This novel set in Africa shows the conflicts between art and idealism and Western and non-Western values. The main character, a missionary , is caught in many ways and is tortured by choices he has to make. The title tells it all. A long dry season in Christianity is one of self doubt. The long dry season in weather is one of drought or lack of water. I was disappointed in the happy ending which was quite a let down for the twisted tortured trial of living this missionary life in what was paradise for Thomas but hell for his wife. The story is cloudy. The reader is not told where in Africa or when the story takes place. I imagine this was deliberate. It is not a happy go lucky tale of Africa , but one of poverty, cruelty, and ignorance. This is another gem that is overlooked for its age, but goes on my forever shelf.
