I much preferred The Temporary Husband over this one. The story is a bit convoluted but, basically, Jane is a 25-year old heiress completely alone in the world, except for a friend of her late father. He convinces her to come stay with him and have his female cousin chaperone her and introduce her to society. He also has a neighbor staying with him while the neighbor's house is being fixed. The story follows with Jane becoming a success, misunderstandings, a creepy villain and smuggling.

Unfortunately, I didn't care for the main couple, Jane and Mark. I found them very immature. Jane is constantly crying and, after she tells herself that crying doesn't accomplish anything and she'll no longer do it, she proceeds to cry a few more times. She acted more like an 18-year old debutant than a sensible woman. Mark and Jane both had some unfortunate circumstances in their past that fueled the misunderstandings and drama, but I still couldn't care.

The only saving grace was Sir Henry, Jane's father's friend. He should have been the hero in this book. He was mature, nice, and understanding. Being a mature woman myself, it's probably the reason I saw him as the true hero. I also prefer older, mature and sensible heroines and this review reflects that.

Technically, this book is clean, but there's one passionate encounter that might bother those who only care for kisses.
