Three Magic Words is a ground-breaking book about the greatest idea in the world-a secret revealed in just three words-an idea so simple, so startling, so wonderful that it can start you on an adventure that will forever change the way you see yourself, others, and life. Knowing the secret opens up a whole new world of contentment, fulfillment, joy and abundance.
Uell Stanley Andersen was a successful self-help author in the 1950s and 1960s. Once a professional football player, he had a number of careers including running an advertising agency, wild-catting for oil, logging at the Columbia Sawmill, and acting as a gunnery officer on a destroyer escort.
Born in the USA of Norwegian parentage, U. S. Andersen developed his inspiring, dynamic philosophy during a very active life. He learned about the psychology of winning when he was a football great. In World War II he served as a Naval officer and in the heat of battle learned that evil is the great illusion and that sin is error. It was in Mary Baker Eddy's book "Science and Health" that he first glimpsed these great truths, and he later quoted from her book in some of his own metaphysical writings. In later years as a successful Los Angeles businessman, he learned that the secret of success is to create rather than to compete.
As well as the Christian Science writings of Mary Baker Eddy, Andersen also studied the mystical teachings and philosophies of Emmanuel Swedenborg, of the American "sleeping prophet", Edgar Cayce, of the celebrated Scottish spiritualist Daniel Dunglas Home, of philosopher Jacob Boehme, and the poetry of William Blake and Edward Carpenter, among others, and his own belief system was in effect a synthesis of the spiritual and mystical teachings of these writers. Jacob Boehme stated that when he was working he was the helpless tool of some power other than his normal surface mind, and Andersen clearly believed that some area of mental or spiritual existence, of immensely heightened perception, exists beyond and above man's surface personality and mind.
His concept of Reality as explained in his various books is very much inline with New Thought teachings: "Universal Mind is a vast and all-encompassing mental and spiritual being in whom all things and events exist. The principal quality of this Mind is that it is just one, infinite in size, eternal in scope, and nothing exists outside It. It is an enormous sea of consciousness, pervading all, supporting all, and individual consciousness grows out of It. All things are made from It; It is rock, sea, bird, beast, man. All things in their true essence, then, are mental, or spiritual, and the rock itself is not a rock at all but merely an example of enclosed or restricted consciousness. Awareness is in the rock. Universal Mind is there." (The Secret of Secrets, 1958.) An articulate spokesman for mystical patriotism — the spiritual meaning of America — he was an unforgettable lecturer; and his insights into ecology led to the founding of his Atlantis University in Newport, Oregon, from where he taught his own brand of mysticism.
He published under the names U.S. Andersen and Uell S. Andersen.
He wrote the screenplay for the movie “The Charlatans.”
His short story Turn Ever so Quickly was included in Houghton Mifflin's anthology The Best American Short Stories of 1963.
Highly illuminating, empowering & uplifting. The ultimate feel good book. God according to Andersen is entirely loving and benevolent. There is no fire or brimstones here. His idea that evil is an illusion due to human error and errors have no room in a perfect being such as God is particularly illuminating. Although I don't always agree with him entirely, I do find the corpus of his philosophy to be mostly self-evident. Of particular interest is the 30-day mental diet, where you challenge yourself to go on for 30 days thinking of only the good, not allowing any kind of negativity to creep through. A difficult and certainly worthwhile challenge!
Not just a philosophical treatise, but also a practical manual. Andersen shows how all of God's creative powers is available to you should you have faith and is willing to accept. If you practice his meditations daily you'll no doubt feel a sense of peace and serenity.
Although the name God is used, it shouldn't be confused as a Christian text. It clearly belongs to the school of New Thought along with the likes of Emerson & Thoreau. The basic idea of God adopted is very much Vedaic, where all beings, all things and all space is a manifestation of the one birthless deathless consciousness. Based on this view the book covers the usual topics of Faith, Love, Sex, Health & Success.
While his style is easy to read and understand, but due to the nature of the material it is best read a chapter at time over a number of days.
Great book. I previously read Bhagavad Gita and conversations with God, that dampened by reaction to the lessons of this book. Nevertheless the book is excellent for anyone wanting to awaken their sub conscious and discover that they are made in the image of the creator and thus are all powerful in the physical realm. Some big take aways:
- The devil and hell do not exist. This is a such a controversial idea. the reason is that God cannot create evil. Therefore it is not something real. Rather, it evil might be opportunities for us to become our greatest selves. To rise and fight for what is good. It also speaks like Conversations with God. As I read the old testament, you wonder, if God gave you free will. why would he punish you for making the wrong choice? If God is all love and Paul says Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.. but in the old testament..God is alot of that.. It makes me question if Jesus came to show us the real truth. that we are God and dont need the church.
