I was deeply disappointed by this story, or, lack thereof. The story started out promising, with an interesting set of characters and circumstances. But within a chapter and a half, suddenly too many details are skipped and the plot of the story seems skips to the middle. It's as though there was barely an introduction at all. How was Lyra rescued by Rigel? What exactly happened?

For character development, very poor in my opinion. While Lyra seems to have a likeable personality at the beginning, once she's in Atlantis, her personality does a 180 and turns upside down. Her behavior, actions, and even the few mentioned thought processes make no sense.

Lyra's thought process on her anger, which takes up a large portion of the book, is only explained in a few sentences. The rest, we just see her getting mad, which somehow when put into action, ends up turning into sex. If she was angry at Rigel and his people, why would she kiss him instead? Wouldn't her rage stop her, make her too disgusted to even touch him?

And then with Rigel, we only have a vague sense of who he is before we jump prematurely into the two of them exploring each others' bodies and not much of anything else. If he's a warrior, why does he let Lyra rage on her misunderstandings when they're not true? Why don't they actually talk? If he's been alive for hundreds of years, shouldn't he know better?

Why wouldn't Lyra speak to the other human women if she hated his kind? And what was with Lyra's memories blanking out? "What the hell?" was what I mostly thinking when I read this. Took me forever to finish since I had to put it down often in confusion and frustration. I don't recommend it.

Gleeful Goblin Review: The very first chapter of this book made me chortle because as much as I love mer/kraken type stories, just like this book's FMC I would also be wildly seasick and miserable if I were on the open ocean.

The storyline in this book focuses pretty hard on how the FMC responds to traumatic loss which is interesting but be warned, this is not a soft and sweet romance by any means. The FMC is willing to connect with our lonely MMC physically but spends a good long while pushing him far away emotionally. If you are down for a merman who is hörny on main but who desperately wants to be loved at the same time and a human woman who puts up a lot of emotional walls to giving or receiving love this will be a great ride for you. 5/5 Stars.

This is Book 3 of the Lords of the Abyss series by Michelle M. Pillow. Because it isn't properly listed as of this date in its series page, it has to be looked up by the title.

Kindle version is on this page...

This is the third story in the trilogy??, and this one is about Rigel the Hunter and Lyra. Overall, I liked the book, just not more than 3 stars worth. All through the series, the world-buildng was ok, except this didn't seem like a society that could build the robotic pleasure dolls for the mateless warriors... that level of sophistication wasn't reflected in any way in the broader society.... just saying.

Some things get resolved in this story, but some don't. I was a little disappointed in that, as Ms. Pillow usually does a little bit better at that in her books (of which I own quite a few). It was almost as if she just rushed through it because she felt she needed to finish this series, but wasn't all that interested in it any more.

The length of the book is quite a bit shorter, but that was ok, since the story was finished, but there wasn't any information given about what happened to the other two couples in the book in the 'two years later' prologue. There could be more books written in this series since there are quite a few characters that were left hanging, some bad characters that never got their due, etc.

*** What happened with Brigit's triplets???
*** What happened with the Olympians???
*** Will their be more contact with the outside???

Anyway, Ms. Pillow is a good writer, but didn't put nearly the effort into this series as a whole as she did her 'Dragon Lords' or 'Lords of the Var' series. Kind of too many sex scenes in this, too.... got boring and I started skipping through just looking for conversation lines.

Rigel and Lyra were by far my favorite couple in this trilogy. The reason why I am rating it lower than the first, is because this final installment left some unanswered questions. Like what happened to Lysander and his forbidden love. Or Poseidon's curse and disappearance. Lyra wasn't quite as unruly as the first two books led me to believe, either.

But there were highlights as well, first and foremost Rigel's virginity/pleasure nymph scene, his vulnerability/possessiveness AND his jealousy of hotdogs;-)

Glad to see the Scylla issue was adressed. Too bad it didn't end on a happier note, like the closure Lyra finally got to experience. All in all, an ok ending. Though I would have liked to see a HEA for the king as well...

