Zits Sketchbook #10

Pimp My Lunch

Rate this book
Zits chronicles the daily life of a teen in a way that's not done in the popular media - with respect. "Having teenagers in the house is like having a front-row seat to one of life's great passages," says Jim Borgman. "Zits tries to respect that period by taking a sympathetic view of all the players involved - the parents, as well as the kids."

"We like to think of Zits as the antidote to all of the bad stuff you read about teenagers today," adds Jerry Scott. "Many people believe that modern adolescence is all about gangs, guns, drugs, and AIDS. While all of that exists, Zits takes a look at the teen years from ground level, where, for most kids, relationships, friendships, school, and sports are the stuff of daily life." Zits levels the playing field and often causes (gasp!) communication to occur between kids and their parents.

Really enjoying reading all the Zits comic books. I have always enjoyed the strip, and am now in the process of buying and reading all the books! Pimp My Lunch! is a great collection from a little earlier in the series. The characters are beginning to mature in being drawed and the family and characters are more developed. This is a very enjoyable read for any fan of the series.

Originally published in 2005 (with strips from 2004), this continues the adventures of Jeremy Duncan, battling through his teenaged years and trying to understand his parents, Walt and Connie. As always, there’s a lot to love and part of that comes from the nostalgic blasts of my own teens (I had a great time in the 80s), my love of coming-of-age stories and my life as Dude’s dad (he’s 20 now and at uni). There are a lot of great strips here – funny, occasionally surreal, accurate and sometimes with a little melancholy – any my highlights include Jeremy’s beard, the financial sermon, squirrel fishing, swimming lessons, Pierce’s moped, “new amp?”, Walt’s old tour t-shirts, “Have much homework?” – “Have much hair?”, ringing the remote, “History has doubled” since Walt was at school, Xmas shopping, “I look like you”, saying what you shouldn’t, “Can you imagine (Sara stark naked and dripping wet)?”, touching Jeremy’s leg, “everybody is a doofus”, admiring Jeremy, the $400 phone bill and “pimp my lunch”. With plenty of laugh out loud panels, this is a great addition to the Zits universe and I highly recommend it.

Plenty of Zits humour and the little bits of occasional sweetness as well. A nice, relaxing look at parents and teens.

I like the title of this one and it's a sentiment I've shared. Who doesn't want a better lunch?

Quite a few good laughs, and even shared a few with my now-teenaged kids.

The title refers to Jeremy wanting his mom to jazz up his boring bologna & cheese sandwich lunch.
