Step-by-step books are good for a tutorial drive-by and I got most of the information I needed. Having used Project 2000 I was well equiped to quickly move through it. However, I did find critical path explanations to be lacking and turned to the internet and co-workers for a more in-depth understanding of how to manipulate and track critical paths.
