاره بصمتها الواضحة على مفكرين مهمين تنتمي أفكارهم للثورة الأمريكية والثورة الفرنسية.

الموضوع: يتحدث الكتاب عن الشاب البابلي زديج او كما اسماه طه حسين "صادق" الذي يتحلى بالحكمة والعدالة وحب الخير والعطاء ومحنك بكل تصرفاته وقراراته واحكامه.. وفي كل قصة نجد عبرة ورسالة اراد ڤولتير ايصالها لنا إما تخص الدين او السياسة او الحياة الاجتماعية او الظلم او الغرور او الانانية أو مسألة الخير والشر او القدر او السلطة وغيرها وخلف عناوين القصص اسقاطات تقع على المجتمع الفرنسي والاوربي وليس الشرقي فحسب وان كان تأثر الكاتب بالثقافة الشرقية وهذا ما التمسناه من كتابته هذا الاصدار الا انه استخدمه كقناع ليرمي بسهامه وانتقاداته لمجتمعه الغربي ولكن كما هو حال واقعنا من ينتقد سياسة معينة في موطنه او وزارة او ادارة جهات معينة ومواقع حساسة يكون رهينة للعقاب والسجن والقتل خصوصاً في بعض الحقبات الزمانية كالتي كتب فيها ڤولتير اصداره، وبحال الواقع المر لا يجد الشخص للتعبير عن حرية رايه وانتقاداته سوى التخفي خلف رموز واقنعة على القارئ تفكيكها واسقاطها على الواقع الذي يعيشه الكاتب انذاك ثم الواقع الذي يعيشه هو وهذا ما استخدمه ڤولتير بكتاباته حفاظاً على نفسه، وعلينا كقرّاء ان نظلق العنان لنظرتنا البعيدة والعميقة في هذه السطور.

القصص عادت بنا الى الف ليلة وليلة التي تأثر بها الكاتب كثيراً وكذلك اخذتني الى حكايات اعقل المجانين بهلول فحنكته وحكمته وعبقريته وتدبيره وفصله ببعض القضايا والحلول التي يجدها حتى وان كان الضرر الواقع عليه اكثر من النفع الا انه يفصل بالامور بكل عدل ويبدد الظلم ويثبت حق المظلوم مهما كلفه الامر هو نفسه المنهاج الذي سار عليه زديج وهذا ماجعلني اتذكر بهلول اعقل المجانين الذي يعود دوماً للحيلة ودهاء ذكائه وحكمته ليثبت مايريد اثباته.

الكثير من القصص القرآنية احتوى عليها هذا الاصدار كقصص الخير والشر وانعكاسهم الظاهر والباطن والتي تجعلنا نعود لاستذكار بعض سور القرآن وآياته فالخير له وجهان كما للشر وجهان فما يكون خيرٌ لدي ربما يكون شرٌ لغيري والعكس صحيح وبعض القصص ذكرتني بالمثل القائل رب ضارة نافعة ووجدته بالكثير من القصص ايضاً، وكذلك قصة زديج مع الناسك التي اعادتني لسورة الكهف للآيات التي تروي لنا قصة النبي موسى مع الخضر وبعض القصص من حياة الامام علي والكثير من القصص التي لم تكن غريبة عليَّ اثناء قرائتها.

الكتاب يجعلك تعود للذة القرائية المتأنيه رغم عدد صفحاته القليلة إلا انه يستغرق وقت واكثر من يوم لانهائه لان ماجاء بين سطوره رائعة من روائع الادب الساخر والواقعي الذي يحاكي مجتمعاتنا وحياتنا ويحاكي الانظمة والسلطة والدين اعجبتني التعرية التي قام بها ڤولتير مع الكهنة ازال عنهم قناع التدين وثوب الاخلاق حين ارسل لهم الشيطان على صورة امرأة وأغرتهم حتى وقعوا بشراكها وانقذت زديج وابهرني تصويره هذا الواقع الذي وللاسف استغل الكثيرين الدين بإرتداء الثوب الجليل واللسان الحكيم الذي يغري الكثيرين ولكن في الخفاء ماهم الا خواء في الجانب الديني وماهم عليه ماهو الا مظهر لاجل خدمة مصالحهم الشخصية لاغير وغيرها من القضايا التي وجدت بطيات هذا الكتاب الجميل.

