Led by Blade, they were seven hand-picked members of the Freedom Federation. Each was a volunteer because no one had the guts to order them to go anywhere; each alone was worth an army - together, they couldn’t be stopped.
The Mission....
Sanitize the Outlands of Oregon, which were under the rule of a vile race of mutants called the Reptiloids. Their diabolical leader had a taste for pitting humans against each other in Roman arena combat, and all the lizard-men had a taste for human flesh. They had rounded up all the men, women, and children in the territory and were preparing for a great feast - but what they didn’t know was that Blade was coming to dinner, and the special of the day was lizard stew.
“Outland Strike”, second in the 'First Strike series, is the first book all over again. Different baddies, same despicable behaviour. Someone really ought to teach them a lesson! In a post-Apocalyptic America mutants are common though largely living in their own scattered communities. As a general rule they hate humans, blaming them for the virtual destruction of the world. Most of the advanced cities have fallen but California, which avoided nuclear strikes, still retains much of its technology over a century later. And there you will find the 'Freedom Force' led by the seven-foot tall Blade. It's a small group of soldiers drawn from each of the factions with links to California. Its job is to solve problems fast and hard. An escapee from Grants Pass, Southwest Oregon, bring a harrowing story of misery and cannibalism of slaves under the control of the Reptilian. Not to fear, Blade and co. are on the way. Expect battle against overwhelming odds and some musings about the nature of things (mostly of the Darwinian variety, though Blade does try to argue for sweetness and light). TBH it is pretty dreadful stuff. As a teenager I probably would have lapped it up and gone back for more, but life is too short to read books as bad as this. 1 Star.
Awesome sequel involving reptilian adversaries battling the force members in a mission that quickly spirals out of control. Continuing with the third in the series- I'm hooked!
Companion to the Endworld series, A pulp series that I read through junior high and high school. Even then, I knew it was a formulaic series, but it was fun to read and having found them recently in a box from my parents' house, I am thinking of reading them again.
