In The Ganges I Lay

Rate this book
Avi is from Denmark and a naturally talented athlete. Retiring early from rigorous training, she decides to go travelling. Her intention, not only to find a new way of thinking but also lessen the pain of her recently deceased pet dog, Bonita.
Setting her sights on India, she starts in the South, in Goa, before slowly journeying North until she reaches the spiritual city of Rishikesh. It is in Rishikesh, the place the Beatles visited in the late 1960's, where Avi is found dead. At the very top of the story her body is discovered almost by mistake. Wrapped, swaddled in linen and floating in the Ganges River, she had been prepared as if part of a Hindu water burial.
A thrilling novel written in a non-linear fashion. We get to meet the people and friends Avi sees along the way in a first person perspective. It cleverly crosses continents and merges cultures with both humour and empathy.
An original, fast moving and thought provoking story.