مهما كتبت في هذا الاصدار لن تنتهي مراجعتي فالكتاب جداً جداً جميل ويستحق القراءة اكثر من مرة لاكتشاف كنوزه الرائعة ابدع ڤولتير وطه حسين في هذا الاصدار وكم اعطاني الحماس لقراءة اصداراته الاخرى.

كان هذا الكتاب ضمن تحدي قراءة 12 ساعة مع اعضاء مبادرة القرّاء البحرينيين ولكنني لم أنهيه بنفس الفترة لان الكتاب عميق ويحتاج للتركيز وتفكيك رموزه والبحث عن معلومات دفينة بين السطور.. مقدمة طه حسين لحالها كانت اصدار برمته فترجمته كانت جميلة وعميقة جداً ولمساته الادبية رائعة فمثل هذه الترجمات انقرضت في زمننا هذا، قليل هم من تكون لهم ترجمات بهذا العمق والجمال.

الكتاب مليء بالاقتباسات العميقة والجميلة والفلسفية وسأكتفي بذكر البعض منها.

•ملاحظة: يحدث بعض الاحيان تشابه بيننا وبين بعضنا في التقييمات ولكنه بلا شك غير مقصود لان لكل منا رايه وذائقته واسلوبه ونظرته للاحداث وان حدث تشابهه فيما بيننا فهو محض صدفة لاغير ولاتعتمد في خيارك على ذائقة الاخرين فكل ذائقة تختلف بالتأكيد فيما بيننا.

This novella tells of the adventures and misfortunes that befall its protagonist Zadig a
Babylonian man, who is subjected to the often-cruel whims of fate. One thing that I found interesting was that first published in 1747 in the first chapter The Blind Eye Zadig describes a dog and a horse he has never seen very accurately due to his inferences about the tracks left on the ground. The practice of making careful observations with great attention to detail later influenced modern detective fiction which would emerge in the early nineteenth century a hundred years later with Edgar Allan Poe often being cited as an important figure in the creation of this detective genre with his Detective C. Auguste Dupin trilogy. Dupin made his first appearance in Poe's 1841 short story The Murders in the Rue Morgue, widely considered the first detective fiction story. He reappears in The Mystery of Marie Rogêt (1842) and The Purloined Letter (1844).

Masalsı anlatımı, iğneleyici üslubu ve kısa ama öz karakter anlatımlarıyla yine güzel bir Voltaire eseri. Es geçilmemeli kesinlikle.

Cuốn này gồm 2 truyện chính, một về Zadig và một về Amabed. Ngoài 2 truyện này còn có các truyện ngắn khác. Nhìn chung, Voltaire châm biếm hay và nhiều khi khiến mình không nhịn được cười :))) Tuy nhiên khả năng kể chuyện của ông, theo như mình cảm nhận được thì có lẽ không hẳn xuất sắc lắm. Truyện Zadig và các truyện ngắn còn lại đem đến cảm giác giản dị thái quá.
Thế nhưng có một ngoại lệ. Truyện Amabed gây cho mình nhiều thích thú. Ngôn từ trong đây trí tuệ và sắc sảo hơn hẳn. Đọc các đoạn chế giễu Kito giáo và bọn nắm quyền tôn giáo trong truyện này mình thấy rất đắc ý.
Dạng thức có thể là một yếu tố gây khác biệt. Cụ thể, truyện Amabed được viết dưới dạng thư từ qua lại. Có lẽ nhờ dạng này mà các nhân vật thoải mái bộc lộ quan sát và đánh giá hơn chăng? Bên cạnh đó, có thể còn một nguyên nhân khác. Truyện này hay vì Voltaire đã chọn viết kỹ càng hơn. Có thể thấy tư tưởng được Voltaire đưa vào trong các lá thư trực tiếp hơn, thường xuyên hơn và chúng được biện hộ đầy đủ hơn.
Lúc này mình có suy nghĩ rằng Voltaire có đầy đủ khả năng để viết một cuốn truyện chặt chẽ và chi tiết. Ông chỉ đơn giản quá hài hước (và lười) để làm vậy =))) Bằng chứng là dù đã tốn kha khá mực để viết Amabed, ông cũng không thèm kết thúc truyện này luôn :v

