I saw many opportunities to reinforce my teaching about multiplication, distributive property, and division. This would be a great book for a learning Center for students to create equations for each of the ways the kids in the book assembled.

this is a good book for beginner readers. It's also a good math book. I would recommend this book to others.

Grade/interest level: Primary (2nd)

Lexile: 470
Genre: Picture book, nonfiction

Main characters: The teacher, the class
Setting: The zoo
POV: Third person

This fun picture book is about a teacher who takes her class on a trip to the zoo. She does not want to lose anyone so she instructs the students to remember to stay in line. At first the kids do not want to but once they realize how fun it is to create different numbered lines, they comply. There are twelve students in the class and they realize that there are many different ways to stay in line: three lines of four students, two lines of six students and many more! The children have fun seeing all the animals at the zoo while following their teacher’s rules in a fun way!

I would use this book in my class for a math lesson. I could use it to introduce multiplication and the idea of equal groups. In the book the children stood in two groups of six, three groups of four, one group of twelve and four groups of three. I could use the book to show the students that all four groups equaled twelve, just in different ways.

A cute book about a class of twelve who takes a field trip to the zoo. They must figure, though, how to stay in line. So, they make many different lines; two lines of six, three lines or four, etc. A good pairing and grouping book to read to kids and try out in the classroom with themselves or manpulatives. The teacher change the assigned number depending on the students. How may lines could you make with 30 toy bears? etc.

This is the perfect book to read before a lesson on multiplication using arrays. In the story the students go to the zoo, and they have to arrange themeselves in different arrays to include all twelve students.
