His Every Kiss is the second book in the Guilty series by Laura Lee Guhrke.
I enjoyed this book as well but not as much as the 1st book in the series. It still had great characterization, great writing and the plot of the book was well done.

Dylan Moore, is a brilliant composer but he’s a tormented soul due to an accident that happened one day while riding his horse on Rotten Row. He uses pleasure and reckless behavior to make his torment go away.

One night, he decides to end his life and Grace Cheval was there to save him. This happens in the 1st chapter of the book so I’m not giving anything away with this part of the story.
He doesn’t see Grace until 5 years later and wants her to be his muse for his music. Grace wants nothing to do with Dylan or that type of relationship since she was the wife of a famous painter. One tormented artist is enough for her and no thank you! Hahaha

This is a sweet, redemption story of a brilliant musician, a wonderful and loving woman and a feisty and independent little girl that ends up saving Dylan more then he was prepared for.

Just lost my review! It was an OK read. Really dragged about halfway through.

Not sure the hero really redeemed himself. Bit to much of a rushed ending where she forgave him way too easily.

Once when I was a kid and before the advent of Tylenol, I had a super-bad headache and took too many aspirin. My ears rang for almost a whole day afterward. A high-pitched, buzzing, annoying "ching"-like noise that drove me bonkers.

Dylan Moore has heard that same noise continually for years. A fall from a galloping horse, a smack of his skull against a rock and presto! The doctors tell him the bells shall ring in his brain for the rest of his life. For a piano virtuoso/composer/conductor this is catastrophic. He can't sleep, he can't compose, he can't drink, smoke or whore the noise away. For a tortured hero affliction, this one kicks ass.

Our story opens with our Hero, desperate to end his agony, holding a pistol under his jaw in a theatre that used to play his symphonies. He is interrupted by the charwoman cleaning the theatre who persuades him not to do it; she will have to clean up after him, she says, and that sort of mess doesn't come out of wood. She leaves the theatre, taking with her his pistol and the impetus for him to end his life. He doesn't even know her name.

Cut to five years later. Dylan sees her playing violin at a ball and recognizes her immediately. He believes her to be his muse -- for only when he sees her can he hear anything other than the endless ringing in his ears. She is the key to unlocking the music in his head, he thinks, and pursues her.

The heroine, Grace Cheval, was ruined in the eyes of her family when she eloped with a famous French painter at 17. Years later Etienne is dead and Grace is eking out a meager existence by selling oranges and disguising herself as a man to play violin in a quartet. She has never forgotten her encounter with Dylan at the theatre, but had already spent years putting up with a tortured artist. Being a muse to a painter was quite enough, she thinks. The muse is blamed when the creative spark is gone, and she has no desire to be put on that pedestal.

Dylan's life as a self-absorbed, self-indulged artiste takes another turn when he is presented with an 8-yr-old daughter he never knew existed. Her mother has died and Dylan finds this a perfect way to have Grace -- a governess to his daughter, a muse for his talent, and a mistress for himself.

Their story is a quiet, emotion-filled one of love and redemption. It wasn't all sweeping, grand gestures and flowery speeches. For all the excitement of new love, there is the bittersweet goodbye to love that has died, and the dreams that died with it. There is jealousy, and cruel words, and heartbreak. There were a couple of scenes in the book where I was pretty sure I didn't like the Hero at all. Then it occurred to me that his behaviour was the closest to real life that I've read in a while. That's what their relationship was -- real. Most of us IRL don't realize what we have until we've lost it; nor do we recognize our flaws until it's almost too late to fix the damage we've done.

A much more serious book than the first in the series, (Guilty Pleasures), this one is definitely worth-reading - especially if you like tortured types and a bit of an angsty read.

One last thing: although this book is part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone. Guhrke is doing an OUTSTANDING job of loosely tying the characters together - they slip in and out of each other's stories, always on the periphery, never intruding into the main book. I'd love to give the book 5 stars just for that.

Believable plot,  well-formed characters, cohesive, strong ending, likable hero. No extra plot lines required to make it dramatic. The author writes the characters beautifully.

Full break down on what my ratings above mean here:

Should I read in order?
I did read book 1 and don’t think it’s necessary to read in order here.

Basic plot:
After Grace saves Dylan’s life, he hasn’t been able to get her out of his head. When their paths cross again, he finds an opportunity to have her stay with him as his daughter’s governess.

