An accessible guide to the theory and practice of teaching English to children in primary education.
This book is not a theoretical analysis of teaching language to young learners, nor is it a resource manual with a list of ready ideas and 'tips' for classroom use. Instead, it aims to discuss and bring together research relevant to children and language learning and principles in classroom practice.
The book is organized into eleven chapters:
1. Learning and development 2. Learning the first language at home and at school 3. Learning a second/third language at home and at school 4. Policy: primary ELT programmes 5. Teaching listening and speaking 6. Teaching reading and writing 7. Teaching vocabulary and grammar 8. Learning to learn (helping children develop learning strategies) 9. Materials evaluation and materials design 10. Assessment 11. Research in the primary English classroom
Each chapter ends with a list of recommended reading, a survey of background theory, references to various practical teacher resources, and a set of follow-up tasks suitable both for trainee teachers and practising teachers using the book independently.
Annamaria Pinter is a lecturer at the Centre for English Language Teacher Education at the University of Warwick, UK. Originally she comes from Hungary where she worked in a teacher training college specialising in ELT for young learners. She had several years of experience of teaching children of all ages in both state primary schools and private language schools in Hungary. For the last decade she has worked in the UK with international students at MA level, teaching courses related to ELT for young learners such as the psychology of language learning and teaching and materials and course design and evaluation for young learners.
She has supervised a wide variety of dissertations in the area of classroom research with young learners. She has also run practical workshops and training courses for teachers and teacher trainers both at Warwick and overseas and has a keen interest in teacher development. Her PhD research was about the benefits of task-based learning for children in EFL contexts.
Good book for teachers in a school classroom. For me the first 5 chapters were a good review. I am going to read those again. I work mainly with speech, so that is my focus when I read. I don't use worksheets and such so ours is all active learning. There is something here for everyone though no matter what style or focus you have.
Good introduction to teaching English to young learners with lots of practical suggestions embedded into the theory. Lots of suggestions for further reading too.
الكتاب خاص بتعليم صغار السن، جدًا ممتع، طريقة الصياغة وترتيب الأفكار أفضل من كتاب كاميرون بمراحل استمتعت جدا بقراءته تركز على دراسات تدعم كلامها، أنشطة ممكن المعلم يسويها للطلاب.
