Turning eighteen is an exciting time for most girls. It means finally being considered a legal adult, having more freedom and a wild birthday party. For Haven Vigano, it means immortality, a craving for human blood and no longer being able to move around in the daytime. Haven is a Dayling, but in three weeks she will 'Cross Over' into the world of Nightlings. Most Daylings live their lives as humans for as long as they can, which means they attend school, make normal friends and indulge in all the pleasures of being mortal... Most Daylings except for Haven. She's as antisocial as they come, even in the Dayling world. To make matters worst, a friend from her past, another Dayling named Sébastien, arrives in Tallahassee with the news that an ancient group of Nightling hunters called The Holy Sect of Mântuitors are hunting down and killing her kind. Haven's father fears a Nightling is helping the Mântuitors in their quest to rid the world of immortals. Now Haven must deal with her growing attraction to Philip, a teenage boy she saved from being beaten by four other guys, plus understand Sébastien's jealousy towards her human crush, and oh yeah, help deal with the threat of the Mântuitors. Times were a lot simpler for Haven when she felt indifferent towards everything and everyone. About the Gabriel Madison Gabriel Madison started writing when he was in high school. He attended a private art University in Atlanta Georgia for Media Production where he wrote a few screenplays and made a few short movies, including a twelve-minute vampire movie he adapted from a short story called Midnight Diner. Later, he returned to writing novellas and novel length projects. His first novel, Three Seeds, was released in August. Also, he has a novella called The Green-Eyed Devil coming out as an eBook. Gabriel was once asked to describe myself; the only answer he could come up with storyteller.
I started writing when I was in high school, mostly short stories and poetry, and then developed a passion for screenplays. I attended a private art University in Atlanta Georgia for Media Production. There I studied script writing and film making. I wrote a few screenplays, and made a few short movies, including a twelve-minute vampire movie, I adapted from a short story, called Midnight Diner. After leaving school, my passion shifted mainly towards writing stories, than shooting and directing them. I write short stories, novellas, screenplays, graphic novels and full-length novels. I was once asked to define myself; the only answer I could come up with was ‘storyteller’. I now live back home in Albany Georgia.
First, I love anything that has vampires in it, which is odd because my first book isn’t about vampires. Although, at first Rose was a vamp, but I changed it after my cousin got me into the TV show Carnivàle. I started getting into secret societies and mythology and other paranormal stories. I decided to change the direction of Three Seeds from vamps, to beings that I came up with in my head. I already had the Guardians (characters in the book) in a short story I wrote, and then I created the other supernatural beings to complete my Urban Fantasy world. I am working on two YA novels. I'm also working on a pilot for a kids show in Atlanta. The kid show is out of my normal writing element, but the challenge of it is what makes it fun.
As for TV shows: Like I said, I’m into anything with vamps, so number one on my list is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Next is almost everything else that has been on TV. I’ve watched everything from Roswell to The West Wing and from the Cosby Show to One Three Hill. I just got into Chuck. Used to love Heroes (used to.) Loved The 4400, Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls, Dexter, Weeds, Growing Pains, and on and on.
Music: Too large a list to make. But lets say my taste go from the Beatles to 2pac and Tori Amos and Radiohead and Stone Temple Pilot and Maxwell and Disturbed and on and on.
I liked Madison's take on vampires, which is why I rated this higher based on the urban fantasy aspects than I would based on the romance. As for the romance aspects, I didn't care as much for them, because I did not like Phillip, the love interest. Haven was a pretty good heroine.
Haven never wanted to be normal, until it was too late.
I think Mr. Madison has an interesting take on the world of vampires. The idea that vampires exist in two separate states and can reproduce isn’t entirely new. However, I believe Dayling is one of the first vampire stories I’ve read that never mentions a way for humans to be turned. This certainly makes relationships between humans and Daylings/Nightlings very complicated.
Haven is definitely a girl who likes to test her boundaries. Her sharp tongue and abrasive personality get her into plenty of trouble throughout the story. I must say that I was very frustrated with Haven and her attitude at times. While I understand that she is a teenager trying to come to terms with some big changes in her life, I couldn’t believe that she would continue to put her family, friends, and herself in life threatening situations. Haven is a smart girl who definitely knows better. Despite this issue, I’m pleased to note that Haven does have a softer side and is the type of girl who champions the underdog, whether that means standing up for her cousin Angela or rescuing Philip from a sound beating.