Give this a try if you want:
- Late Georgian (1832)
- London and country setting
- musically inclined mains
- widow/governess heroine
- child in the story
- lower steam – 1 full scene but some additional shorter/vague scenes

My thoughts:
I wanted to love this one so badly! I really enjoyed the first book of the series. But this one was a trial for me to get through and overall I wasn’t a big fan.

I didn’t find myself liking either character for the most part, but especially the hero. It’s a bit of a heavier book to me – the hero deals with thoughts of suicide and really suffered from mood swings. The heroine has a lot of emotional baggage from her past.

We through in a child in the story, which isn’t my favorite on a good day, and I found the relationship itself got a bit lost for me in all of this.

There were a few really cute/sweet scenes I appreciated. And I definitely got my heart engaged a bit at the end with the all is lost moment – but ultimately this happened at the VERY END of the book and I had to slog through it to get there. And the fact that it was all happening at the very end made their HEA feel unsatisfying to me. It left me doubting that everything was resolved with them. Overall this is not one I would reread or return to.

Isabel irritated me with her behavior. I understood where she was coming for but her constant talk-backs at the beginning, especially as a nine year old was bit too much for me.

Overall it was good, Grace was very nice and Dylan was also bearable most of the time but it genuinely annoyed me when he visited a brothel after making out with Grace. I couldn’t help thinking, can’t you control yourself, man? (Well, men can’t control themselves, period.)
This book was mostly bearable and the plot was unique even though bit draggy at times.

Pre-read~I love the feeling when I randomly discover a book series, and I fly through it~ 😺

ahhhhh this is not an easy review to write for me.

The composer and music theme is absolutely ingenius. I loved that. I am not sure how much of a musical background Laura Lee Guhrke has. But I think she did a very good job depicting the agony of disrupted creative energy, the burning need of self-expression of artists and people of an artistic nature. Why are artists mostly wretchly tormented? The heroine asked that question. Because when you have a soul that is so full of images, thoughts, feelings and emotions, when your mind has aetenna, which receive all the messages, verbalized or silent, regardless of whether you want them, you need an outlet. If not, you go a little nuts and seem like a crazy person. Laura Lee Guhrke did really well in terms of fleshing out Dylan Moore, the disturbed composer, the hero in the book. For this, I would give this book 4 stars.

But it is a romance novel and the romance is sorely lacking. I thought it a really cool idea to use the 'musical genius looking for his muse" ruse as a base for the story. At about 30%, the book started its descend. So Dylan got Grace, supposedly his muse into his house with a daugther who was dropped on him like a bomb mere days ago. The "artisitc struggle" sort of went out of the window. He did still struggle but with what, I do not know. He is supposed to be a great musician, a tormented artist who abuses pleasure to fulfill whatever void he feels inside because he is unable to express himself through music. The characterization was great in the first 30%, but became almost invisisble after that.

Grace the muse, I have no idea what about her inspired such artistic inspirations. She had a husband, who was a artist. LIke many relationships with artists, the flame is strong and you get burned. He called her his muse and blamed her for he had the "artist's block". All rather real I have to say. Her husband died and her situation was destitute. Fast forward 5 years ago, a younger Grace saved Dylan from commiting suicide and Dylan somehow believed that she was his muse. They met each other again 5 years later. And Dylan pursued her because he thought she could help him. Naturally, she was not a fan to that idea, not interested in being any man's muse ever again.

I gotta say, plotline is not bad. But the story has no romance. I see obsession, artistic agony, self-indulgence, one tormented artist, an ordinary woman who seemed to be Helen of Troy to artists, and one very annoying little girl. For the poor execution, I want to give 2 stars.

So here I am. Tortured. Torn between 2 and 4 stars. I understand the artistic burning and really appreciate the attempt at bringing that into light. But it is a romance novel. It sucked in the romance department.

I am going with the lower rating this time. I like my romance stories with a heavy focus on romance and love. If I was looking for a fiction which illustrates an artist's search of inner peace, I would not have picked a romance novel.

p.s.: I really must avoid books featuring children, especially when they are children of the lead characters. I always feel like I want to slap them. I could never tolerate a willful child who throws tantrums. I am one of those people who would walk away from a crying child. Cry all you want. We will talk when you are ready for reasons.

Downgraded from 3 stars to 1 star. I don't support zionists. See here.