OVERALL RATING –3.5-4 stars

RECOMMENDED FOR: those that like steam with a bit of fantasy romance story.

First my usual points:

- I do not do spoilers unless warned.
- Read the summary above; it will tell you what the book is about. I will not reiterate.
- This is a bit of a standalone but part of a series, where we first met the heroine and get a better view of the worl in book 1; best enjoyed in order.
- No errors that I caught as far as editing.
- The author was pretty new to me but I read the first and second book in the series

BOOK:
- Contemporary fantasy romance
- 1st person with dual POV
Other characters from the series:
-- other characters from the first book make appearances with slight involvement of a supporting. nature; characters from second book are mentioned.as well
-- main characters’ story mostly concluded

Star Ratings - 1 (poor) - 5(READ THIS BOOK)
· Writing Quality: 4 stars
· Story ingredient: 4 stars
· Ease of reading/Pace: 5 stars
· Plot strength: 3.5-4 stars as two people
· Steam Level: 5 stars - open door graphic scenes

Notes/Opinion (personal):
This is a 6 book series that interconnects. I would highly suggest it be read in order as some details were covered in earlier books but not in great detail in this one. As with prior books, I did enjoy the story but felt more detail could have been added to strengthen the world and give the characters more depth. There were some questions left between the main characters that I felt could have been answered to make this more complete. There definitely was steam and I felt at times the steam took over the story and it became mostly about sex, not the relationship. The overall arc of the story is definitely indicative of continuing through the other books (which I have not read at this point). I did like the story but again, feel it left some plot holes.

Decent Story, But Oh, the Profanity!

I have read and enjoyed several books by this author, including her Quirilixen Lords series. I hadn't yet listened to one of her audiobooks, so when two of them in this Lord of the Abyss series became available on a book review site, I thought they'd be fun to listen to. I've enjoyed her snappy, often humorous, way of writing fantasy and sci-fi romance. At the book review site, the book was tagged as Mature. This usually means it's a steamy story, but a notch or two below true erotica. Those are tagged on the site as Explicit. So I was shocked at the level of profanity and coarse sexual terms. I know many people don't mind that, but I'm not one of them. If the level of profanity and near clinical explicitness had been disclosed, I would have passed on the book. You'll hear plenty of P-words to describe female genitalia--one word I particularly abhor--and other words that other readers might find objectionable.

I enjoyed the story itself, aside from this. While the hero and heroine certainly got intimate far too quickly, there are interesting side plots having to do with his long-lost brother and the family she believes lost in the misadventure that brought her into the abyss. The hero soon discovers that his family is responsible for what happened to hers, and he fears what this will mean for her and for them. He falls for her quickly, wanting her to pledge to be his wife, but she's a relatively modern girl who doesn't confuse lust with love, and she does not give away her heart easily. He's almost too sweet and a bit naive for her. There are certainly some funny moments here, especially early on when he first tells her (then shows her) how the men in this undersea world take their pleasure in the relative absence of females.

I only recommend this book if you like slightly wacky sci-fi romance and have a strong stomach for excessive profanity and other coarse terms.

I enjoyed this book and listened to it as an audiobook. I've been with the series from the beginning. As with the others, great world building. I really liked Rigel and even felt bad for him at times. My heart broke for Lyra's pain when the boat she was on with her entire family was sunk and she alone was rescued. She was in shock for most of the beginning and refused to talk even when she was more lucid. I liked her journey to healing, but because this story was so much shorter than the previous two, things happened too fast. One moment she's angry and accusing Rigel of murdering her family, and then next she's sleeping with him. I understand she has to process her grief and try to block things out as best she can, but I can't imagine believing someone murdered my family, and then jumping into bed with them because they are sexy and I need a distraction from my sorrow and anger. It just gave me whiplash. Despite the shorter length of the book, it took surprisingly long for Lyra to finally listen to what happened that night. It just made me very frustrated with her. I loved the ending- that epilogue was exactly what had been on my mind from the beginning and was so happy the author gave it to us instead of leaving me with unanswered questions. As with the previous books, Rebecca Cook does a fantastic job with the narration and the different voices- both male and female. I may have listened to a moderate number of audiobooks, but she's easily my favorite female female narrator.

