Some back story!

These short stories give an inside view of a couple of Dark-Hunters. I especially enjoy the little videos of Sherrilyn explaining a little about the process of writing and the characters.
Jamie Gallagher about his great love for his wife, who just died about 3 months prior. He runs into his own great-granddaughter. What a shock.
A short exert about Nick becoming Ambrosious, and what the name really means.
This book also touches bases on the Hellchasers which are just ordinary people no experience in fighting.

Although this collection of stories claims that they are all "never-before-seen", they are almost all (or all) available in other places, most for free on Kenyon's website. I'm not sure how I feel about the false advertising with that.

As a whole the stories are fun and cute, but not really worth paying $5.99 for (in my opinion). They're all pretty short (at an equivalent of 20 pages or less each) and really the only one that adds a lot to the series as a whole is Second Chances, which provides some good insight to the relationship dynamic between Ash and Styxx. Fear of/the Darkness could be argued as valuable to the series. But again, these two stories are available completely free from Sherrilyn Kenyon's website (as of the time I'm writing this review).

Here are links to/my reviews for each story:

Dark-Hunter Christmas (Part 1 & 2): (4 stars)
Read on July 21, 2011
I read this novella as a free ebook from Sherrilyn Kenyon's website: A Dark-Hunter Christmas (see link on book page to go to it). See my review for it here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Second Chances (4 stars)

I read this as a free ebook on Sherrilyn Kenyon's website: Second Chances (see link on book page to go to it). See my review for it here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

The Promise (2 stars)
Read on September 19, 2013
I honestly feel like I've read this somewhere before, like maybe as an extra at the end of one of the books but I'm not sure where exactly. It's a very short scene where Ash makes a promise to Cherise about Nick. Nothing too crazy happens, and it's not worth buying this entire ebook collection just for it alone since most of the other stories you can find for free on her website or in anthologies.

Fear of Darkness (4 stars)

Also known as "Fear the Darkness". I read this novella as a free ebook on Sherrilyn Kenyon's website: Fear the Darkness (see link on book page to go to it). See my review for it here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

This short story collection brings together five stories from the Dark-Hunter universe, all but one previously released elsewhere: The Promise, Dark Hunter Christmas, Second Chances, Fear of Darkness. and Where Angels Fear To Tread. Three fill in small gaps in the overall storyline, one is a stand-alone, and one is a hint of things to come.

THE PROMISE is a VERY brief but emotional story that gives us Acheron's response to Cherise's death. It also includes a promise that will have major ramifications for Nick and Ash.
DARK HUNTER CHRISTMAS is a stand alone story that gives us Gallagher as he struggles with being separated from a family who thinks he is dead until he realizes he is already part of a new family. A feel good story that adds nothing to the mythology, but is a good read.
SECOND CHANCES is another very brief gap-filler. Whatever happened to Styxx after he tried to kill Ash? This has more impact if you've already read Acheron (Dark-Hunter, Book 12).
FEAR THE DARKNESS was a free ebook rthat followed-up with Nick after the death of his mother. It is a sinister-feeling story that helps set the stage for what is to come. I'm not a fan of Nick, so this didn't grab me, but most fans will love it.
Finally, we have WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD that after finishing, I wondered if it was mistakenly included in this collection because it didn't seem to belong in the Dark-Hunter saga. There was nothing in it that marked it as a D-H story. However, it is actually a hint of the Hellchaser story arc that formally begins in Bad Moon Rising. This little snippet doesn't offer much other than to introduce one of the Hellchasers, Zeke.

Overall, these little bits are especially worthwhile for fans, but not strictly necessary for the series as a whole. You can skip them and not miss anything (especially since Fear the Darkness is available free), but it's always nice to return to Kenyon's world. I only wish they'd release a hardcover comprising ALL the D-H short stories from various anthologies over the years. Dresden Files and Sookie Stackhouse have both done so, and I would love to have them all in one volume. My biggest regret for this Insider Guide is that the video content cannot be viewed on the Kindle. Recommended.

This was definitely not worth the price. It did very little in the way of delivering it's title promise to fill in vital points in the Dark-Hunter Universe. The 2-part Christmas story had nothing to do with the main story arch of the series centering on a Dark-Hunter we will probably never hear from again though the supporting characters are old favorites. The story about Nick's return to New Orleans after his first couple of years as a Dark-Hunter reveals an added insight into the twisted tragedy of what happens to Nick and his determination to cling to his hate. The story "Second Chances" also appears as part to the newly released novel Styxx and is redundant and confusing. The final story must have some connection to the Dark-Hunter saga, but if so it has yet to be revealed and is more like a snippet out of a longer work than a story. Very disappointed, can you tell?

A Dark-Hunter Christmas was a very short story that touches the importance of family and guess who's in charge of teaching that lesson to Gallegher, little Ms. Simi. I am enjoying Simi as a character, she has a innocence about herself but yet she is lethal and funny as hell. Every one she loves as family ends up with a limited edition cooking mitten from QVC. Arki lets her use his plastic for orders, LMAO. On a serious note, I find that the short stories add a little more insight to the characters, like in this story you get to see a softer side of Ash. It is very important that you incorporate these stories into your Dark Hunter reading list.

Pretty good collection of stories. Three of them, I've read before at the end of some of the full length books and I got the free copy of Fear of Darkness. I really loved Gallagher's story. I would love to see him as a character in one of the full length books at some point. Who is that man he met when he was nine? That couldn't have been Ash, could it?

Enjoyed learning how Zeke became what he is, too. Makes sense now the things he said to Fang about Thorn.

★★★Dark Hunters:An Insiders Guide Enhanced Edition by Sherrilyn Kenyon in Dark Hunter Series

Dark Hunter Christmas Part 1
Dark Hunter Christmas Part 2
Second Chances
The Promise
Fear the Darkness
Where Angel's Dear to Tread

I have read The Promise somewhere else, but can't for the life of me remember where.Ugh!

unfortunately my kindle cant see the videos. but I had not read these stories before and they did give more insight to the dark hunter world. I love simi. I loved it and wished it was longer I wanted to know more. It would be hard to meet your great grandaughter and not say anything to her. I want to know why they want marrisa. but it is worth reading especially if you have read the other books.

Wish the videos worked...

I enjoyed the short stories as another view into the world of the Dark-Hunters and their losses. It shows how they are a family and must rely/trust each other to survive and continue the fight. I really wished the included videos worked like they did when I first bought the book. Other than malfunctioning videos, I really loved the book.

I can't say that the stories did much for me, but it was kinda fun to watch Kenyon's little interviews about each of them. I did find Menyara starting to call Nick "Ambrosius" interesting, but there wasn't enough to the story to really contribute to Nick's future self as seen in the Chronicles.

It was sad to see Ash at Nick's mother's funeral. The honor he bestowed upon her was so nice. However, Nick has some valid points....