- The higher the conscious the more prone the body is to disease. Think who is more prone to get sick? Humans are..and that proneness to diseases goes down as we move down the animal and inspect kingdom. Makes you think.
- We dont make our thoughts. We simply choose them. Thoughts come into our head all the time, however, we get to choose the ones we want to pay attention to.
- I AM GOD. I think this is the greatest lesson and it is one that the universe is confused with.. it so contrary to the world we live in..that i think it would question many ways of life. If we realized that we were God and that our lives was a result of our decisions.. we would need to take ownership of our lives. that is what scares us most. The fact that we had the power to change our lives and elected instead to complain and blame circumstances or others for our unhappiness.
GOLD: “Nothing is impossible to the human mind when the Lock is removed.”
“Each day of your life you are sowing seeds that one day you must harvest. When you have come to truly understand this, you will take your satisfaction from your work and never from your harvest. For the sowing of the seed is all any of us does in this life.”
“It is apparent that inductive reasoning knows circumstance and seeks the law, while deductive reasoning knows the law and seeks the circumstance. The parallel can be seen immediately. Man knows circumstance and seeks the law. The Universal Subconscious Mind knows the law and seeks the circumstance.”
“No goal is too distant, no path too arduous when we take the journey step by ‘step. Withdraw your mind from the seemingly impossible summit and turn your attention to the step to be taken today. Our steps through life are chains of cause and effect, and each step successfully taken delivers the next one to us with greater ease until in the end the final goal is ours.”
“The commandments are only two: Know that fear is your enemy, and understand the Lock.”
I am not sure why this is so highly rated. I had a hard time getting past the amateur editing/publication which lacked the polished structure of a professional book. He use the word "that" a ton and mostly incorrectly. I didn't get the positive surge of energy and motivation I usually get from reading the power of though books.
I found this book to be very helpful and informative. This isn't a quick read. I found myself re-reading several sentences/paragraphs. I especially enjoyed the meditations.
I think everyone on the planet should read this book....it's life changing but you've got to be open to the bold concepts and ideas presented. This will be something I re-read every year. Truly amazing!
A superb read and my favorite U.S. Andersen book (The Greatest Power in the Universe and The Magic in Your Mind being the other two that I own).
Firstly, let me say that I won’t spoil the book and tell you what the “Three Magic Words” are, suffice it to say that they are shared in the final chapter of the book; however, by the time you arrive there you will likely have determined what they are because U.S. Andersen provides ample morsels as you travel the road of self-discovery. Here's a hint though, it is not "I love you."
Some of the empowering and illuminating ideas that you will encounter on this journey (roughly in the order in which they appear) include:
- Conceptual habits of the Conscious Mind are the greatest bar to man’s discovery of himself. - Thought plus Conviction equals Manifestation. - We have looked around us at the material world, made judgments about things and people and then imposed those judgments upon ourselves. By looking outward we have achieved what we believe to be knowledge about ourselves, and this is falsity of the very highest degree. - Good is truth. Evil is error. - Now what we are saying is essentially this: everything is basically one thing, has no beginning and no end, has no past and no future, but only one eternal now. - The truth is that the physical world has accustomed us to the wrong use of faith. In material things our faith habitually follows demonstration: while in spiritual or mental things faith must always precede demonstration. - We are all born equal for we are all one… - Vanity and guilt are the destroyers of attunement, errors of growing self-consciousness, creators of illusion and evil. - Those who cling to their little established worlds are holding onto mere dust.
I really resonated with these aforementioned quotes and many more of the ideas shared by U.S. Andersen in “Three Magic Words.” Overall, I found “Three Magic Words” to be a pleasure to read (unlike “The Magic in your Mind” – a book by the same author – which I reviewed at an earlier date). If you enjoy books by Ernest Holmes, Joseph Murphy, Wayne Dyer, Neville, or any of the other early New Thought authors, then I think you will also enjoy “Three Magic Words.”
