After surviving harrowing twists of fate, Marietta Danver has finally overcome her hardscrabble past. Soon she will be the wife of Lord Derek Hawke, the English aristocrat who fought for his legacy and is about to reclaim his beloved ancestral estate. But in New Orleans, Marietta meets rakish, indigo-eyed Jeremy Bond, who both attracts and intrigues her.
Then, on the eve of her voyage back to England, Marietta once more becomes the prisoner of a cruel and capricious destiny. A shocking act of violence shatters her romantic dreams. A prisoner on the high seas, she’s now at the mercy of the seductive and ruthless pirate Red Nick. It is here, on an island far from civilization, where she will again meet Jeremy Bond—a man who will risk his life over and over for the woman he loves.
I love this book. It was one of the first romance novels I'd ever read. Of course at the time I was all of thirteen-years-old and my mother didn't know what I was up to. But this book has stayed with me for years. After my paperback disintegrated I hunted down and purchased the hardcover. Over the years I've re-read it numerous times, and it remains one of my all-time favorites.
Love Me Marietta is the second book featuring Derek and Marietta Danver. The first book, Love's Tender Fury, wasn't as fun. I just didn't (don't) like Derek as a romantic lead. Jeremy Bond was a breath of fresh air. This book has it all: New Orleans, pirates, cannibals, and lasting love.
Wow, this was really a different romance, if indeed it is a romance at all.
While this story's timeframe is undated (an annoyance), part of it takes place in the Gulf on an island off the coast of New Spain (Texas), which given other references to "rebels" and the pirate Morgan having been knighted a 100 years before suggested the timeframe was mid 1770s prior to the American Revolution; however very late in the book we are told the American Revolution is "raging" so I guess it is late 1770s. It would have been easier if we had a date from the author--whom I have only just discovered is a MAN (which explains so much about this novel).
As romance novels go, this one is--I just gotta say it--weird. And that may be because it is written by a man. What romance novel begins with the heroine, in this case a beautiful highborn redhead, living with the man she loves without benefit of marriage (although he says he'll marry her) all the while it is clear from the back story (this book comes after Love's Tender Fury), he has not always treated her well and now is acting rather cold and harsh toward her? I found that unappealing.
The love scenes, such as they were, left me wanting. Then her lover is shot at the behest of a cousin who wants his title and lands and Marietta is taken captive by a bad guy who rapes her repeatedly for 5 days--ugh! We only read about it after the fact. But still.
She is then sold to a nasty band of pirates who deal in sex slaves. They have captured a number of women all of whom they rape save for her. But she is not spared. When they finally get to the pirate ship, the captain, a brutal man (not like the more interesting and attractive pirates in the woman-authored romances), takes her as "his woman" and he rapes her. (Getting the picture?) I should mention that there was nothing sexy or romantic about any of this. No worthy seductions. Nada. Rather, the whole novel contains a fair amount of brutality toward women.
Mind you, the author can write well. It is written from the first person and the only head you'll be in is Marietta's. The descriptions he gives are detailed, the characters are well developed, the action is good and the story one that will hold your interest (though there are a few slow and tedious parts some of which I've mentioned below). But my biggest complaint is that it didn't feel like a romance. Where is my happy ending? Not here.
I'm giving it 3 stars for the writing. It's good and will hold your interest, but not more because I was so disappointed in the storyline and frankly some of the gratuitous violence against women. There was no feeling of a growing love; no warm fuzzies. If you like a story where love triumphs and the man and woman make a real commitment of their hearts, or if you like love scenes that stir your passion, save your money and don't buy this book.
Just so you know, it's a part of trilogy: Love's Tender Fury; Love Me Marietta and When Love Commands. You'll need to read When Love Commands for the rest of this story if you want it as there is no "end" with this second one.
Lastly, here are a few other things that bothered me:
--Marietta is having sex every night for months on end (not to mention the week of rape), as is her sidekick Em, and neither one gets pregnant. While it may be convenient to the author's storyline, it is not realistic. For the same reason, on the pirate island there should have been a lot of children running around given all the sex the pirates had with the women they'd captured. But alas, that wasn't a part of the "reality" the author created.
--The quick avowal of love from Jeremy for Marietta and then Chris for Corrie didn't feel real. There wasn't enough of a relationship in either case to make it believable. And while "love at first sight" happens, I wasn't convinced here.