Overall: 4.5 stars
Performance: 5 stars

A CAPTIVATING READ THAT I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED
I loved the book by Michelle M Pillow and I loved the charaters and the way she took so much time to give them full backgrounds and life story which makes all the difference to the story.
Kyra had feared water and for her to venture on the boat had been quite brave but she would do anything for her family. However, the sea voyage was to end in disaster and her family was lost the only reason she survived was because she was rescued by Rigel who was a Merr man.
As the years passed, she learned that she could never return home without dying and the time, care and love Rigel had shown his little fish was heart wrenching, you could actually fee Kyra’s distress.
This was a wonderful read as there was so many life lessons, I know that any other reader will enjoy this as much as myself.
I assure you that you will love every moment of this book it is simply a fantastic read.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the great writing.

I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this story, though I trust Pillow’s writing and knew the story would be good, whatever this new underwater world had to offer. I also knew that starting on book three of the series probably wasn’t the greatest idea, but I had hopes that I could figure things out. Happily, orienting myself in the story wasn’t a problem, and it is indeed a captivating world with intriguing characters and a LOT of promise. This story definitely leans more on the sexy-times side than the romantic, and at points the romantic development itself seemed a bit quick, but there is still a fulfilling, touching HEA at the end. I really enjoyed the individual points of view that really bring Rigel and Lyra to life, and the depth of the development of the city of Atlantes and the culture there, too. Overall, the story was a strongly characterized romance with intriguing world-building, and was an enjoyable enough read that I do plan to read the rest of the stories in the series.

Story: Rigel (H) rescues Lyra (h) after an underwater sea creatures, Scylla, attacks boat she's on with her family. A Mer (merman), Rigel must give his life saving breath to Lyra on their way to the underwater kingdom of Atlantes where he lives. Lyra blames Rigel and the Mer for the death of her family and even though she exudes hostility toward him, Rigel is patient and kind as she tries to adjust to her new life. As they get to know one another, Lyra eventually begins to thaw - plenty of hot and steamy action help them reach their HEA too. Loved this one and all the hot and steamy action, even if I did get peeved with Lyra at times.

Audio: The audiobook uses a single narrator for the story - which often causes me to complain about how much I dislike a female narrator trying to do male voices, but not the case this time! I actually really enjoyed the female narrator in this audiobook, and felt she did a really good job with both the female and male voices, as well as just the right inflection for Lyra.

This is the 3rd book in this series. It is Rigel the mer hunter and Lyra's story. At the beginning of the story Rigel saves Lyra when the ship she is on is attacked by a sea monster called the scylla. As Lyra's father and brothers were on the ship as well she believed them all to be dead when the ship sank. Rigel had his hands full when he brought her to his underwater home. Lyra was in mourning and angry with Rigel and his people believing that they had killed her family and angry he had saved her. Can Rigel convince Lyra that is not true and can she ever return the feelings that he has developed for her. Will she ever learn her familys true fate? If your curious you should check this story out. There is also a truth revealed about the origin of the scyllas and why the mermen hunted them I found enlightening as well. I thoroughly enjoyed this story. If you like similar themed storylines I recommend you check it out.

