R.E.M. HELLO.

Rate this book
R.E.M. has risen from cult college radio status to sell more than 100 million records worldwide and be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Released to coincide with their world tour and new album, this gorgeous photo book captures the band on- and offstage with rare and intimate access for the first time. David Belisle has photographed and traveled with R.E.M. for the past seven years; his dynamic images and insider's perspective capture the band's performances, recording and video sessions, but also reveal its members in personal spaces that only the band and their closest friends inhabit. Handwritten captions by the band and an introduction by Michael Stipe add context and insight to a must-have document for fans.

Michael Stipe

John Michael Stipe is an American singer who is the lead vocalist for the alternative rock band R.E.M.. Stipe has become well-known (and occasionally parodied) for the "mumbling" style of his early career and for his complex, surreal lyrics, as well as his social and political activism. Stipe is in charge of the band's visual image, often selecting album artwork and directing many of the band's music videos. Stipe's work extends outside of the music industry, and he runs his own film production companies, C-00 and Single Cell Pictures.

Who doesn't want to work for or tour with their favorite band? This beautiful collection of photographs of R.E.M. makes me even more jealous that I can't follow them everywhere (Please? Michael? Mike? Please??).

The best pages of the book are 34, 43, 48, 149, 152, 165, and 164. ... Okay, maybe not *the best*, but some pretty damned good pictures ;) Seriously, though, there are some amazing and stunning photos in this book, and they give you a fascinating look into the behind-the-scenes of the band, both professionally and personally.

*heart goes thumpa-thumpa*

Savoured every page, moved my fingers on the photographs. At least I have this book to help me imagine what it would feel like to stand close to your favourite band.

David Belisle meets R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe first in 2001, after the Twin Towers disaster.
From this day on, he follows the band throught worlwide tour and sessions, taking inspiring pictures with his Leica everytime he thought it was the moment to. All these pics are collected in R.E.M: HELLO, a book dedicated to all the real R.E.M. fans.

Favourites pics are at 120, 172 and 182. However, all photos are beautiful, spontaneous, and a bit gloomy sometimes.

A wonderful insight of R.E.M. world.

I bought this book for my hubby (as a concert buddy gift) , but I absolutely love this book too! The pictures are really interesting and sometimes pretty darn funny. There are even moments of terror, like the picture of Michael Stipe kneeling in his shoes and looking like a little person. I probably shouldn't have said that. Anyway, it's a really cool book.

As far as modern picture/art books go, this one is amazing. Sure, I am a major R.E.M fan- so I may be a bit bias, but over all the photography inside of this book is breath-taking. The behind the scenes moments of what I consider to be the group's "massive comeback" is nothing less than captivating. Fan or not, it is well worth checking out.

Gorgeous collection of pictures of R.E.M. and friends, circa 2004. The prints make you feel like you've embarked on tour with the band. Some of my biggest musical inspirations, aside from R.E.M. are in this: Patti Smith, Neil Young, Eddie Vedder, Thom Yorke, and many others. Great work by David Belisle!

26. R.E.M.: Hello by D. Belisle

This is an interesting hybrid of photographs and essays centering around the personal and professional lives of band R.E.M. Only true followers of the band and/or of this type of photography would find this compelling.