--Marietta's continual melancholy gets old as does her fickleness toward Jeremy. If she loved him it was not believable. Is that the author's view of women? I wondered. I couldn't understand why Jeremy told her about Derek. nyway, Derek never impressed me as loving her too terribly much. But instead of seeing Derek for the cold guy he was, the ostensibly smart Marietta turned away the man who loved her whom she considered a "rogue" and held her heart for the cold lord.
Again, I wondered about the author's views of women. A woman would not have written it that way. Just sayin'.
bye far the BEST of the triology,. marietta, the heroine of the story is a badass, doesnt get intimidate or defined by men. i hate when the protagonist of the story is a fragile maiden that brokes at the first shaken
theres soooo much going on in this book, i love the careless personality of jeremy and Em is funny as hell!
probably my fav book by this autor and i dare to say my fav of all time.
A truly magnificent read! The first Jennifer Wilde novel I read was the first in this trilogy, LOVE'S TENDER FURY, and after having immensely enjoyed that one, I knew Wilde would be one of my favourited authors of the HR genre. LOVE ME MARIETTA truly did not disappoint! There's a whole lot of adventure in this one, more so than the first trilogy. There's also a lot of evil characters and sinister plots. If you've enjoyed the first novel in the trilogy, you're bound to enjoy this one!
Seriously , people think this book is better than ‘Loves Tender Fury’? I might as swell blow my brains out because wtf did I just read. Don’t get me wrong , the book still gets 5 stars but it’s not the same 5 stars that the first book earned.
From the last book, we leave off of Marietta and Derek trying to leave New Orleans and return to London. Why does Derek’s character suddenly become so cold and distant ? Hell, he treats Marietta like a whore . It’s so baffling to me that Marietta later decides to search for him in England when Jeremy is right there . Jeremy is the true hero

Why I opted to read this second book of this trilogy after the disastrous first book I'm not sure. I reviewed the first book of the series after reading it, and it was not a good review. I was very honest in my opinions. Maybe I wanted to give this author a chance go redeem herself by reading this one. Unfortunately, my opinion hasn't changed at all. This was just absurd. I feel line I've wasted my time reading. I still cannot stand the main character, Marietta... She's just awful. She's so full of herself and her beauty I feel nauseous. She turns into a total bitch by the end of this one. I'm not sure why the author thinks Marietta telling us in first person how beautiful she is and clever....she's stupid...never makes a decision that ends well. For every bad thing that befalls her she deserves ten times over. I'm so bored with every male character falling instantaneously in love with her the moment they see her...how shallow. And every male is so damned violent, especially with women. Women are only good for a good f@#$! Really? Marietta meets an I famous, deadly pirates captain who, of course, falls in live with her. And Marietta manipulates every single make she meets. The entire plot in this second book is seriously dumb! The characters speak like it's the 21st century, but it's supposed to be a historical romance fiction....it's a comedy! I absolutely recommend no one with half a brain read this book...unless you just want a good laugh. The romance scenes are all exactly the same as if the characters have all read the same "How to Seduce and Bed a Wench" manual....it's laughable. My suggestion is to read a Marsha Canham novel....there you will read sensual romance and a reasonable plot. The only reason I would read the last book in this series at this point is to dee how much worse the books can get. Find a real book to read because this one is just plain silly!
The crazy train keeps right on rolling for Marietta. Pirates and sex slavery and violence oh my! The second volume of this trilogy is just as delightfully campy as volume one was. Very fun read.
This book was off the charts with action and adventure. It started in New Orleans with that Marietta and that dreaded loser Derek Hawke. She fancies herself in love with him for some reason that I cannot fathom. In the previous book of the series, he'd purchased her as an indentured servant and at one time, she crossed him and he knocked her to the ground with a fist to her jaw. He really wasn't good to her at any time, but now he's promised to take her to England and marry her and blah blah blah. I thought she was an idiot for believing him.
Enter Jeremy Bond. He is just one among the multitude of men who thinks he's in love with her. She's beautiful, yes. She's smart and headstrong, yes, but she's also clear that she does not love him and will never love him because she's going to go to England and marry Derek Hawke. I didn't see or feel any sort of chemistry between her and that cretin and I never understood her allegiance to him. Yay, he bought her fancy dresses and had sex with her and all of that, but he's still a pretentious, arrogant, moody liar.
I liked Jeremy Bond. He was suave, debonair, macho, flirtatious, didn't make any bones about the women he kept company with or how many women he knew in the primal sense. He was handsome and women were dropping at his feet. But not Marietta. He'd proclaimed his love for her and she brutally cast it aside. The real problem was he was genuine.