There are not many differences between this book and the previous one I read, Candide. so I'm not sure what exactly I can add. It is the story of a very wise man who is called to offer what he can in a world that is not very wise and does not appreciate such things, something that leads him to many entanglements and in the end makes him more pragmatic. Through it, similar conclusions are drawn about human nature and man's inability to improve drastically, but the idea remains that man has potential. Another interesting and entertaining book that can make the reader think.
Δεν υπάρχουν πολλές διαφορές σε αυτό το βιβλίο με το προηγούμενο που διάβασα, το, για αυτό δεν είμαι σίγουρος τι ακριβώς μπορώ να προσθέσω. Πρόκειται για την ιστορία ενός πολύ σοφού ανθρώπου που καλείται να προσφέρει ότι μπορεί σε έναν κόσμο που δεν είναι ιδιαίτερα σοφός και δεν εκτιμάει τέτοια πράγματα, κάτι που τον οδηγεί σε πολλά μπλεξίματα και τον κάνει στο τέλος περισσότερο πραγματιστή. Μέσα από αυτήν προκύπτουν ανάλογα συμπεράσματα για την ανθρώπινη φύση και την αδυναμία του ανθρώπου να βελτιωθεί δραστικά αλλά παραμένει η ιδέα ότι ο άνθρωπος έχει δυνατότητες. Ένα ακόμα ενδιαφέρον και διασκεδαστικό βιβλίο που μπορεί να βάλει τον αναγνώστη σε σκέψη.

يقول طه حسين أن هذه رواية صيفية يعني تقرأ للتسلية ولا أدري إن كان السبب إنني قرأتها في طليعة فصل الشتاء عندن�� أم ماذا
أو لعل كانديد هي السبب أعني أن روايتين بنفس الأسلوب أمر فاق احتمالي
هذا الأسلوب الذي يخفي خلفه النصيحة أو ربما لأن فولتير كان يكتب عن عالم شرقي في حين أنه رجل ينتمي للغرب
لا أدري حقيقة إلا إنني لم استطع أن أهضم هذه الرواية وتجرعتها كالدواء المر
لا أريد أن أقرأ شيئا عن فولتير لثلاثة شهور على الأقل :(

رواية زديج أو القدر، للكاتب الفرنسي الذي عاش في القرن الثامن عشر فولتير، بتعريب الدكتور الأديب طه حسين، وهذا يضفي على الرواية طابعاً إبداعياً جميلاً، ويشجع لقراءتها للغة العميد الأخاذة.
يتحدث فيها عن شاب حكيم بلغ فيه الرشد والنباهة ما بلغا، يقدم يد المساعدة للكل، ويتبوأ مراكز عليا في قلوب الناس أو الأمراء أو الحكام من الجنسين، وهذا بالطبع يجعل من وجود الحسودين والحقودين أمراً لا بد منه، لكن المشكلة أن كل سعادة تنقلب في نهايتها إلى شقاء، وكل أمر لمصلحته ينقلب ضده، وهكذا دواليك، فسعاداته مؤقتة سرعان ما تنقلب إلى تعاسات. وكلما ارتقى مراتب هوى، حتى إنه أصبح يظن كل الظن أن الأشرار هم أصحاب الهناءة.
في واحد وعشرين فصلاً، تتقلب حياة زديج، يسافر عبر الأمصار العربية، وهنا فولتير يصير قارئاً عربياً، فصاغ قصة صارت في زمن علي بن أبي طالب على ما أظن، وصاغ من الأديان قصة الخضر وموسى بطريقته، وأضافها إلى هذه الرواية تحت حكاية زديج.
يتأثر فولتير كثيراً بفلسفة زرادتشت الذي عاش قبل الميلاد بخمسمائة أو ستمائة عام، ويقتبس منه كثيراً في روايته، أما عن فلسفته في القدر فكما قال طه حسين: حلاً لا يحل شيئاً.

