Take one long-married and occasionally exasperated couple getting along in years, their well meaning daughter and precocious grandson, a clueless dog, an independent minded cat, plus assorted other quirky but endearing characters and you have the world of Pickles, Brian Crane's beloved comic strip that takes a wiry but good-natured look at the foibles of family and friends.
Life can be stressful. Holidays especially can be that way. So it's one of our families traditions (that we started in 2016) to get our favorite comic books to read through the holiday season for a quick pick me up or a quick laugh. Maybe it's because I'm a grandma and can relate, but I love the Pickle's comics. They make me laugh. And often make me laugh out loud. And that is a very good thing!
Pickles is a great comic strip about an old couple managing their way through their senior years. I have been reading the strip for years and was delighted to come across this collection. While its from around 2010, none of the strips are aged, because much of their humorous reflections on old age are timeless. There are so many cute adventures in this book, but I think I like the one best when Earl gets locked in his bathroom when the door handle breaks, and he writes his will on the roll of toilet paper! In another hilarious strip, he loses his wife in the store, comes up from behind a woman he thinks is her and gives her a pat on the backside only to find out it isn't her at all! Or when Earl decides only to loan a rake to Clyde that is totally worn out only to find out it's a rake he borrowed from Clyde years ago and never returned! The strips are just cute, funny, nostalgic, simple, relatable and just so funny! I enjoyed every moment of this collection and just wish all the Pickles comics strips were compiled as many other series are!
I got this for my husband and read it after him. It's one of the better comic books that I've read in recent years, and I'd read it again sometime. (Rereading something is an automatic 5 stars.)
I know it's a little irreverent, but I thought Nelson wanting to dress up as God for Halloween was funniest. He was hoping that the other kids would tithe 10% of their candy to him.
