excellent juv/YA historical fiction -- well-written, with clear, vivid depiction of the revolutionary war setting. good morals and a protagonist who is easy to like. this novel does a good job of introducing a cross-section of characters without overwhelming the reader in historical details.

Hope's father works for General Washington during the revolutionary war. Tories break into their house and burn everything down and even kidnap Hope who is just a young girl. Taken back to the Torie's house Hope is treated very badly, especially by the wife. Fortunately there's an older woman who helps Hope to escape.

Fortunately she also can depend on Pruitt Jones who is a Loyalist but willing to help a young girl. All she has to do is escape the Tory house, get somewhere they can't find her and then find a way to get back to her own family a good distance away.

The story shows the depth of feeling on both sides of the American revolution which basically divided America just as severely as the Civl War did decades later. Some fought on principle but some acted based only on selfishness as did the man who kidnapped Hope.

THIs is the best mid-grade novel about the Revolutionary War that I have read. It is filled with action, drama, good character studies, lovely writing and fine insight into the Heroine, Hope Wakefield.

Hope is captured from her Connecticut home by a violent Tory sympathiser while her father is fighting with General Washington. The story of her courage through an nearly endless series of cruel actions against her is engrossing and inspiring.

Details of the War and the sympathies of supporters of both the Rebel and the Tory sides are woven into the manuscript. Life in Colonial times in Connecticut, Long Island and New York City is set forth on a skillful way. Masterful research and writing by the author Joan Elizabth Goodman.

Hope's crossing was very interesting to read. It's set in the Revolutionary time period where the daughter of a war hero is kidnapped and has to make her way home all by herself in enemy land. It shows a lot about self perseverance and overcoming your fears. I thought the book was interesting and it was also very inspiring.

for years, i had VIVIDLY remembered reading this book back in the fifth grade, but could not for the life of me remember the name. it honestly bugged me senseless but every google search came up empty. i had remembered something about a girl being kidnapped in a different time period. i don’t even think i remembered her name. i recalled my english class being tasked with creating and putting on a skit based on the book; as well as my group hilariously acting out something involving a grandma who got sick, some sort of fortune telling, and laughing really really hard all through our performance because of “grandma.” despite only remembering vague details, i knew i remembered loving it… granted this was a decade prior, but enough to leave an impression!
so i tasked myself with hunting down my fifth grade teacher, who thankfully still worked in the same school district, and sent her an epically awkward email asking for a random book that i vaguely remembered. fortunately enough, mrs. casey remembered me (!), remembered our hilarious skit (!), and knew exactly what book i was referring to.
so 10 years later, i finally found this book on amazon and read it while in college, reliving literary memories from years ago.
i might even go as far to say that this book was the start of my love for historical fiction🖤

I really enjoyed this book. I am very happy that Hope ended up getting home to her family. When Mother Thomas passed away I felt as though the story could never have a happy ending, but it did. I am surprised that Pruitt Jones helped Hope and that shows that, sometimes you have to do what is right. I wish that everyone in the world would do what is right all the time.
Something else I liked about this book is how Hope went through so many different obstacles just to get to her family. She had to fight the small pox, Mr. Thomas and Elsspeth, the death of Mother Thomas and many other things. I am amzed that Hope was able to do this and I wish I would have the strength to fight that much.

American Revolution, CT & NYC. 13 year old Hope is kidnapped from her home when a group Tories attacks her house searching for her father, who is away with Washington's army. She is made to work as a servant in the Thomas household until Mother Thomas helps her escape to NYC. While in British held NYc, Hope must pretend to be Mother Thomas' granddaughter and a loyal Tory. They quickly discover that it is impossible to travel safely to Hope's home. Then the situation worsens when Mother Thomas contracts pox.

I think this book would appeal to readers interested in what it was like to live in NYC during the American Revolution and also to readers who enjoyed "Fever 1793".

Back then people were so rude. With this book, you can't decide what side to be on because Mother Thomas, the older women who is helping Hope get home again, is the mother of the leader that burned down Hope's home and took Hope home as a servant. I think that sometimes Mother Thomas was ashamed to be a Tory when she was helping this girl. Then, the escape plan is ruined when Hope is left all alone many miles away from her family. I love how this book has the tinest of details that make the book even better by a lot. Even though my favorite character was only in the book for a couple pages, it went a long way with it's pink curly tail and loveable personality. (Yes it is a pig)

A great read for historical fiction. Since the 4th grade kids I work with had to read a historical fiction book this month, I thought I would too. I really enjoyed that it took place in Connecticut and mentions Westchester county NY, where I grew up. It wasn't hard to imagine Hope and her perils in trying to get back to her family. The book gives a good idea of what living back then might have been like.

My 10 year old daughter absolutely loved this book. Historical fiction, I think, is so powerful for young kids seeking to gain a more intimate look at important events in our history. When the main character is their age, it becomes more relatable and understandable.

Hope's Crossing was great! It is very educational. It is set in the time of the Revolutionary war. Hope (The main character) was taken from her home by a cruel man and his band of Tories. In the raid he burns her family's house.
In her journey she finds the courage that she thought she would never have.

I liked Pruitt Jones.

It's better than the Pickpocket's Tale I was reading a few weeks ago. My library has better kid books than adult books (which isn't saying much) so if I go and don't have anything on hold that I ordered on purpose from another library, I end up reading stuff like this.

I really enjoyed this book. It gives a nice and realistic feel to the tension between the patriots and the Tories. I wouldn't want to live in that time period, but it makes a great story to read about. This is a great book for anyone who loves historical fiction.

I wish that the whole book had been as gripping as the beginning of it. The first two chapters made me want to read more and more, and then it just went downhill. Nothing really exciting happened. If it had been as exciting as it was in the beginning, I would have rated it 5 stars.

Great female protagonist! Perfect for teaching the American Revolution....girly, yet suspenseful enough for the boys. Winners across the board!
