What are the disappointments in life?
Perhaps, like me, you have unmet superficial desires
perhaps it is achieving that certain position in the company
getting that high mark in a significant exam
Or maybe you are scarred by grief so profound that you can hardly talk about it
Or perhaps you're not so much disappointed as unmotivated
You have allowed the good and the not so good to hijack the best, and the passionate days of your early Christian life seem so long ago. Whatever the case may be, the issue is the same for all of us: is God enough?"

9 books8 followersRay Galea is an Anglican minister who leads the pastoral team at St Alban's Multicultural Bible Ministry at Rooty Hill in western Sydney. His special brief is to work cross-culturally among second-generation Mediterranean and Middle Eastern people in the region.
Ray grew up as a member of a devout Roman Catholic family, and played an active role as a boy in his local parish church. Prior to training for the ministry, Ray worked as a social worker in Wollongong for three years where he specialized in marriage and family counselling. He is a graduate from Moore Theological College. He is married to Sandy and they have has three children: James, Amy and Madeleine. He has recently authored the book Nothing in My Hand I Bring (Matthias Media, 2008) which has become a focus of interest in the lead-up to Pope Benedict's visit to Sydney in July for Catholic World Youth Day.

This was my holiday devotional while off work for a couple of weeks recently - refreshing, entertaining, personal, profound. I'd happily recommend it.

Sometimes I think we can really underestimate how much the psalms can teach us about God. We look only to the cross for our picture of God's mercy and love, forgetting that we can see that mercy and love throughout the old testament. The Psalms give us a strong picture of who God is - his love, his justice, his anger, his mercy. They tell of the wondrous way he cares for his creation and plans for the salvation of his people.
The Psalms are also intensely practical - even for life in our modern age. They teach us how to pray to God, to praise him, and to be honest with him. They teach us the value of spreading the good news of his works - all the things he has done throughout history to save us culminating with Jesus on the cross.
Ray Galea has definitely brought me back to the importance of the Psalms and careful reflection of them. Encouraging readers to read through each Psalm twice before reading what Ray has to say about it places the importance of God's words over that of the author and allows time for your own peaceful reflection before being encouraged and taught by Ray.
This will be one of those books I return to every couple of years to get me started into reading the Psalms again. It will also be going on the Christmas list for several friends and family members!

This is a reflection on ten psalms that remind us that there is nothing on earth to desire besides God. He encourages the reader to read through each psalm several times before reading the chapter on each psalm. He features Psalm 2,8,15,19,22,51,73,78,90, and 139.

Very good book going through a number of Psalms. Well written and thought out book... I like the way the book ended "Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire beside you."

What a simple and clear book stating a timeless truth, that GOD IS TRULY ENOUGH! As I struggle with day to day problems that may never in this life be resolved, God remains enough for me. To stop say what if this happens and start saying even if the worst happens, yes, God is Enough. Recommended to all Christians no matter how long they've walked with their Lord, its always a great reminder. I love the path Ray weaves through the psalms to draw us back and fix our eye on to the truth, Jesus Christ.

This book requires more reflection and meditation than I allocated it. Ray's style is so natural and easy to read that it's easy to glide over the text without letting it sink in. But it is fantastic at bringing home the truths of God and the gospel from the Psalms. Psalm 139, 73 and 90 were some highlights, but the whole book is very refreshing.

3 1/2 stars. A helpful look at some of the Psalms with the aim of refocusing your life on God rather than yourself or your false heroes.
