Bryan Fogel and Sam Wolfsen deliver the ultimate book of Jewish humour. It contains the Jewish nursery blueprint, complete with panic room, fireproof wallpaper and guardian ninja, the top-ten list of Jewish 'dont's', the complete timeline of Jewish expulsion, and much more.
I read this in one sitting in a Barnes and Noble and though they probably want me to never come back my hours of loitering was well worth it. A poking-fun-at-ourselves yet smart commentary on the history and the culture of the Jews. I especially liked all the conversations with the authors' mothers. Mazel tov!
The thing about writing a humor book about Jews and Jewish culture is that you end up regurgitating jokes people have been telling for a long time, leading to a not very unique product. The style of the book itself reminded me a lot of Jon Stewart's America (The Book). At a few points, the authors felt the need to point out that some random interesting fact they were providing was true, since so much of the rest of the book was made up. These actually ended up being the best part of the book to me, and I was left wishing there were more of them.
This is the first review I’ve ever done on Goodreads. This is the most stupid and insulting book I’ve ever read. I thought it would be funny. It’s awful. I really tried to get into it. After reading the first few pages I skimmed the rest of the book and then literally threw it out. Don’t waste your time.
This book is a little dated. It’s from 2005ish and the humor is pretty dark. But, the humor is incredibly funny. This book is insightful and witty and charming while also poignant and interesting. The audio version features some really good voice work so go for the audiobook. Enjoy!
I think this was a case of lost in translation. I came upon the audiobook of Jewtopia at Half-priced Books. Always one for Jewish humor, I picked it up and popped it in my CD player. By reading other reviews, it sounds like the CD version was not nearly as funny as the book version as it lacked pictures and illustrations. I did laugh out loud at all of the Jewish mother bits as they were so true. I wish I would have read the book instead of listened to it.
Funny, funny stuff! Not fantastic and groundbreakingly funny (afterall, there are only so many Jew jokes two Jews can smoosh into one book) but I am very eager to see the show now! A history of the Jews by Jews from Genesis right down to proof that the Jews own Hollywood...worth the three hours it takes to "read" in the car. (And I would recommend listening to it...great delivery by the authors)
Jewish humor with a dose of Jewish history. Hilarious ! ! ! Loaded with great visuals. I especially liked the parts about manscaping, how to avoid germs in hotel rooms and tools and mechanical skills (or lack thereof).