I have read the previous two books in the "Lords of the Abyss" series and have found this one very disappointing, and I think I know why. I read this book in a couple hours, which tells me it was a novella. It succumbed to the usual pitfalls of novellas; not enough time to create well-developed characters and rushing through events to bring the story to a conclusion within a reduced word count. As a result, I found Lyra to be a whiny brat. Yes, she thought she lost her entire family on the shipwreck but Rigel was so kind to her and she kept treating him so badly, screaming like a raving beeotch. She also had this weird love/hate relationship with him, screaming at him one minute and throwing her girly bits at him the next. The sex was too rushed-and there was LOTS of it. It was more like an erotic romp than a traditional fantasy romance. Maybe if the author had left out more sex scenes and developed Lyra's character better I would have enjoyed it more. Rigel deserved better and I wanted more for him.

Michelle M. Pillow's captivating paranormal merman romance "Captive of the Deep: Lords of the Abyss, Book 3" flips the classic Little Mermaid story on its head. A lonely and cursed merman warrior named Rigel saves Lyra, a stunning mortal woman, from the sea. They have to face the mysteries of Lyra's shipwreck and the curse that has befallen Rigel's people while they negotiate their tremendous desire.
Fans of paranormal merman adventures, rescue romances, and damsel-in-distress tales should not miss this narrative. Character development and complexity are strong points of the well-developed world-building. Rebecca Cook's narrative is superb; it vividly depicts the undersea environment and its inhabitants. "Captive of the Deep" is a novel take on a beloved story that makes for an engrossing and revitalizing listen. Rigel and Lyra have a scorching connection, and their romance is full of tension, passion, and tender moments.

I received a copy from Booksprout; this is my honest review.
-This one has a different take than the other two; Lyra is blaming everyone left and right for the death of her family, then she turns around and helps the one who's actually to blame because she thinks she knows everything. Yep.
-Lyra is more aggressive in bed than the other 2 women; however she loves to give back.
-I love Aidan; in all the books I always wish he gets the one for him.
-Rigel felt like he was lying to Lyra for not telling her about Nemus but I didn't see it. Rigel is the leader of his team but with Lyra it's like he shrunk.
-The part that bothered me the most was when Lyra asked Rigel to choose between her and the king. He chose her. I'm sorry but we don't need current events in romance books.
-The story is interesting but there are too many bed scenes that don't really add to the story. I would have liked to know how the ending came to be. Aidan would have helped here, I'm sure.

I am a full fledged Michelle M Pillow fan but this book disappointed me a little.
After the 2nd book, Commanding the Tides. I expected this to be full of sass, a hell raising human female, lots of humor, drama & of course a hot merman.
This book however was 99% sex. 1/3% humor provided mostly from the twins & the 2 guards, 1/3% drama & 1/3% BEST HEA IN A BOOK. Plus near the very end, Lyra acted more like a true Siren than human in one scene and after she slept, she was like herself again. Very strange. It was a little bit explained but not fully understandable. Here is a very positive: the epilogue was the BEST HEA!! It truly was heartwarming and had me in tears. Happy one
Please, please don't get me wrong, it's still a good book, just not what I personally was expecting. Maybe that's my reasoning for the harshness. Just take it with a grain of salt.
I still recommend this book. It IS worth a read and I read it in one sitting.

Rigel and Lyra's Story . . .

Lyra went on an ocean voyage and when she ends up in the sea, she is rescued by a Merman shapeshifter named Rigel. In the lost city of Atlantes under the ocean where Rigel lives, women are rare. So he was glad he could save this woman. However, Lyra blamed him for her family’s deaths! Despite the way she treats him, he remains kind and compassionate. Would she change her attitude toward him as she learned more? Could she envision a future with him, as she can never return “home” or she would die?

I liked the story line, but I didn’t particularly like the character Lyra. She was too volatile, unable to be grateful that someone cared enough to save her life. Then suddenly her behavior switches unrealistically. However, there is still enough going on to keep the story interesting, and Rigel is a sweetheart.

