A tedious book at the conflict between Native Americans and Canadians. The first half of the book really dragged. There was also confusion because two characters were named Gilles. Although the second half of the book was more readable, I was not really invested in any of the characters. I would love to read a more interesting book about the problems in Canada between the First Nations and French and English invaders.

finished 18th september 2024 good read three stars i liked it kindle library loaner first from hamelin took it out on loan without reading any story description liked the cover and only three reviews now at goodreads a story around since 1992. one reader did not finish the other called it tedious. hamelin's style is a bit more sophisticated than many and the words used suggest a vocabulary at odds with the location, way out in the sticks, the end of the road of sorts, mainly indians in the area though a small number of whites are on hand and the area is visited by americans who also bring their own containers of gas. nobody has cell phones in front of them 24 7 so entertainment is drink and fornication and the attendant problems associated with those actions. story narrator is a white who is in the area for a time and there's some conflict from the past that is covered from time to time, a shooting, the details of which are not entirely clear. it is a long read and if you're one to grow impatient in the line at mcdonald's this one might not be for you