There's an entire section of the book dedicated to Marietta's time with Red Nick and his band of pirates. I won't go into how she ended up with them, due to the risk of spoilers, but that part of the book kept me up all night reading. It was tense. Red Nick was rich, good looking, lived like a king, kept Marietta in fine clothes and beautiful jewels--all stolen, of course--but he was just flat evil. He was cold, calculating, and had zero feelings for anyone.
Marietta made friends with Em and Corrie while they were being transported to the island that Red Nick owned and they worked together like nothing else and stayed together through thick and thin. Em was clever and witty. Corrie was young, of mixed race, and was shunned, but Marietta was her champion and saved her from the brutality of Red Nick, who never wanted to see her and threatened to send her to a brothel in South America. These three women were a force to be reckoned with. I loved them all at this point.
I don't want to go into the drama that unfolded with these ladies and the pirates. Suffice it to say, it involved Jeremy Bond, a few of his friends, and some cannibalistic Indians. That part had me sitting at the edge of my seat. I knew it wasn't going to be easy for them, but what they had to endure...wow. I didn't want to stop reading.
This was a crazy good read. It's nearly 600 pages of action, adventure, loss, and tears. But at the end, I wanted to shake Marietta and yell in her face to stop being so stupid. She was so hung up on that bastard Derek Hawke and for no reason. He'd filled her with lies and, for all intents and purposes, had abandoned her, yet she was still chasing him. I was rolling my eye and cursing her. She frustrated me so much.
This was a super good read. It is part of a series and I do recommend that the first book be read before embarking on this one. Love's Tender Fury lays the groundwork for Marietta and how she got to America, her relationship with the disingenuous Derek Hawke, and how she got to where she was in this book.
As frustrated as I got with her, it was still worth every minute I spent reading it. I have the third book and final book on deck and am anxious to see how Marietta ends up.
May I just say that these books are absolutely ridiculous and I don’t condone the veiled racism and sexism displayed throughout them, along with the graphic depictions of rape, violence, etc.
That being said, this series is so good and I can’t put these books down. I don’t get it. The first book was crazy and this one is even crazier. There’s pirates, cannibals, aristocratic intrigue, dramatic love declarations, mad escapes through the wilderness, just general mayhem. Marietta is brave and smart in some moments, then mr. magoo’s her way through life in others. It’s mildly infuriating, some of decisions that she makes, when there is obvious foreshadowing for how its going to end for her.
I’m glad we see less of Hawke in this. He sucks for many reasons, but mainly because he’s the most boring bodice ripper hero/villain I’ve ever read. He’s so moody and lame. Jeremy is still abusive in some ways, but at least he acts like he actually can understand Marietta, and also risked his life way more than Hawke ever did. Marietta’s stubborn clinging to a man who again was a slave owner, sold her, abandoned her twice, is just generally cold and unpleasant to her, was really annoying, and this coming from me who likes a lot of really f’ed up here/villains in these kinds of books. Like if you are gong to be a dick at least be interesting.
But these books are fun and in moments, and very entertaining. If you are looking for a good vacation book or just adventure, i would recommend these, baring in mind the TW.
Read in e book form. I preferred the first book, love’s tender fury much better than this one. It continues on from the first book so you have to read the second book and the third book to get the final resolution of what happens to Marietta in the end. I read all three books in a row on e book over a whopping 1,000 page. I wish the pirate was given more personality and depth. I kept being told about how bad and horrible he is from marietta’s first hand experiences. This book series is different in the writing is done from a first person view. But that restricts the development of other characters because we only have the prejudiced and biased perspective of Marrietta’s.
Too much of the same description. I found myself skipping through the details as they were always the same to get on with the story. Yes I can definitely tell a man wrote this long tale. It is a man’s lust described. That got redundant and rather boring. I’m not going to read book 3. I know it will be the same ole same ole. Done with Marietta.
Holiday read. Obviously not the first in the series which is at times disconcerting. Rather anachronistic feel at times ("shall we stop off for a beer"...)
Hmm.. bad good guys, good bad guys, sailors, plantations, pirates, you name it. Action packed, low on credibility.
I just wanted to follow Marietta's story so I read the second book and the #3 for that matter... I liked. Just not as much as "love's tender fury" that one is special!
In retrospect, this series was just awful. I read all three of them, though, so there's that. Let's give this one an extra star for the puffy shirt on the cover.
