Cailan Bane is a hunter. Dressed as a homeless bum, he roams the streets at night looking for the scumbags who victimize others. After his intervention, would-be rapists, robbers, and muggers end up either dead or crippled for life. But on one of his hunts, he encountered an old Asian man shuffling down the street, leaning on a thick black staff. His clothes were worn, yet his shoes were Ryder sneakers made from military-grade Kevlar and equipped with steel toes. When five young white men try to mug the old man, Cailan watches in awe as he leaves four of them dead and the fifth imitating Usain Bolt, running for his life. Even more surprising was the old man’s exit from the scene. He hopped on the hood of a car, jumped to the roof of a truck then leaped across an alley to the roof of a neighboring building and disappeared.
Over the next two weeks, six young toughs and a major international sex trafficker meet similar fates. In each case the killer’s appearance is different, but his sneakers and staff are the same. Cailan realizes a human chameleon has joined his pest control efforts. Like his counterpart, Cailan usually works alone, but when a white nationalist militia starts attacking Latin gangs with no regard for collateral damage, Cailan decides it’s time to seek help from his doppelganger who calls himself The Night Dancer.
