Zach's Law

Rate this book
From New York Times bestselling author Kay Hooper comes a classic love story about a man who lives by his own strict code—and the headstrong woman who’s determined to crack it.

When car trouble leaves her stranded in a deserted corner of the Rockies, love is the last thing on Teddy Tyler’s mind. But there’s no denying the attraction that grips her the minute she lays eyes on Zach Steele, a rugged security expert staking out a gang of gunrunners in a remote mountain cabin. Zach has survived this long by adhering to a few simple Travel light, travel fast, and travel alone. Now, to keep from blowing his cover, he must hold Teddy hostage for a week—if, that is, he can keep at bay his own simmering feelings for her.

Teddy’s not that easily confined, especially when her man’s in danger. So when a simple surveillance job turns into a deadly game of cat-and-mouse, she must convince the original lone wolf to let her help—or see their chance at love fall prey to one of Zach’s deadliest enemies.

Kay Hooper (aka Kay Robbins) was born in California, in an air force base hospital since her father was stationed there at the time. The family moved back to North Carolina shortly afterward, so she was raised and went to school there.

The oldest of three children, Kay has a brother two years younger and a sister seven years younger. Her father and brother are builders who own a highly respected construction company, and her mother worked for many years in personnel management before becoming Kay's personal assistant, a position she held until her untimely death in March 2002. Kay's sister Linda works as her Business Manager, Events Coordinator, and is playing a major role in the creation and operation of The Kay Hooper Foundation.

Kay graduated from East Rutherford High School and attended Isothermal Community College — where she quickly discovered that business classes did not in any way enthrall her. Switching to more involving courses such as history and literature, she also began to concentrate on writing, which had been a longtime interest. Very quickly hooked, she asked for a Christmas typewriter and began seriously working on her first novel. That book, a Regency romance titled Lady Thief, sold to Dell Publishing in 1980. She has since published more than 60 novels and four novellas.

Kay is single and lives in a very small town in North Carolina, not far from her father and siblings. Deigning to live with her are a flock of cats — Bonnie, Ginger, Oscar, Tuffy, Felix, Renny, and Isabel — of various personalities who all like sleeping on manuscripts and whatever research happens to be spread across Kay's desk. And living amongst the many felines are two cheerfully tolerant dogs, a shelter rescue, Bandit, who looks rather like a small sheepdog, and a Sheltie named Lizzie.

"Zach's Law" is the story of Zach and Teddy.
When Teddy's car breaks down on a deserted road, she never expects that she would be rescued and abducted by a mercenary known as Zach, or that she would fall in love with him!
Zach has suffered at the hands of another woman, and does not allow anyone to come close to his heart. When Teddy falls for him, he continually pushes her away, despite her pleading. Will Teddy finally give up, or will Zach eventually give in..is the story.
If you like a heroine in pursuit, this book is for you. The hero has a scarred past, and hence does not want to let anyone into his life. The heroine spends most of the book begging for her to let him in, and it is her who eventually gives in and goes after him. If he was a little more cooperative and grovel-some, this would have been a 5 star read. Good on mystery quotient.

So I read this book as a joke (all of my co-workers are reading it) and I was cringing by page 5. But I finished it and had a few good laughs and didn't altogether regret the 1 1/2 hours I spent reading it...

This was one of those books that makes me think that I should write because I could certainly write something better. The plot was flat, the characters boring, and the writing poor. I don't think I will bother with this author again.

Disappointing!! Be prepared to be shocked, confused, annoyed and what not when you read this book. At some point you will feel sorry for yourself for having picked this book from a whole host of other options!!

Actually, I didn't finish it. I figured by page 55 they were about to have sex with only knowing each other for about 12 hours or so and most of that she was sleeping. Then by page 97 she was telling him that she loved him. Plus other things going on in the book, it was distracting and not written well at all. This is the first book I read (or tried to read) from this author. I will look at reviews before I pick up another of Kay Hooper's books.

Despite needing to exert any effort to listen to this on CD I was unable to finish it. I detected infinitesimal forward movement in a plot and it felt like a romance novel. Maybe that was Hooper's intent, but I've moved beyond that genre (about 20 years ago). I love Kay Hooper's paranormal books, so don't judge the author by this title alone.

This is a light read with no real substance. The criminal element is a side line that we never get to know if it gets closed and the bad guy gets caught and put out of business. Thus is a big flaw for me. It's the love story that leads the plot. I laughed a lot which is good medicine after a lot of books that are high octane.

I picked up Zach’s Law as part of a reading challenge that required a title starting with the letter “Z.” This early work by Kay Hooper is a light, enjoyable read that blends romance with a touch of suspense.

The story begins when Teddy’s car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, leaving her stranded and vulnerable. Enter Zach—a man who initially seems intimidating but quickly proves to be protective and trustworthy. Their interactions form the heart of the book, offering a sweet dynamic that fans of romantic suspense will appreciate.

For longtime Hooper readers, this novel provides an interesting glimpse into her early writing style. It’s far lighter and less complex than her later works, such as the Bishop series, which are known for their depth and intensity. Personally, I enjoy revisiting these early titles to see how authors evolve and refine their craft over time.

If you’re looking for a quick, pleasant escape rather than a deeply layered thriller, Zach’s Law is a solid choice. It’s perfect for fans of gentle romantic suspense or anyone seeking a break from heavier, more intense reads.

