Rate this book
Tinderbox is a tool for notes, a personal content management assistant. The Tinderbox Way takes a close look at Tinderbox and its underlying ideas, exploring not just the program's mechanics but also its design and its spirit. From the elements of writing more effective notes to the frontiers of information farming, from the classroom and conference hall to the research laboratory, The Tinderbox Way explores a new approach to working with and representing interlinked ideas.

This is the missing manual to Tinderbox, a piece of software maybe best described as a "thought processor". Tinderbox has an amazingly steep learning curve - but, to paraphrase Douglas Engelbart, Tinderbox is "software for adults".

The interesting thing about this book, though, is that the author seems to spend as much time talking about hypertext theory and other software packages as much as about Tinderbox itself. And, when Tinderbox itself is discussed, there's a lot of insight into very thoughtful aspects of the software.

The book is definitely worth a read, and the software s worth a purchase.

This is the philosophy and "zen" behind one of my favorite pieces of software. It's the second time I've read it and I got a lot more from it this time, since I'm also now a more advanced user of Tinderbox. Apart from its use as a guide to a piece of software, this book is a sophisticated exploration of the meaning of "taking notes" for ones life.

For an example of how I've used Tinderbox to plan my novels, see the following blog entry:

So almost anyone who has ever used the software knows how complex it is and how quickly it will acquaint you with just how little you know about computers, or at the very least how much more about them others must know in order to be able to construct such elegant notes of their own or such a masterpiece as the application is as a whole.

If you are someone who purchased the software and feels stuck, read this book.
If you are someone who has been thinking about it from afar, read this book.
If you're a longtime user and are interested in improving your skillset, read this book.
if you're interested in hypertext in general or are on the market in search of a different workflow, or way to take notes, you guessed it, read this.

This helped to make much clearer so many of those idiosyncrasies the application has to it, and in the process of doing so reveals how absolutely everything about it is intentional in ways it's difficult for my puny brain to fully or accurately comprehend. This definitely has opened some doors for me in terms of various things I now want to try doing with my notes overall, complete with examples and everything else one might need.

bagus kok!

Right-hearted and wrong-headed. Which perfectly describes the software too, IMO. I'm working on a larger, more detailed report, though I don't know if or when I'll post it.