I was back and forth with this. I learned of U.S. Andersen through Kelly Howell. "The Secret Universal Mind Meditation" is based on his books, so I was intrigued. It started off just OK for me. I wasn't learning much new information. The middle was the most interesting part. A lot of what he said resonated with me, and I was thinking to myself, "surprisingly this isn't dated." The last 1/3 of the book had me rethink that comment. I do understand how some of the examples he used were from his own life during his lifetime, I made allowances for that. The reason the last 1/3 of the book did not resonate with me was because in the last 50 years, we've learned so much, especially about health. I do not believe the diseases that plague us as a people are easily 'prayed' away. Obesity is not solely due to our state of mind. It is due to the prevalence of fast food, processed food and things like long work days and no one at home to cook nutritious food for us after that long day. Granted, back in Andersen's day, there wasn't a McDonalds on every street.
A lot of today's diseases are due to those factors as well as the way our food is farmed. Again, something that was not in our world 50 years ago. So where as I understand the idea of changing our state of mind to improve our health, what we need to do is change our state of mind, to understand that the way we are eating and what we are eating is the culprit. Then REAL food has to be made affordable to the masses, not just to the ones who can afford it.
This part of the book bothered me because I feel that many uninformed people will read it, and start believing that the way they think on a surface level will make them well, as opposed to coming to the realization that their diet is the major culprit. But this isn't a health/diet book, so I will move on.
All was not lost. I did enjoy his chapter on reincarnation which is toward the end of the book.
I thought that this was a wonderful book. It is a "Law of Attraction" book and much more. US Andersen is very "dialed in" and gives a step by step way of using our minds to advance our life. He often uses scripture and quotes from sages to help make his case. This is a very good book for anyone who has read Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, The Secret etc. The Secret is a good introduction to the L of A but Three Magic Words makes up for where that book falls short.
Three Magic Words is subtitled 'The key to Power, Peace and Plenty' and the book are the author's dissertations on life. It is his journey to find reason from page 3: "No circumstance or fact or event or thing exists that does not have a reason, and so it is with man...."
One of the worst reads I have trudged through in years. In theory it gives an idealistic view of how to approach life but I found The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali more enlightening and easier to read. If your a masochist give it a read but be warned you will lose brain cells in the process.
Fantastic book I recommend it to everyone who is looking for purpose and are trying to find out what life is about.
Mind blowing a very interesting and informative book. Looking to find answers . This book is a fantastic description of self. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
This book talk about our inner world. I bought an audio version and have been listening repeatedly for at least a year. This is a powerful truth and had changed my life completely, as amount many more books I have read.

Overall, this book is highly recommended for people who want to solidify and affirm their journeys and connections to the universal subconsciousness. It can be a starting point for some with understanding our purpose as humanity on this physical plane, however there’s a lot of information to navigate through. It’s doable, definitely depending on how open your mind is with varying perspectives. It’s a little repetitive to drive the message, which I completely understand. It’s not a book to rush through and it may be worth reading across your lifetime depending on what you understand during the first read, the second read, etc. Definitely take your time reading this one, and best of luck to you on your journey in life! 🌙

I enjoyed reading this book. The author is intelligent and well-read. His ideas are presented clearly. The synopsis of the book given here on Goodreads, I think missed the point. I've also read that this book has been related to the law of attraction movement, but I see that as a very minimal part of what this book is about. The chapter on "success" was at the back of the book and very short as were the chapters on relationships and health. For me, the book was about inner change and finding peace and not about getting more stuff. And there was a clear direction on how to do that - meditate daily, quiet your mind, seek wisdom.
An explanation of how the mind works subconscious and subconscious. SOme of the metatphysical stuff especially about hypnosis and such flew over my head as I'm a bit skeptic but I really liked the sections on faith, love and the nature of success. Having read some new thought stuff by Eckhart Tolle it felt like a revision of some of the concepts about ego as well as the unity of al things. It also expounds well on how your way of thinking moulds what happens in your life as everything begins with a thought. I'd recommend it though some bits sounded a bit like hocus pocus to me.
Profound!! Incredibly insightful and resonate so much with what U.S Anderson writes. Even being originally published in 1954, it still holds so true today. Quite possibly one of the greatest books I have ever read and will continue to re-read it to fully absorb the messages and truths about who and what we really are.
We are infinite beings! We are not only our physical bodies. This is really a new age read on spirituality that challenges modern religion. But I’m reminded that trusting in the limitless possibilities that God provides, puts the limitations of my ego to the side.