This is actually a very well written story with well rounded characters. I found it a bit slow and I wasn't as invested in the couple as I was in the first book, Guilty Pleasures. The story was predictable and the romance was just okay.

This is a fantastic book for those who are just getting started in the HR genre, but I've read so many similar stories like this one that it kind of just went over my head. This obviously has everything to do with me and nothing to do with LLG's writing because she's a fantastic writer. For instance, I have no musical ability whatsoever, but LLG did a great job with writing the musical aspect of the story. I never found myself bored with it and I was able to understand Dylan through his music.

I plan on continuing this series. I am curious about the Hammonds and I love Sir Ian.

Dylan Moore is a renowned Pianist, Composer and conducter who lives for his music. After a fall from a horse he has a constant noise in his head and ringing in his ears (tinnitus?), he can no longer feel the music and cant compose anymore. He cannot sleep right so spends his nights drinking and whoring and lives on the edge. One night he decides to commit suicide but is stalled by girl playing a violin (Grace Cheval) and for a brief moment while talking to her his music returns. Thinking she is his muse he looks for her but does not find her for 5 years. Meanwhile he is stunned by an daughter (8) that he never knew about, just lands on his doorstep. He hires Grace to be her governess hoping she will inspire him to write and hopefully he will make the beautiful Grace his mistress.

Grace Cheval eloped tears earlier with an older man, a renowned artist when she was 17 plummeting her family into disgrace. Though they were much in love and happy it ended badly. Now she is a widow and has sworn that she will never fall for the artistic tortured type again.

I loved Dylan the dark broody tortured hero. A dark hero that for once is believable, he has a selfish devil may care attitude and sometimes abrupt and hurtful but LLG also shows his vunerable and caring side wonderfully. A Glorious Hero. Grace was a passionate woman that fought every kiss afraid of getting hurt again. My only gripe is that I would haved loved an epilogue .

OMG. I adored this book! I loved it! Such a great read! I couldn’t put it down.

Dylan Moore is the kind of hero that you just can’t help but fall in love with. We first met him as a tortured and depressed man wanting to end his life. Then a woman appeared and stopped him from killing himself. Dylan Moore has been haunted by a memory of that woman for five years, looking for her, wanting to see her again to ensure she was real.

Grace Cheval is my favorite heroine. Pretty, smart, independent, and strong. And she never forgets the day she saved Dylan Moore and believes that she will never see him again. Then they met again.

And Dylan has no intention of letting his angel slip away from him again. So he made her an offer she couldn’t refuse. She made her the governess of his newfound daughter and offered her to be his mistress and his muse.

As things heat up between them, Grace finds herself falling for both a man and his daughter, fearing her past is doomed to repeat itself. But Dylan proved himself by being a good father to his daughter and showing the real him to Grace.

There was a time when I wanted to smack Dylan for hurting and not trusting Grace. But I’m glad that he realized his mistakes sooner and went out to set them right. As for Grace, I adored her, for she was a brave woman who went after what she wanted regardless of what people thought.

And what I really liked about this book is that, despite Moore's dark, brooding persona, I found myself liking him and giggling and rolling my eyes towards the end when he is pathetically groveling on the ground. It was so sweet, funny, and giddy!

You must read this book to learn more about Dylan and Grace's love story and how they end up. It's a story you don't want to miss.

Ooh, I remember this one! I've been wondering how to identify this off-beat romance, pairing a tormented musician with a genteel young woman who's been reduced to sweeping floors. I recall this as a beautiful balance of heartbreak and sweetness. Now that I've found it, it's going on my reread list, which at this point should be completed sometime in 2029. Recommended when you're in the mood for some angst but aren't downright suicidal about it (for that, we have Meagan McKinney.) Enjoy.

I always enjoy Laura Lee Guhrke's books, and this one is no exception. This story is quiet, without great drama, but with a sweet feeling of love growing between the hero and heroine. The "secondary" love story is one of a brilliant, self-absorbed man falling in love with the eight-year-old daughter that he never knew he had.

Nicely done historical romance novel. Above average. Good storytelling.

