Heart wrenching, incredible story of a young man, an exceptional priest who changed the world. He was the spark that started the fire and led to the collapse of communism across Eastern Europe.
This heart-wrenching account gets deep into the heads of all of the players involved in this horrifying debacle of late Communist-era Poland. In places, it seemed a little fictionalized to me, but the style worked well to create the appropriate sympathy for these people.
While visiting Poland I learned about this priest who stood up for suppressed people under communism rule. When Russia called for Martial Law, it made things more difficult but it did not stop Fr. Jerzy to continue reaching out to the people, saying Mass and helping them in any way that he could. The Secret Police was constantly watching him, including bugging his room where he stayed. He knew eventually they would kill him, but he wasn’t afraid, he just continued without fear. He was kidnapped, tortured to death and tied to a block of concrete was thrown in the river. He is venerated and is one step away from becoming a saint. I was at his church, learned his story and prayed at his grave. What an amazing man.
