About the author

A background in science, education and journalism has been the perfect foundation for author Camilla de la Bedoyere. She studied zoology and geology at Bristol University, and has subsequently written or edited more than 200 books for children and adults, many of which aim to explain and explore the natural world and our relationship with it.

This title is part of a great series we have in the YS non-fic collection. Other books in the series ask "why" about the following interesting subjects: lazy lions, woolly mammoths, scary sharks, spinning tornadoes, fierce vikings, biting fish, hairy orangutans and many more.

These titles would be a good choice for curious youngsters, but the youngest will have to be read to as the text if for solid readers. Vocabulary used is simple and the informational sections are concise and give interesting bits of information. Illustrations are lifelike and avoid being cartoon-y. No photographs in the titles we have, at least.

Good for fun, not serious research.

I read this book and other books in the series when I was in third grade. They are very informational and educating. At the very back you have a little test to make sure you got all the information. I loved all the semi-random things that I learned, and now use on a daily basis. It was cool that I could learn so much from just a silly book! This is the book that made me want to read.
