About the author

Patrick Quentin, Q. Patrick and Jonathan Stagge were pen names under which Hugh Callingham Wheeler (19 March 1912 – 26 July 1987), Richard Wilson Webb (August 1901 – December 1966), Martha Mott Kelley (30 April 1906–2005) and Mary Louise White Aswell (3 June 1902 – 24 December 1984) wrote detective fiction. In some foreign countries their books have been published under the variant Quentin Patrick. Most of the stories were written by Webb and Wheeler in collaboration, or by Wheeler alone. Their most famous creation is the amateur sleuth Peter Duluth. In 1963, the story collection The Ordeal of Mrs. Snow was given a Special Edgar Award by the Mystery Writers of America.

Early Bird Book Deal | Farce. Fun if you can get in the mood for it, but characters don't behave like actual humans | I can't read the books in this series one after another without reading something else in between as a palate cleanser, because they're so ridiculous, but when I do read them I enjoy it. Anyway, the best description I can give this is simply the Oxford definition of farce: "a comic dramatic work using buffoonery and horseplay and typically including crude characterization and ludicrously improbable situations."

Člověk se stále objevuje nové informace. Když mě mé nutkání tlačilo přečíst všechno, co u nás vyšlo od Patricka Quentina (nebo též Quentina Patricka, ne, tyhle pseudonymy se fakt nepletou), při čtení doslovu jsem s překvapením zjistil, že hlavní osobnost tohohle pohyblivého týmu, Hugh Wheeler, na stará kolena detektivky opustil a začal psát divadelní hry a muzikály… včetně fakt skvělého Sweeney Todda, kterého považuju za parádně vystavěnou tragédii. Můj respekt k němu ještě vzrostl.

Ale zpátky ke knížkám. Záhada pro boháče je už čtvrtá kniha ze série s Peterem Duluthem. S manželkou jsou pozvaní k přítelkyni, která bohužel pozvala i tři rozvádějící se manželství, aby je dala dohromady. Což moc nevyjde a v domě dojde k něčemu, co by se dalo nejlíp definovat jako staromódní anglická vyvražďovačka. Každá delší kapitola je pojmenovaná jménem jedné ženy, která to během té kapitoly koupí. Od první, kterou měl důvod zabít snad úplně každý, přejdeme k ostatním, kde už tolik podezřelých není. A počet mrtvých stále stoupá. Až se zdá, že se z toho stane čisté pánská jízda.

Jako obvykle, i tady policie do děje moc nezasahuje a první mrtvoly jsou odbyté čistě jako přirozené smrti či nešťastné náhody. A jako obvykle, ani tady hlavní hrdina příliš neboduje… a spíš jen sleduje, jak všichni ostatní lžou, ukrývají stopy a vůbec se chovají nečestně a nesportovně – zatímco organizátorka toho všeho se tváří, jako že se vůbec nic nestalo a že pár mrtvých není ještě důvod, abychom si kazili večírek.

Řešení je poměrně fajn, byť na vás realismem příliš nedýchne. Je to taková Agatha Christie puštěná ze řetězu a je lepší to brát jako hru, než přisuzovat postavám nějaké skutečné emoce. Solidní, ale nijak nevybočující díl série.

Lieutenant Peter Duluth and his actress wife Iris are spending his leave at the Lake Tahoe home of wealthy Lorraine Pleygel. Other guests include Lorraine’s brother, and a group of women about to be divorced. But when Lorraine shows up with the soon-be-ex-husbands, the mortality rate rises daily.
*** Set during WWII, this was an entertaining husband-and-wife investigative pair, not as light as others. Particularly interesting, having been written in 1945, the female characters held their own. I’ve read all the books in this series and have always enjoyed them. I’d recommend giving them a try for something a bit different.
