I wish I could give this volume the rating it deserves, but there is one major thing preventing a higher rating: ‘Black Aoki’. Let’s call it what it is; blackface. I cannot ignore this. I am so disappointed with the author for including this. I simply won’t give excuses like that it was just the culture at the time. Blackface will never be acceptable, even if it was a sign of the times. Shame on Joji Morikawa. And shame on the people who allowed and approved racism to be added to this incredible series. Also, shame on all the people who rated this book highly. Either you saw the blackface and willingly ignored it or you are ignorant and did not see it for what it is.
Favorite fight of the series so far, I can’t wait to see how the tournament progresses. I actually wanted to root for Jason, even though I knew he wasn’t winning. I would rate this 4 or maybe even a 5 but there’s a chapter that has not aged well at all and I hope I don’t see more of that later on.

Two fights in this volume. First Ippo's second fight as a pro, with a boxer who cheats by using headbutts. I thought it was charming that Umezawa and his two friends, all of whom used to bully Ippo, came to watch and were so impressed by Ippo's strength. Then the rookie championship arc began. Ippo is in different blocks from Miyata and Mashiba, but he gets a black boxer as his first match. Jason, newly arrived in Tokyo, is invited to spar by another boxer in the rookie championship, whom he hospitalizes. Rumor spreads about his hook and Ippo practices ducking with Takamura. The volume ends in the middle of the match between Ippo and Jason.

I love how dynamic and thrilling the portrayal of the matches is in this series.
In this volume, Ippo has his second pro match, and then the rookie king championship starts. A real cliffhanger, as the book ends just before the end of the match...
