Detective Cassandra Maldonado is a single mother with New York’s finest, who manages to finagle herself a spot on the NYPD’s most elite homicide squad by speaking up when she knows she won’t be refused, which doesn’t earn her any friends. She needs the money, so she deals with it – anything is worth putting up with if it means a better life for her son.
But homicide is very different from the nine-to-five jobs she’s had, and as Cassandra starts to wonder how she’s going to make this work with the stick-to-a-schedule needs of her son, she finds herself smack dab in the middle of a celebrity murder.
I liked how Cassandra jumps in with both feet, picking out clues and trying to work with her assigned partner – who’s much nicer than I would’ve expected him to be, considering how she wormed her way in. I liked her smarts, her spunkiness, and her ability to keep moving forward regardless of any regrets. Not that she has the time for regrets, as the investigation drags on and the powers that be are not only anxious for a resolution, but are yanking on Cassandra’s chain as much as they can.
The story is to the point, the plot gives you a few surprises to uncover as you turn the pages, and the ending, while neat, isn’t exactly a happily-ever-after for everyone. Fans of cop thrillers should give Boogie Down a whirl, and then come back and let me know what you thought!
Detective Cassandra Maldonado is a woman set on improving the life of her son by moving up the so-called ladder in the NYPD. With the promise of a promotion, she manages to nab the Marathon Slasher... only to find out the promotion isn't going to happen. Maldonado doesn't take this news laying down; instead she fights back. When a music icon is found murdered, she finds out that the music business is a vicious machine, full of lies where everyone is hungry for money and nothing is as it seems.
Crime dramas seem to fall in one of two categories for me. They're either cheesy and lame, lacking the mystery that keeps me intrigued or they're super fulfilling due to the realistic turn of events, as well as the characters ability to show true emotion. Boogie Down is definitely the latter. I was completely immersed in the characters lives and the events surrounding the death of FYSHBone. Cassandra is a strong take-charge female that can handle herself in a sticky situation and is quite impressive. As we all know, men usually fill that role but it was nice to see a woman step up to the plate and kick some tail.
Serrano provides the reader with just enough details to keep you enthralled in this gripping thriller and thirsting for more. If you enjoy reading a gripping thriller that will keep you guessing to the very end then grab a copy of Boogie Down.
Loved Gunmetal Black, loved Boogie Down. Daniel Serrano did it again. He captured the real NY in both of his books. This one seems taken from today's headlines. FYSHbone is a rapper who is gunned down. Cassandra Maldonado is the cop on the case. Cassandra has an autistic son and a failed marriage and no good father for her son. She is riding on the glory of her capture of a park slasher. There is a sexy lawyer in the mix (that Cassandra has met before), a body building loan shark/pimp who may be the rappers father and other characters. All in all a very good, suspenseful, gritty read.
