The Marriage Class

Rate this book
One Class. Ten Couples. Ten Decisions.

Abi and Raymond are engaged to be married and have started marriage class. It's an exciting step in their journey to the altar...if you discount Abi's cold feet, and the resurfacing of her ex fiancé, her ex fiancé who is now married to someone else. Abi's heart is torn in two very different directions; the calm and steadfast love she has with Raymond, and the chaotic yet exciting passion she had with Lucas. And they are not the only couple struggling.

In their fast-tracked marriage class, the nine other couples include a billionaire playboy reluctant to get married a third time, a couple engaged after a whirlwind romance and now struggling with the reality of getting to really know each other, a couple engaged after an almost two-decade long relationship,  a couple engaged after a surprise and not-exactly-desired pregnancy, a couple who met on social media but who now differ about just how much of their relationship should be for the 'gram and how much should be private, a groom fifteen years younger than his bride, and a bride marrying a man she has never met.

By the end of the marriage class, all ten couples find themselves at a crossroads, their relationships tethered by one very key question.

Will they...or won't they?

One class
Ten couples
Ten decisions

When ten different couples with different stories and background decide to attend a weekly marriage class, things are bound to get interesting.
Marriage class tells us a story with themes about intimacy, love languages, commitment, faithfulness, working through differences, forgiveness and many more.
I found myself rooting for some couples and wanting some to break up. I'm actually surprised that Ewa and Sanya stood strong, who would have thought? 😂 Some of these people are chaotic especially that Abi of a woman.
I absolutely enjoyed reading this book and I found myself unable to put it down.
I almost shed tears at the end of the book, it was a perfect ending and it made my heart melt.

Loved this compilation of short stories.
The premise is that 10 different couples with different relationship challenges attend a marriage class and their various experiences lead them either to the alter or far away from it. 😊
I loved the concept.
Could be a mini TV series.
My favourite story was about the older woman and the younger man who had to struggle with age difference.
The other story I enjoyed a lot was the razz Igbo man and the slay queen. That made me laugh.
All of the stories are authentic to Nigeria and would give you that nostalgic feeling of home.
The dialogue was also very relatable.
All this said, reading this book tasked me a lot. So many characters and names to keep up with and loads of flashbacks, head bobbing and switching POVs
I kept pushing because the stories were so interesting that I fought through the difficulties to enjoy them.
The result is I don’t remember any of the character’s names.
But I remember their stories and that’s what counts.
I enjoyed this… eventually 😂😂😂
I recommend if you enjoy short stories set in Nigeria.

Ps: I received an ARC from the author for my honest opinion

Just as this book is written in multiple POVs (different stories), multiple emotions will also go through you while reading. You will feel empathy, happiness and even annoyance.

One thing that made me happy is the resolution that each of the characters came to, they were able to either work through their relationship issues or move away from it. I like how honestly this book was written.

As someone who mostly likes to read for entertainment, I love how educative (marriage wise) this book is.

Did I mention the writing, seamless and beautiful. I definitely recommend.

PS: I was gifted an ARC of this book by the author.

The marriage class tells us the story of ten couples in one class trying to make decisions about their relationships. We follow these couples through each chapter with them learning about commitment, love, attraction and forgiveness in their relationships.

It was a bit slow in the beginning for me because of the many names and the time it took for me to determine which couple was which, but overall a fun and entertaining read.

I went into this book with very very low expectations but this book just blew me away. I stayed up late last night finishing it. And, I was so invested in every couple's story. I found myself laughing so hard and tearing up sometimes. I loved this book so much. And, I am definitely going to check out more books by this author.

10 couples were definitely a lot to keep up with at first, but they grew on me ❤️.

It was giving reality TV, and I was all for it!

Switching between POVs couldn’t have been easy, but Adesuwa pulled it off so well—I loved it!

I also liked the endings, especially how not every couple got a good one (because “good” is subjective).

I loved the idea of exploring romantic relationships through the lenses of the five Nigerian couples enrolled in a marriage orientation class. Each member had a unique personality - with some being more memorable than others- and following the dynamics of each relationship made for a mostly fun, hilarious and engaging read. Yet, I really struggled to keep up with some of them because of the way the narrative was structured. I also wasn’t feeling some of the conflict resolutions between the couples.

At the end of the day, I think a lot more couples than those three should have parted ways but I was happy to see that we got a more realistic ending than the conventional HEA.

very entertaining, but way too many characters. fewer couples with deeper storylines would’ve been better imo. I think this would work great as a tv series to explore each couple’s background.