زديج من الكتب اللي استمتعت بكل لحظة منها و كل صفحة من صفحاتها. القصة مقسمة لفصول و كل فصل تستخلص من نهايته عبرة أو حكمة . فولتير أبدع في إيصال الحكم و العبر بإيجاز رائع. ترجمة طه حسين عشرة من عشرة. لما فتحت الكتاب كنت ناسي إنه المترجم و لما قرأت مقدمة المترجم علطول عرفت إنه هو المترجم من أسلوبه و من حبه "للمستشرقين" =).
يتضح لي أن بعض قصص فصول الكتاب بما فيها الحكمة المراد إيصالها هي في الواقع مستعارة من قصص معروفة و ممحورة قليلا لتتماشى مع سياق القصة. حتى إن هناك فصول حكمها مستعارة من قصص القرآن بشكل جلي.
بشكل عام قصة جميلة وتعيشك أجواء ألف ليلة و ليلة. أحببتها و هي ضمن المفضلة لدي.

เรื่องนี้ อ่านเพลิน ตลก เต็มไปด้วยแนวคิดที่เรียบง่ายและได้ผล
ซาดิก เป็นชายหนุ่มผู้มีสติปัญญา เก่งกล้าในการต่อสู้ และรูปงาม แต่โชคชะตาทำให้ชีวิตเขาขึ้นๆ ลงๆ เริ่มตั้งแต่โดนคู่หมั้นทิ้ง จากนั้น เกือบโดนประหาร, เป็นอัครมหาเสนาบดี, เป็นทาส และอื่นๆ อีกมากมาย
ผมอ่านแล้วไม่รู้สึกเวทนาในชะตาของเขาแม้แต่น้อย แต่รู้สึกตลกกับถ้อยคำประชดชีวิต และเพลิดเพลินไปกับการใช้แนวคิดที่เรียบง่ายแก้ปัญหาต่างๆ ทั้งของเขาเองและผู้อื่น เช่น วิธีช่วยให้หญิงหม้ายชาวอาหรับทั้งหลายไม่ต้องเผาตัวตายตามสามี
และที่ผมชอบมาก คือ การยุติข้อพิพาทเรื่องทิศทางการสวด ระหว่าง นักบวชชุดขาวที่ห้ามสวดโดยหันหน้าทางตะวันออกในฤดูหนาว กับ นักบวชชุดดำที่ห้ามสวดโดยหันหน้าทางตะวันตกในฤดูร้อน (ผมต้องอ่านข้อพิพาทซ้ำอีกครั้ง จึงจะรู้ว่าต้นเหตุของปัญหามันอยู่ที่ไหน)
ส่วนที่ชอบที่สุด คือ ปริศนาคำทาย 2 ข้อ ซึ่งผู้เข้าร่วมประลองเพื่อครอบครองกรุงบาบิโลนจะต้องตอบให้ได้ คำตอบนั้นเรียบง่ายและลึกซึ้ง (ผมพยายามคิดคำตอบก่อนอ่านเฉลย และตอบผิดทั้ง 2 ข้อ)

This is an excellent tale, echoing the manner of the Arabian Nights, filled with amusing episodes and light philosophical insights. I may be ambivalent about the story’s moral, but the character of the eponymous protagonist is heroic in his quests and honest in his struggle to meet his outrageous challenges in a world filled with pain and frustration, not least being the betrayals and stupidities of his fellow men . . . all the while trying to puzzle out the nature of Fate. Its inspiration never flags.
It is worth mentioning the full title of the edition I read: Zadig, or Fate. Voltaire’s Deism shows in a revelation towards the end, with an angel offering the secret why a world with so much suffering exists. Very interesting. Today’s besotted youngsters might be amused to learn that Diversity Is a Sign not of Our Strength . . . but of the Creator’s.
This is not a novel. Voltaire tells his story in the manner of ancient tall tales, not in the modern novelistic style with its characteristic attention to moment, aiming to induce the reader into the soul of the protagonist, whether hero, victim or anti-hero. There is no “interiority” here. Do not read it expecting anything like a modern thriller or popular novel, and most especially a classic novel such as Silas Marner and Fathers and Sons. This is a droll tale in the olden style, but with Voltaire’s wit woven in to leaven the lump.
I highly recommend Zadig. Every literate person should be familiar with this form of fiction. I believe it would properly be called an “anatomy,” to use the terminology of Northrop Frye, taken from Robert Burton. The ancient term is Menippean satire. Some of my favorite writers engage in this genre: Lucian, Denis Diderot, Aldous Huxley, and James Branch Cabell. But I also acknowledge and honor the more popular form of the novel, now standard. Yet, as I grow old, and soak up our civilization’s scattered stores of wisdom — wringing them out, periodically, in the course of my many follies and foibles — I find my taste for reveling in the arts of feeling, of streams of consciousness and flows of tropisms, wane.
What waxes, instead, are the dazzling philosophical perspectives of Lucian and Cabell. And Voltaire.

