Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort (31 January 1673 – 28 April 1716) was a French Roman Catholic priest and Confessor. He was known in his time as a preacher and was made a missionary apostolic by Pope Clement XI.
As well as preaching, Montfort found time to write a number of books which went on to become classic Catholic titles and influenced several popes. Montfort is known for his particular devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the practice of praying the Rosary.
Montfort is considered as one of the early writers in the field of Mariology. His most notable works regarding Marian devotions are contained in The Secret of Mary and the True Devotion to Mary.
The Roman Catholic Church, under the pontificate of Pope Pius XII canonized Montfort on July 20, 1947. A "founders statue" created by Giacomo Parisini is located in an upper niche of the south nave of Saint Peter's Basilica.
I've prayed the Marian consecrations by Fr. Gaitley ("33 Days to Morning Glory") and Fr. Gillespie ("Preparation for Total Consecration According to St. Louis de Montfort") and this one has to be the most thorough so far. "33 Days" felt better suited for a beginner in Marian devotion and "Preparation" was a bit more advanced but Fr. Libietis' work recognises how much violence (so to speak) we have to do to ourselves in order to beat out the impurities of our old lives and reform ourselves to the new. The strength of "Consecration to Mary" is not just in that it contextualises St. Louis de Montfort in Tradition but also that it uses more works of his to fortify a person's preparations. This will be my go-to recommendation for someone who wants to consecrate himself or renew his consecration with a thorough and thoughtful guide.
A how-to on thinking about Mary and the role she plays in the Christian life. "Mary is only a human being' he says. This statement puts the Roman perspective that Mary is honored and not worshiped into view and the Protestant arguement to the contrary at a rest. There's not a theological work that will punish you into liking and praying to Mary more than this. It's dense.
Will definitely be a multiply read book. Highly educational and informative, I was never bored with any portion or section of the consecration. I would, as this book does, also recommend reading St. Montfort's 'True Devotion to Mary' prior to going through with this. With that, I did enjoy this work, and found it more fulfilling than Gaitley's abbreviated version.
A great book for one's spiritual guidance for consecration to Our Blessed Mother Mary. It is shorter than other consecration reads but does not leave out anything that must be know and meditated on. Includes daily prayers, daily Gospel meditations, and much more. I will definitely read it again for the daily prayers and the Gospel reflections/meditations.
Anyone wishing to grow closer to Jesus though Mary, and who desires to go through St. Louis de Montfort's writings, would be well served by this book. All the supplemental writings and prayers are included in one place. A gem of a find!
