Environmental Hydrology

Rate this book

The technological advances of recent years include the emergence of new remote sensing and geographic information systems that are invaluable for the study of wetlands, agricultural land, and land use change. Students, hydrologists, and environmental engineers are searching for a comprehensive hydrogeologic overview that supplements information on hydrologic processes with data on these new information technology tools.

Environmental Hydrology, Second Edition builds upon the foundation of the bestselling first edition by providing a qualitative understanding of hydrologic processes while introducing new methods for quantifying hydrologic parameters and processes. Written by authors with extensive multidisciplinary experience, the text first discusses the components of the hydrologic cycle, then follows with chapters on precipitation, stream processes, human impacts, new information system applications, and numerous other methods and strategies.

By updating this thorough text with the newest analytical tools and measurement methodologies in the field, the authors provide an ideal reference for students and professionals in environmental science, hydrology, soil science, geology, ecological engineering, and countless other environmental fields.

Sorry for my previous 3 star review. I was just tired from too much school. Actually a very good and helpful textbook.

The semester's not done but I'm rating my textbooks now because I already know what I think of them. This one made me cry in my first week. The first half of every chapter is more conceptual, and then BAM! mid-chapter you turn the page and there's suddenly 8 equations you have to (pretend to be able to) decipher. I went into Hydrology not knowing it was so heavy on math, and even though I like math, this scared the shit out of me.

Once I realized that I was going to be tested more on the concepts than the equations, I calmed down. But this still begs the question: Why the hell are we reading this textbook? Is there not a hydrology textbook out there that lays out the concepts, visualizes them (in color???), and then just gives us a few relevant equations that we might actually use in our lifetime? If not, they why not???? (I plead to the sky!!!)

To someone reading this review who thinks to themselves that it is more about my experience of the class than the textbook itself, I know. I know that I'm stressed out and being a little harsh, and this is, in fact, me trying to be kind and temper myself. I wanted to give two stars, but I gave three considering this.

TL;DR this does not feel like an intro to hydrology book. The only thing it's achieved, really, is making me feel like an imposter and giving me a testing ground for my pastel highlighters that I thought would keep me "engaged," but are not, in fact, magic highlighters.