Bu eşsiz yapıta ilk baktığımızda Sadık adındaki dopdulu bir karakterin hayatı boyunca sonsuz mutluluk arayışına odaklandığına ve kitap boyunca çıktığı yolculuklarda başına gelenleri kabullenerek hiçbir şey olmamışçasına yolculuklarına devam etmesinin ele alındığı görülüyor. Ancak Voltaire’in bu kitabı yazmasındaki amacın Leibniz’in felsefesinde yer alan “Tanrı ve Önceden Kurulmuş Uyum İlkesi”ni eleştirmek olduğu biliniyor. Bundan dolayı yapıta adını veren “Kader” kısmı bir bakıma yapıtın aslında boş ve anlamsız inançlara yergi ve göndermeler yaptığını göstermekle birlikte, Voltaire’in insanın eylemlerinde özgür olabileceğinin altını fazlasıyla çizdiğini söyleyebiliriz. Kitaptaki olaylar içerdiği ironilerle oldukça öğretici niteliğe sahip. Ayrıca iki farklı edebi türün -roman ve masalın- bu kitap içerisinde birleştirildiği görülüyor. Ve okur kendisini Bin Bir Gece Masalları’nın içerisinde hissediyor kitap boyunca, kelimeler su gibi akıp gidiyor. Yapıtın, aslen bir yergi amacıyla yazıldığının göz önünde bulundurularak okunmasının önemli olduğunu düşünüyorum.

قصة شرقية نقلها الى العربية الدكتور طه حسين ، وكان نقلاً غاية في الروعة والسلاسة وكأنها كتبت في أول الأمر بالعربية
قصة تحكي تاريخ زديج (البطل) ، وتَعْرض مغامرات و مشاكل كثيرة تعرّض إليها زديج وقد تمكن من حلها بحمكته وفطانة عقله ، حيث أنه بالرغم من امتلاكه لهذه الصفات من رجاحة عقل ومهارة وكرم وأخلاق كان في أغلب الأحيان يتعرض للعقاب والمشاكل ، الا انه في آخر الأمر دخلت السعادة قلبه ، وأصبح أكثر من يتحدث الناس عنه ، وفي نهاية المطاف تُوج ملكاً على بابل.
أعجبني أسلوب الكاتب جداً حيث كان سلساً ماهر ، أما لغته فكانت غاية في الذكاء والجمال ،وما عرضه من ألغاز ذكية حلّها زديج بمهارة.

Yapısıyla "Candide"i hatırlatan "Sadık veya Kader - Bir Doğu Masalı / Zadig ou la Destinée", Voltaire’in eleştirel zekası ve hiciv dolu diliyle okudukça devleşen harika bir pikaresk roman örneği. Walau gak terbiasa dengan gaya bercerita Voltaire tapi kisah hidup si Zadig yang sempurna tapi sangat sulit meraih kebahagiaan ini cukup sederhana. Digambarkan dengan agak komikal dan satir, berbagai filosofi berbalut cerita penuh hikmah ini bisa dinikmati dengan cepat.
Setiap bab sebetulnya menawarkan kebijakan dan pesan yang berbeda tapi uniknya semua ini diangkat bersambung membentuk plot yang utuh sampai akhir.