Mildly entertaining but I didn’t like any of the characters so it involved a lot of skipping ahead because they were all irritating but some surprising plot twists where all the couples I thought would stay together didn’t and the ones I thought were not going to make it did so.

Yesterday, I wrote an essay long of a review about what I thought about this book but after clicking the wrong buttons, it disappeared into the void. It discouraged me that I've lost it but that's beside the point because I've still held the need to write down my thoughts about this book because it is too good. For me, it represents my absolute love that I possess for nollywood flims espiecally those that reflects friendship, sisterhood juggling day-to-day life with the usaully relationships issues. What I mostly love seeing in those movies is that black african love story, making me wonder when i'll be able to experience that storyline for myself. Nonetheless, that settles the image i'm trying to paint that The Marriage Class felt like that and beyond. I remeber binging this book into the early mornings over these characters messiness. I'll be honest, at first i found it hard knowing that there were ten couples to keep track of, let alone as individuals but the author made sure that they weren't too extensive in their characterization while still perfectly retaining the essence of who they are as a person and in their relationships which I can only imagine how Adesuwa managed to do this within the bounds of the unfolding of the plot. Big props to her! Within each of these couples, there were issues coming up and it gave me so much thoughts that i enjoy having and the rants i went on by myself, my mind was railing and I couldn't get enough of this book so yeah it's not surprised I finished in less than a day. This author made me raise my standards in men using Raymond and Sanya, their acts making me yearn for that type of treatment in my future relationship. I've gasped and laughed so many times, i've lost count. Numerous times i've exclaimed with Eh? Abi? You dey crase? etc. like a overbearing, judgemental nigerian aunty whenenever something in this book warranted that reaction. A lot of eye rolls and side eyes. Also, I'm here wondering why i'm saying that she might just become one of my favourites author when i've only read one of her book LOL. But no matter, I want to read more books coming from this author as I enjoyed troroughly this book and the writing style was beautifully written. It is a masterpiece. This author is extremely talented with words to make you feel all of the roller coaster emotions. Currently considering raising it to a five stars... if you should take anything away from this review, it should be that you need to pick up this book ASAP!

Ten couples attends a marriage class leading to ten decisions whether or not to continue on their part to get married.
I enjoyed reading this book, not Adesuwa's regular but it was quite insightful. It shows different reasons on why people want to get married and why some frown at it. Also shows the diverse relationships among different couples. At some point I was getting confused on their different stories cause they are a lot but I caught up fast.

I know I start most of my reviews with 'I didn't know what to expect when I started reading this book', well, I'm going to repeat it.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading The Marriage Class. I saw the glowing reviews, the intriguing book trailer and the cover was just tantalizing, but I was a bit sceptical.

Not sure why, but let's delve into my review.

The Marriage Class tells the story of a set of couples preparing for their big day and taking a pre-wedding counselling course.

I have to laud Adesuwa O'man Nwokedi's storytelling prowess. She crafts such unique characters that make you laugh, cry, and get mad.

It'll be hard to talk about each couple, but because I'm extra I'll talk about my five favourite couples.

At number five are A.K. & Chioma. I fell in love with their story. The insecure girl who caught a really big fish and, like everyone else, is asking what he sees in me. I rooted for this couple like crazy because I believe everyone deserves a happily ever after. And I was glad they got it even though it seemed like all hope was lost.

At number four are Bianca and Prince. I screamed Recipe For Disaster when Bianca shared her story with the class. Premium ata gungun tears loading. But then, theirs turned out to be a sweet, almost fairytale-like story.

At number three, Ogechi and Zulu. This couple made me laugh. The pi-laugh joke cracked me up. The pre wedding shoot even more. If ever there was a time when opposites attract seemed to be a big fat lie, it was with Ogechi and Zulu, but I loved how they learned to love each other.

At number two, Sanya and Ẹwà. I lovvvvvveeeeedddddd this couple. Sanya is the man of my dreams 😍😍😍. I loved how he loved Ẹwà. I loved his simplicity and genuineness. And Ẹwà redemption arc was sooo beautiful. This couple would have made it to my number one but...

Eric and Ivie happened. I did not root for this couple at all. When Eric called Ivie a brat, something in me sparked, I wanted to enter the book and slap him. Eric would not have been the only recipient of my slaps (eyes Abi Patience Ozokwor style). Anyway, they turned things around. When they broke up, I almost cried. Seeing how they loved each other and were a part of each other's lives made me want them back together. I enjoyed their love story.

