Kitty L. Kielland (1843-1914) is among Norway's most important artists from the 19th century. She was a pioneer in several areas. Kielland was one of the first outdoor painters. She is best known as the founder of iron painting and for having introduced the neo-romanticism into Norwegian painting. Before her contemporary colleagues, she painted interior portraits based on the principles of outdoor painting. As an outdoor painter, Kielland took the sketch box with him and explored windswept landscapes on Jæren, forests in northern France, quiet ponds in eastern Norway and Norwegian high mountains. Eventually she set up large canvases and was one of the first artists to paint finished pictures in front of the motif. Kielland created its own place in the story of the Norwegian landscape, a story the men until then had been alone in constructing. With a brush and pen, Kielland made his way to the men's arena both in the landscape space and in the public discourse. She was a fearless public debater, writing short stories, articles and newspaper articles about gender equality, morality and art.