A Goodreads friend just read this book and did not like it very much. I told him it was my favorite story and Zadig was my favorite hero. Not unexpectedly he wanted me to elaborate. So I just reread it.
I must start by saying that I read it when I was fourteen, maybe fifteen years old. And I had read nothing but Science Fiction until then (and I turned to Voltaire because I was told that he had written SF, like Mikromegas).
And Voltaire made a huge impression on me. I liked everything but especially Zadig. Why?
Now Candide is more famous and influential (maybe even better, objectively) but I did (and do not) like stupid characters as the heroes of books (with notable exceptions of course, like Charlie). And I did not like having a heroine called Kunigunde.
On the surface both stories appear to be similar. Everytime things seem to turn out right, the next twist of fate occurs and our heroes find themselves in misery. But the difference is that Zadig acively uses his intelligence and character to fight against fate whereas Candide just lets things happen to him. And Candide ends beautifully, but somehow nihilistically, with him just caring for his garden. The story of Zadig on the other hand seems to have a fairy-tale ending with him getting his love and becoming King.
Zadig wants to be happy. And Voltaire takes his time to establish what a good character our hero is. But the way he does it is just brilliant. Because there is irony and wisdom in nearly every single sentence.

I remember vividly the effect of reading about someone not boasting of his contempt for women! That was two orders of magnitude away from what I was accustomed to, namely to silently adore the fairer sex.
Now it is time for action. Zadig wants to take a wife. And again, this is magnificent: “He had a sincere Affection for her, grounded on Honour, and Semira conceiv’d as tender a Passion for him.” (... et Sémire l‘amait avec passion[!])
She loves him passionately but then, fighting for her honour he gets wounded, nearly loses his eye (nice doctor’s bashing just in passing) and that brings the passionate lady to leave our guy.
And the goodness of Zadig leads to the next crisis. Because he feels he has to teach his next lover a lesson, because she complains about a lady being a hypocrite. So he makes her to want to cut off his nose thinking he was dead. I just loved that. Still do.
So he decides to forget about women and to seek happiness in philosophy. Wise guy. This time his intelligence leads to misery. By a feat worthy of Old Shatterhand and Sherlock Holmes he gets arrested. Has to pay a fee of 400 unces (he gets it back after he proves he was innocent minus 398 unces for Fees of the Court.)
Okay maybe I should not go to the entire story like this. (Although it is a pity to leave out the story of the half-split poem that nearly costs him his head.)
So he becomes minister and a favorite of the king. Falls in love with the queen, needs to flee. Fights for the honour of a lady again who is not as thankful as one should expect. Is sold into slavery, manages by his wit, to become a friend of his master. And he finally makes it back to Babylon, fighting and solving riddles to become the new king and to marry the old queen.
There is an odd chapter near the end where Zadig meets an Hermit who turns out to be an angel, Jesrad. He had robbed the apparently good guy and had given riches to bad guy. And had finally killed a young 14 year old kid. Why? Because the kid would have killed his aunt. Wouldn‘t it have been better to make a decent man out of the boy instead of killing him? Zadig wants to know. No, because then he would have been killed by his son. So Fate, or Determinism raises its ugly head. “...there is no such Thing as Chance, all Misfortunes are intended, either as severe Trials, Judgments, or Rewards; and are the Result of Foreknowledge“, the angel says. This seems to be the essence of the book. But I do not buy it. And Zadig wants to contradict. “But...” he says.
So he returns to Babylon and this is how it ends: “The whole Country was sway’d by Love and Justice. Every one blest Zadig; and Zadig blest Heav’n for his unexpected Success.“ The original reads: On bénissait Zadig, et Zadig bénissait le ciel. Quite different. And the German I read ends with: ... and Zadig segnete das Schicksal. Maybe I overinterpreted that (due to the bad translation) but to me the last sentence did not mean that Zadig was thankful for fate but that he is blessing a fate where he played an active part.
And now to the question why Zadig is the ultimate hero for me. He is good, but not too good. Maybe he should not have led his wife into the temptation of cutting off his nose. When he fights for the Arab lady and gets insulted afterwards he declines to fight for her again when she gets attacked. He is not only intelligent he has common sense. As exemplified on the question whether to eat a non-existing bird. He is an excellent judge. It is to him that mankind owes the grand principle that it is better to have a guilty man go free than to condemn an innocent. He ended the custom to burn widows. And his greatest deed: he manages to say a good word about a man who had fallen into disfavour. Voltaire humour.
All this does not mean he was never wrong in his judgements. In a case where he has to decide who was to be accepted as a father (a twist on the old Solomon task) he makes the wrong decision. The one promises to teach the child “the Eight Parts of Speech; then I’ll teach him Logic, Astrology, Magick, the wide Difference between the Terms Substance and Accident, Abstract and Concrete“ (and monads and preestablished harmony - left out in the translation). The other says he attempts to make the child into an Honest man. Zadig decides in favour of the second one. If ever there was a miscarriage of judgement.
And finally how about this: Il croyait que les lois ètaient faites pour secourir autant que pour les intimider.
This gets rendered as: It was his firm Opinion, that the Laws were intended to be a Praise to those who did well, as much as to be a Terror to Evildoers.
DeepL has this to offer: He believed that laws were made to help as well as to intimidate.
I prefer the German translation: Er war der Ansicht, dass die Gesetze nicht nur dazu da seien, die Menschen einzuschüchtern, sondern auch um sie zu schützen.