Abi and Raymond...The MCs but I felt Raymond was too good for Abi. I know I sound judgemental but I said what I said. Abi should have healed before dealing again. Luckily, she found a gem in Raymond.

Boma and his dry jokes deserve an honourable mention. I enjoyed them.

One thing I also enjoyed in this novel was that some characters knew when to walk away and I'm glad they did.

This was an overall enjoyable novel. Lighthearted and breezy. The only thing I didn't enjoy was everyone complaining about the trip to the mainland. I was like e don do, island shildren 😂😂.

Easily 4.5 stars out of 5.
I held half of a star back because sometimes I felt a bit lost with the abundance of couples in the book and felt it might have been better with a few less. So, I did a chart with their names to help me – yes, I was that invested in the book even though I had my own manuscript to get back to my editor for edits!

If you are thinking of getting married – get this book. I repeat run and buy this book.

Adesuwa O’Man Nwokedi has written a contemporary fast paced and authentic look at relationships in a fast-paced city that never sleeps and nobody is sending anybody. Everybody is out for themselves, judging themselves on their looks or their marriage status and worrying about what everyone thinks about them as they negotiate their position up or down on the scale of the Nigerian organogram of social status. Even in the marriage class there are undercurrents swirling around as attendees speculate about each other.

This is a story about ten couples that attend a marriage class to prepare them for marriage or to show them how prepared or unprepared they are for a lifetime commitment. Over the next few weeks some of the couples fall in love more deeply with each other, others can’t stand the sight of each other, others feel forced to attend, one is undecided as to whether she still wants her ex or not and others express concern with their partners mindsets on finance, life and the size of the wedding.

Most of the couples realise that sexual compatibility while very important does not mean they are compatible in the areas of life that are essential for lifetime union and one of the couples is in a shot gun wedding situation.

Enough of the spoilers – this book will get any intending couple that reads it thinking about crucial ways on how things like compatibility, commitment, compromise, intimacy, communication, sacrifice and compromise can affect their marriage.

Couples that stood out for me most -

Best couples that exemplified sacrifice and compromise – Ewa and Sanya.
Best couple that exemplified the most authentic and sweet story (for me sha) Zulu and Ogechi.
Zulu had a soft spot for Ogechi but knew when to take a stand and not let her walk over him. Also, his nicknames for her like Egovin and Obi’m were heartwarming.

The one that served breakfast and got served breakfast – Itse.

I heard this has been optioned for a movie and its well deserved. Looking forward to watching it. With the abundance of great actresses and actors in Nollywood – this is going to be a must watch. Well done Adesuwa!

One Class. Ten Couples. Ten Decisions.

Imagine receiving marriage lectures with nine other couples alongside your partner. What vibes would it give? Weird? Interesting? Chaotic? Well, these were my thoughts before I read this book. 😂 This beautiful story provided answers to the many questions I had about marriage and helped me see a different light on the journey of a lifetime with your favourite person.

The story revolves around the lives of ten couples who attended marriage lectures together, led by a husband and wife duo, Maxwell and Ifeyinwa. Despite being married for twenty-six years, Maxwell and Ifeyinwa are still very much in love with each other, which I truly admire. 😍

The class begins with the "getting-to-know-you" segment, and I found it challenging to remember the names of each couple. As the story progressed, I got to know and understand them better through the topics discussed in the class. It was interesting to read about ten distinct love stories, which taught me that people marry for various reasons beyond love. For instance, one couple plans to get married because of an unexpected pregnancy, another couple plans to tie the knot despite one partner's lack of interest, and yet another couple has been dating for nineteen years. Additionally, there's a couple in a long-distance relationship who haven't met in person, and there's a woman who still isn't over her ex but wants to get married.

I highly recommend this story to couples planning to get married, as it provides valuable insights into what marriage entails and guides them in making decisions about building a home together. Ms Adesuwa explores themes such as love, infidelity, commitment issues, insecurities, and the effects of past relationships on marriage, understanding, settling for a partner, and all things connected to relationships and marriage in general. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and learned several important lessons from it.

It was surprising to discover that the couple I doubted would last ended up crossing the finish line together. I was excited for Bianca when she finally met Prince; she got her long-awaited happy ending.💃 I felt for Abi, though. How can you be stalking your ex, especially someone who treated you poorly? Raymond, her fiancé, is a good guy, so it’s her loss; I hope she learns. Then Omasan just wasted nineteen years of her life for nothing. Nawa oo.

