The origin of the universe and the beginning of life forms on earth can be both speculative and scientific. P K N Panicker's academic account of these and other interesting geophysical features of our earth approaches the subject with extreme scientific preponderance. Yet, a good blend of scientific, historic and cultural facts in chronological sequence, makes the narration comprehensible and highly readable. For a subject such as this, a textbook approach to these aspects is both necessary and desirable. The journey from our beginning to our present-day problems of industrialisation and environmental concerns, covers several important geological landmarks that no serious reader on the subject can overlook. In doing so, the reader is invited to participate - and in the end - accept the responsibility to conserve and improve upon our own beautiful earth.