‘ซาดิก’ นิยายของ วอลแตร์ เล่มที่สองที่เราได้มีโอกาสอ่าน
พบว่า สนุกและมีอะไรให้ขบคิดมากกว่า “คนเถื่อน”

On the surface, this book feels very similar to ‘Candide’. It is a philosophical novel whereby the protagnist experiences a series of unfortunate events. In fact he experiences so many unfortunate events that it is hilarious. However, beneath the surface there is a profound difference in their central messages. While both stories provide insights into navigating a world full of injustice, their intended approaches and outcomes are distinct, tailored to individuals with very different aspirations.
Unlike in ‘Candide’, the relentless misfortunes experienced by Zadig transcends the slapstick quality of mere misfortune and explores moral resilience and intellectual growth. Voltaire asserts that in a world filled with injustice, unpredictability and general chaos, you must try to maintain your integrity, uphold your principles and seek wisdom. Crucially, Zadig distinguishes himself from Candide in his depth of character. His responses to adversity reflect a wisdom and thoughtfulness unlike Candide’s, whose experiences feel propelled by chance. Zadig's resilience is hard-earned through introspection and personal growth. His recovery from misfortune seems more rooted in his character rather than being a byproduct of luck. Zadig is a lot wiser and more thoughtful than Candide and therefore his recovery from these negative events feels more earned and less caused by luck.
While both 'Candide' and 'Zadig' address the challenges of an unjust world, their underlying messages tailor their guidance to individuals with differing aspirations. 'Candide' suggests a path of individual well-being through detachment, instructing the reader to seek refuge from an unjust world by turning their focus inward and nurturing their immediate surroundings. In contrast, 'Zadig' seems to be aimed at those who can’t sit back and tend to their own garden, when they see an unjust world. In ‘Zadig’ Voltaire encourages active participation with the world through moral strength and self-defined purpose. Here, Voltaire asserts that if you choose to engage with the complexities of humanity, personal cultivation isn't enough. To bring about change and assume a leadership role in improving society, moral resistance and a well-defined sense of self are essential.
For me personally, I am very happy to sit back and ‘tend to my own garden’, however, I enjoyed the story of someone much more ambitious than myself.

Audio book d’une traite en voiture et encore un coup de cœur pour Voltaire.
Dans ce conte philosophique on suit le sage Zadig de Babylone à qui il arrive 1000 aventures bien malgré lui avec ses amours (surtout Astarté) et son ami fidèle Cador.
C’est surtout l’exercice de la RAISON implacable face au fanatisme religieux, tout ce qui a d’absolu dans les monarchies de son époque (et celles de Voltaire), la brutalité des politiques et des dogmes pour éveiller les esprits à la recherche du bonheur.
Certains sujets sont très actuels et font échos à notre société.
J’ai beaucoup ri aussi à certaines scènes absurdes en me disant « mais en fait ça existe encore bel et bien ».
Lisez le, écoutez le, lisez ou écoutez Voltaire !