STORY BRIEF:
Dylan was a brilliant pianist and composer. After a riding accident, he had tinnitus which caused a continuous whining, screeching sound in his ears. He was no longer able to compose music and found it hard to sleep at night. So he lived a wild life of gambling, drugs and women until he met Grace. When he was with her, the sound was less painful and at times he could hear music in his head again. Although Grace had been disgraced and destitute, she refused to be his mistress, so he hired her to be a governess to his daughter. The daughter was from an affair eight years earlier. He didn’t know he had a daughter until recently, when she was brought to him after her mother died.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
A damaged composer finding his muse was an interesting plot. I enjoyed the development of the relationship between Dylan and his newfound daughter Isabel and how it changed them. One reviewer was unhappy with Dylan doing something cruel to Grace. I kind of agree, but I could accept it for the sake of the story. He made a poor decision based on confused emotions. I had no major problems with the story. If you’re looking for a traditional historical romance novel, this should satisfy.

Minor annoyance: The cover picture did not match the content. Dylan had shoulder length hair. The guy in the picture has short hair. Throughout the story, Grace was dressed in governess-style clothing and threadbare day dresses. The cover girl is wearing an evening gown with fancy jewelry.

DATA:
Story length: 370 pages. Swearing language: moderate. Sexual language: moderate. Number of sex scenes: 4. Total number of sex scene pages: 15. Setting 1827 and 1832 London and Devonshire, England, and Wales. Copyright: 2004. Genre: historical romance.

So my first Guhrke book was "And Then He Kissed Her" which is great by the way...and now I've proceeded to go and try to read her backlist. Guilty Pleasures was a big disappointment and now this...maybe the Marriage Bed will be better.

My main problems with this book are as follows:
* I never really believed that Dylan loved Grace....more that he just used her for his own selfish needs and wants.
* I never really believed that Grace loved Dylan...more that she wanted what his wealth could give her.....yuck!
* I went back and forth on whether I liked Isabel or not. I tend to either like what a child adds to a story line, or I hate it...I just couldn't decide about this one.
* I'm all for hero's that are plagued with physical aliments, but Dylan's was so cruel....I was hoping for a miraculous healing...

Basically, I just never got hooked into this story. I didn't like the characters enough to really care what happened to them. I am looking forward to the next book in the series as this author tackles an adulterous, playboy of a husband, and his wounded, angry wife.

It's a quick read so it doesn't drag on, but in good conscience... I can't recommend it.

His Every Kiss
4 Stars

On the darkest night of his life, renowned composer Dylan Moore encounters a woman who glimpses his torment and comes to his aid. Before he has the opportunity to thank her, she vanishes and Dylan is left wondering if she was only a dream. Grace Cheval is only too aware of what being the muse of a gifted artist is like and has no desire to return to such a life. But alone and destitute, Grace is forced to accept the position of governess to Dylan Moore's daughter even though she is well aware of his ulterior motives. Will Dylan and Grace be able to set aside their differences and find happiness together?

Like Anthony and Daphne in book #1, Grace and Dylan's romance does not get off to an auspicious start. He is a reckless rake for whom women are nothing more than warm bodies - he can't even remember the mother of his child! Grace isn't much better - her selfish actions before the events of the book have had disastrous consequences for her family. Nevertheless, these are two damaged individuals who demonstrate that it is possible to grow, change and become better people.

Dylan's precocious daughter, Isobel, is adorable. The inclusion of children from previous relationships is not usually a trope I enjoy, but Isobel is such an integral part of Dylan's redemption and his connection with Grace that the romance would not work without her.

The descriptions of Dylan's debilitating tinnitus are convincing and go a long way toward understanding his behavior. Kudos to Gurhke for not resolving the issue with a miraculous cure but rather finding a way for Dylan to reconcile with and work around his disability.

In sum, a satisfying romance with interesting characters. The next book focuses on the broken marriage of Anthony's sister and Dylan's friend - how will Gurhke reconcile these two angry people?

Waffling between 3 and 4 stars, bumping up because of the quality of Guhrke’s writing. Would I re-read this? No.
Maybe I’m just too soft-hearted, but the third act breakup wounded me. Grace has been THROUGH THE WRINGER and damnit, did we need to have the hero (metaphorically) gut-punch her? Dylan does a nice apology but can I classify it as quality groveling? Is there ever enough groveling to satisfy me??
I actually loved how Guhrke doesn’t shy away from portraying a deeply flawed hero, but I don’t think a HEA with Dylan qualifies as a sufficient reward for her suffering. I suppose Grace has a thing for tortured artist types, and the heart wants what the heart wants.

Opinião no blogue Chaise Longue: http://girlinchaiselongue.blogspot.pt...