This book fulfills the stereotype about romance that non romance readers have. I didn't hate the situation the characters found themselves in, and I liked the friend group. However, this was so insta love, and the conflict with Zach was just over the top and not very believable. Also, do these characters not know how biology works? They are together less than a week, and she has to know her period is due (not to mention that she tells him it is next to impossible for her to get pregnant) , but she is sooooo disappointed that she isn't pregnant when her period starts at the end of their week together. I am glad the author didn't go down that route, but seriously, the whole thing was just a bit ridiculous. The story would have been better without the romance, which being a romance book is saying something.

Teddy’s car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. When she exits the car she is surprised when a stranger takes her and sinks her car. Zach is trying to stay hidden from some thief’s up the way and can’t afford Teddy alerting the bad guys to their location. It’s a quick romance that one is ready to explore and the other is scared to repeat the past. In the end after all the dust settles, will these two find their happy ever after?

Kay Hooper's writing is a delight; an ice cream cone with a caramel center.

I am really fortunate to have discovered Ms. Hooper's many books. This series is so worthy of rereading and is as enjoyable now as it was several years ago.

These aren't as good as I remember them being. I think I'm more cynical now, and the whole love at first sight thing just breaks my suspension of disbelief. I still like the characters.

My rating may have been impacted by the fact that I jumped in to a series in the middle without reading prior books.

Always guaranteed a great read with this author, and this book was no different. Excellent storytelling and a nice mix of romance and thriller. Love Kay Hoopers writing.

Another what I call vintage romance as it was published in the 1980's by LoveSwept by Kay Hooper. It was ok but was very much the serial romance that it was first published as. Enough so that I probably will not read the next in the series. If you love Kay Hooper this is a good book for you, but for me it was just ok.

Zach's Law

Love the Hero of this Book

"She wanted Zach. It sounded so simple, but everything she felt told her it wasn't. She wanted to sob, to laugh, to cry out wildly in order to release whatever was tearing at her to get out. She wanted to hold on tightly to Zach because he would anchor her in the chaos of a world gone mad."

FINAL DECISION: This is one of my all time favorite books. The characters are larger than life, the story is unrealistic, but I love the strong connection between the characters and the swift resolution of the story.

THE STORY: Zach Steele, the head of security for a billionaire, has been convinced by Hagen, the head of a secret government agency, that he has an assignment that just cries out for his talents. Out in the middle of nowhere, Hagen believes that he has finally gotten around his unwanted ability to make matches for his agents. Unexpectedly, Teddy Tyler, an animal control officer for the city of San Francisco, arrives in the area as she travel cross country. Her car dies on the road and she runs into Zach Steele. Temporary held hostage by Zach, Teddy knows immediately that he will be special to her. Unfortunately, Zach has dealt with an inexperienced woman falling in "love" with him in stressful circumstances before. He is determined to now allow his heart to be broken again.

OPINION: I love this book. Teddy is spunky but strong willed and different than what she first appears. She is quirky and I loved how she deals with the stubborn Zach. One of the best parts of these books is how active the women are to the resolution of the activities the men are engaged in. Honestly, however, my favorite hero of the series is Zach. Strong, loyal, determined and hurt in the past, he finds Teddy irresistible. Despite his determination to avoid entanglements with her, he is helpless before this woman. Their romance is at times a bit sad, but the story never goes too deep into the darkness. Written as a category romance in the 1980s, this book is not particularly deep, but is filled with characters that are bigger than life with incredible situations. Realistic it is not, but I like it anyway because the story is ultimately fun and well written.

WORTH MENTIONING: Once again the other couples from the prior books in the series make significant appearances here.

CONNECTED BOOKS: ZACH'S LAW is book three of the Hagen series (sometimes the first book is listed as SERENA'S WEB but that book is really a prequel to the series).

STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.

Definitely one of Hooper's earlier works, this sweet love story crammed a lot of information and situations into a short book. Typical of this type of romance book, the characters met and fell in love in a very short amount of time, and were rather two-dimensional.

Narrated by Rebecca Gibel - Narration 4*s

Reviewed for AAR's Speaking of Audiobooks 8/29/11 http://www.likesbooks.com/blog/?p=6924

The good news is that if you’re a fan of Kay Hooper’s old category romances, narrator Rebecca Gibel is very good. She provides a number of distinct voices for the variety of characters that populate this adventure. As is common, the men could have used deeper voices but distinct is the next best thing. Gibel’s pacing is excellent as is the range of emotions she covers. I felt she had an excellent handle on the feel of Zach’s Law.

Unfortunately, the feel of the story was not to my liking. Zach Steele is staking out gun runners in the Rocky Mountains when Theodora (call me Teddy) Tyler’s car dies nearby. Zach gags her, ties her to a tree, rolls her car into a lake, then hauls her back to his cabin to prevent her from revealing his set up. Twelve hours later they’re half naked together. An hour after that Teddy knows, due to a Scottish ancestor with the second sight, that she’s in love with Zach. Then you add in several amazing coincidences and a romance is born? Not even I can buy this one!

The action scenes and the other agents becoming involved, along with the eventual conclusion, is okay if you discount the above. I discovered after finishing Zach’s Law that it is one of a running series that features Hagen, a man manipulating events to get the staring couple together. With that foreknowledge, the coincidences may not have seemed so ridiculous but the sudden jump from kidnapped to I love you was a deal breaker.