4 1/2 stars - Michelle M. Pillow wrote another captivating enjoyable story in this Lords of the Abyss series. Lyra Harne is helping her family business on a two month re-enactment Spanish Armanda voyage trip by their client. Unfortunately Lyra suffers from bad case of seasickness which reinforces her dislike of the ocean. Then the boat is pitched back and forth, attacked by the scylla's which throws Lyra into the ocean. Meanwhile Rigel the Hunter, Merr, has been hunting the scylla only to encounter another team hunting one. The scylla's attack and destroy the boat on the surface. Helping the humans to the surface Rigel saves Lyra who he finds resents him for the death of her family. When she finds out she can't go back home, what will happen between Rigel and Lyra? I volunteer to read and review this ARC I received via Booksprout.

Rigel, a merman from Atlantes is out hunting when Lyra is thrown from a boat that was attacked by a scylla. He protects her and brings her down to Atlantes. She at first blames him for the death of her family. Gradually she starts to learn of her fate and what is going on around her. Rigel and Lyra are mates so he tries hard to show her that life can be good there. Having the scylla locked up causes trouble at one point. Loved the message in the bottle idea. The characters were terrific, with great backstories and intense feeling, emotions, and mind reading. The storyline totally kept in entertained and eager to see what happened next. Lots of surprises and twists, like who the scylla was that died. Can not wait to read more about this group. The series is fantastic.

I enjoyed every bit of this third story in the "Lords of the Abyss" series. It is a stand alone read with some connected characters. The story is fast paced and starts out with a bang and ends with an unexpected surprise. This is a good story and I like the different take on Mer folk and Atlantis. I listened to the audiobook of this story and I thought the narrator did a good job reading. This is about Rigel and Lyra. He rescues her after the ship she and her family is on sinks. She is convinced he killed her family and he is the cause of the wreck. Slowly he wins her over but the real push is his lost brothers death. I love how the relationship grows and develops between them. This is a very interesting and intriguing story with drama, suspense, action and very hot and steamy scenes. The chemistry between the characters is off the charts and these two set the pages on flames.

Rigel is a hunter on the same team as his bothers Brutus and Demon. He rescues Lyra from a ship sunk by another Scylla. When she awakens, she is not happy to be in Atlantes. She is even unhappier when she finds that she can never leave. She is angry with the Merr, and Rigel in particular because she believes they killed her family. Can Rigel convince her otherwise? They are attracted, but will Lyra ever feel about Rigel the way he feels for her? This is another exciting story in the Lords of the Abyss series. There is danger, mistrust, and a lot of steam. There is also new and interesting information about the Scylla, and a surprise at the end that that may affect all of Atlantes in the future. I enjoyed Rebecca Cook’s narration.

Rigel and Lyra’s Story

Lyra is sailing with her family to deliver a ship to Spain. The ship is attacked by the Scylla and destroyed. She is rescued by Rigel and taken to their city under the sea, Atlantes. She is grieving for the loss of her family and refuses to speak. Rigel is her guardian and does everything he can think of to break through to her. Sometimes time is the best healer, and eventually she comes out of her silence. Imagine trying to adjust to life under the sea with no chance of ever going to the surface again.

This is the third book of the series. It is a little shorter than the first two but I loved hearing Lyra’s story. Apparently this isn’t the end of the series. Good news!

For Rigel being a merman is a lonely existence without a possible mate and with forever to dwell on that.
Women are extremely rare and usually mermen only mate if they rescue humans.
When a beautiful human is snatched by the waves, he knows she may not survive unless he intervenes.
This warrior was sent only to capture a monster that loves to destroy anything that floats but ended up losing his heart.

In this visit to Atlantes, we finally see Rigel's story and see his feelings and thoughts. With her way of life completely changing, Lyra is not as warm towards him as he is towards her.
Rigel has endured countless years alone and this woman reignited the flame in him but can she love him back?