I had a very hard time warming up to Philip. He comes off simply as a typical, popular teenage boy who uses his appeal to get girls into his bed. While the girls in the story can’t seem to get enough of his charm, I was a little put off by his attitude. It is very difficult to tell if Philip’s pursuit of Haven is genuine, or if he’s simply looking for another conquest. I will say that Philip never denies his playboy ways and doesn’t pretend to be something he’s not. When Haven chooses to hang around Philip, she certainly knows what she’s getting into.
In addition to my reservations about Philip’s character, I wasn’t really feeling the connection between him and Haven. Haven seems to have more of an obsessive crush on him rather than any deeper feelings. When Haven and Philip do have some rare alone time, they spend it flirting, but never seem to truly get to know each other on a personal level because Haven doesn’t seem to be comfortable opening up to Philip. It wasn’t until the very end of the story that I began to see a sliver of hope for Haven and Philip’s future.
The ending of Dayling is certainly intense, but I also felt it was rushed and a bit predictable. I had no problem figuring out who the mastermind behind the murders of the Nightling/Dayling families was. However, the reasoning behind some of this character’s actions remains a bit murky. I’m not sure why this character chose to bring some people into his plot and keep others in the dark. Also, the fate of the antagonist is unclear at the conclusion. Will there be a sequel to tie up this loose end?
In general, I think Dayling is a good read. Mr. Madison’s vampire mythology is interesting, and Haven and her exploits are certainly entertaining. Anyone looking for a vampire story that’s a little different might want to give Dayling a try.
129 pages into this book and I just couldn't continue. I couldn't relate to the character, and her "voice" didn't sound like the teenage girl she's supposed to be. The reading was just tedious to me. I did like the creativity of the vampire world though. If it was a little more polished I'm sure I would've loved it.
First I have to say it took be a while to finish this book. Not because of contexts, but because I had a lot going on and had to go on my yearly family vacation. I am glad I was able to finish it though because it was a really good story. This story was simply wonderful. I loved the fact that Madison created a new world for the vampires, something new that I haven’t read before. The characters were well developed and I truly enjoyed Haven and Phillip’s love story.
Haven Vigano is a Dayling and is the daughter of the leader of the Vigano vampire family which means she hasn’t turned into a vampire just yet. She is stronger than a human still, but not as strong as she will be when she crosses over and turns into a Nightling. Haven still has a few more weeks before she has to say goodbye to the sun and everything a normal teenager takes for granted. One night she gets dragged by her cousin, Sophia to high school party full of human teenage kids. This has never been her crowed, but has not choice but to go. Soon she realizes she has a chance to sneak out and as she walks by a back alley, she sees a boy getting beat up by a group of high school jocks. Something inside of her tells her she needs to turn around and keep walking, but the little voice inside of her tells her that she needs to go and kick some butt and save her “spiky haired prince.” And that’s exactly what she does. The only problem is that she can’t seem to stay away from this boy. After dropping her “prince” at the hospital, she realizes she can’t go home just yet because its still night time and her father, the leader of her family, will be up waiting for her and she knows he will not be happy for her leaving the party alone. Once home, she has to go and confront her father and as her punishment, which by the way, she picks herself, is to enroll herself in high school, which her father agrees to. But little does her father know that her human love interest also attends the same school. That’s where the story takes off and takes you to underground group named “Mântuitors” which date back hundreds of years were created to destroy all creatures of the night, the vampires.
I truly enjoyed reading “Dayling” and the way it ended gave me the impression that there will be a sequel and who knows, maybe this will be the beginning of an amazing series. I sure hope so.

I loved the authors take on vampire although very like other vampire books I enjoyed what the authour changed. I would have given this book five star rating but it only got a 4 star rating as I felt the ending was a bit rushed and the answer to the Problem the main characters were having was too easisly soveled. I would love to have a second book to see what happens next with the characters and they love's.
I thought this was an fresh look at the world of vampires. I liked the way the author was able to show the struggles of being a teenager, but then added another layer to the story by showing how Haven had to also deal with the extra burden of trying to live and enjoy the normal everyday moments of life before turning into a vampire.
I would love to give this more stars..... but there were editing issues and about half of the story was too predictable. The other half of the story was new and interesting. A new look at the vampire world which was refreshing!
