An introduction to Carmelite spirituality that focuses on two major moments in the Carmelite the beginnings of the Carmelite Order in the thirteenth century and the reform of the order by Teresa of Avila in the sixteenth century. †
An outstanding and, at times, inspiring book. John communicates some interesting insights into Carmelite history and the rise and fall and rise of the Order.
"The history of the Carmelites...is a lesson about the danger of human hubris and the consequences of neglecting essential values; it is also a testimony to the human spirit, which has the capability of going once more to the well of its imagination and drawing up an image of what once was and what still could be."
That's at the beginning of Chapter 1. Naturally I had to read on!
This is another book I keep coming back to and frequently reference.