Saving Love

Michelle M. Pillow’s third book in her ‘Lords of the Abyss’ series is still surging up the charts. This book is just swimming with emotions. Lyra was on a journey to help her family when their boat sank. Rigel, a merman, was able to save her but not her family. Lyra goes off on Rigel violently blaming him for her family’s death. No matter how mean she is to Rigel, he continues to be nothing but kind and helpful towards her. At first I hated Lyra’s character but then I put myself in her place. If I had tragically lost my whole family, I would be hurting and lashing out in pain. Anger is one of the stages of grief that people need to go through to finally achieve acceptance. I loved this book so much I couldn’t put it down. Highly recommended and definitely a MUST read.

Captive of the Deep was a short novella where we get to see what happened with Lyra.
The novella was short and filled with a lot of steamy pages. The spicy level is definitely high and we get to see how Lyra’s inhibitions change once she realizes she is underwater and around merman…especially when she is around Rigel. Their romance is very hot and heavy.
I really enjoyed the epilogue at the end. Especially the message in the bottle. It was sweet.
The narrator, Rebecca Cook did a wonderful performance and used a variety of pleasing tones and inflections to portray several characters. Very easy to follow along.
If you enjoy underwater paranormal romance with some smutty scenes, then check this series out.

Captive of the Deep is the third book in the Lords of the Abyss series by Michelle M. Pillow.

This is a fantasy and contemporary romance book.

This is the story between Rigel and Lyra. Rigel, a Mer, rescues Lyra after an underwater creature, Scylla, attacks the boat Lyra and her family was on. But due to her families deaths, she felt animosity towards him. However Rigel is patient with Lyra which causes confusing feelings in Lyra.

I listened to this on audible and it was a great experience. The emotional portrayal will captivate you and keep you on hold.

This is HEA which I am a sucker for. I enjoyed this series so much. I am not much into mer fantasy but this series is a good introduction to it.

Lyra was aboard a vessel taking her from Spain to America with her family.

Rigel and his crew were going after the scylla. There were two old ones working together. They were close by when the beasts smashed into the boat. Saving the humans were there duty. Rigel's team went after some while the other team went after the other scylla. Rigel saw movement, so he went after it. A woman. Lyra had been saved by a merman who suctioned his lips around hers and dragged her down into the midnight depths. She was aware the whole time. Angry that this happened to her. She saw her family thrown into the sea. She was confused and mad at everyone.

I loved this book by Michelle M. Pillow. Lyra hated the ocean but went on a voyage to help her family. Her boat was sunk and she was saved by a Merr named Rigel. Rigel was happy to save Lyra but she blamed him for her families deaths. I love how he helped her even after her screaming at him and kicking and hitting him. As time passed she learned that she could not ever go back home or she would die. Rigel helped her to find out if her family lived. I love how this book portrays family. I could not put this book down.

Book 3 of the series. Can easily be read as a stand-alone, but you will get more out of it as part of the series. Each book builds more and more of the back story of Atlantis. This is the story of Rigel and Lyra. Rigel, a hunter, saves Lyra from a ship wreck, caused by Scylla. Lyra rails against the injustice, and fears her whole family perished in the wreck. Contains some pretty steamy scenes. I enjoyed the story, and look forward to the next one. Narrator did a good job, felt the voices were distinctly different.

To sum this up in one word: disappointing.

This is like half the length of the previous two books, and is still called the final part to a trillogy. What a joke. Hardly any time given for plot, and it doesn't take long for the female lead to jump into the male's bed, anger issues aside. At the very least the Scylla are explained somewhat, but the Olympians aren't even mentioned and I thought they were the best part previously.

I really hope this isn't the end of this series, as it does have potential, so long as the author writes a decent length novel.

Disappointed that this story was too short to actually have a fleshed out plot. The little that is there only hints at the difficulties Lyra faces as being a human woman now stranded beneath the sea with no possible way home. And while her and Rigel share some incredibly sexy times, that does not resolve her anger issue - unless the sexiness completely re-arranges her emotional anger. I did enjoy the side plot of the threat by the scyllas. Hopefully in a following story these creatures will play a more prominent role.