Marriage Class by @adesuwaonwokedi is a book that tells the story of ten couples who took marriage classes with different relationship challenges. The themes include commitment, love language, and relationship dynamics.
All the stories had conflicts that didn’t sound out of this world. There were relationship problems you have heard about people around or even experienced in your relationship.

Kris and Bola — An older woman with a younger man.
Ak and Chioma — Beauty and the Beast, lol (handsome man versus a not “not-so-good-looking woman).
Ogechi and Zulu — Polish versus uncouth.
Omasan and Itse — Two people wanting different things in life.
Eric and Ivie — Older man versus younger woman.
Nosa and Nkoyo — Knocked up situation.
Bianca and Prince — International fiancé.
Boma and April — Physical attraction.
Sanya and Ewa — Rich versus vain
Finally, my least favourite Abi and Raymond. To be fair, I liked Raymond. He was one of those men who knew what they wanted and would do everything to keep showing how much they loved. Abi, on the other hand, reminded me of women with coconut heads who never realise what is in front of them until it is gone. I was really surprised by how Abi and Raymond ended. I would have wanted her to cry harder😂 Raymond was too good for her.
I felt so sad for Itse, who dated Omasan for nineteen years, and it turned out they wanted different things.
I loved Ak and Chioma because I understood how she felt each time she told herself, “This couldn’t be true”.
I think the person I didn’t see any hope with was Bianca. I literally screamed while I read her part. I didn’t see that coming.
Sanya and Ewa’s story had me thinking, “When is he going to realise and be done with her”. Alas! She grew, and I was so happy about their story.
For Ivie and Eric, I saw the end from their second scene when he gave in. I said, “This man has loved up stubbornness will not allow him find love a third time”.

The unique plot and well-written narration make this book enjoyable, making it a potential TV mini-series.

I recommend this book.

I don't know why the topic of marriage is so intriguing that I'll always read or talk about it. My Facebook feed is filled with topics about marriages, so when I saw this book, I knew right there that I'll read it.

So this book is about ten different couples with different love dynamics, stories, and personalities, all attending a wedding class in Lagos State, Nigeria. We see how different decisions affect and influence their views about each other.

Now I'll be starting with Abi&Raymond- my least favorite couple out of the ten, but anyway, Abi doesn't like the easy love Raymond shows her, so we see how she self-sabotages her new-found love with her ex. It is very funny how she sees all the red flags in her ex, and subconsciously she wants him back because, according to her, "Raymond love is too easy."

Ngozi&Zulu- the Igbo love duo, 😂, Ngozi never saw herself loving an uncouth man, so to speak, but what can she do when she is losing numbers "age wise"? But eventually, love prevailed 😌. I was so happy for them 💕.

Ewa&Sanya- my favorites out of the ten, We see Ewa grow from the materialistic lady she was to someone who was willing to improve herself. She listened and headed to the advice of her man, if you no love who fit pay 14million naira debt who Ewa wan love nah😂😂

Bianca&Prince- just like Abi I thought they wouldn't make it because it was just too much. How did they do it? Long distance for almost 3 years or so. This can only happen when there is communication, truth, and mutual love between two people who have determined that they will do everything possible to make their relationship work.

April&Boma- these two, oh my God 😫😫😫😫
Kris&Bola- I had this thought that why will Bola date someone twice his age, but I guess love knows no bounds. When you know, you know.

Chioma&A.K- the beauty and the beast situation 😂😂😂 and no it is not the man that is the beast 😐😐 throughout the book I tried to imagine what the beast 😐looks like but I just can't 😂😂😂😂 chai A.K got his work cut out for him geezzzz

Ivie&Eric- a reverse of Kris and Bola situation 😐

Nkoyo&Nosa- a child can't bring people who are not in love together; it is better to co-parent.

Omasan&Itse—these two i felt for Omasan particularly nineteen years just thrown away like that😐😐

I wish some of the couples stories had run off particularly itse & omasan 😫

Adesuwa's Marriage Class read like a compilation of mini love stories woven together so seamlessly, you don't know where one ends and the other begins. The switch was also very well done, I didn't feel lost at all.

I loved all the couples. Sanya, was my favorite guy. Ivie was my favorite girl. I loved Zulu and Oghechi's romance. Zulu reminds me of someone I know, but my absolute fav couple was Ak and Chioma.🥰🥰🥰

Chioma is your unconventional heroine. She represents a very underrepresented group of women who struggle to look like others but feel the weight of the world's judgement on their non conformity to beauty standards. Ak was the guy whose unwavering devotion to her lay in the simple fact that his love for her was based, not on looks, but on his ability to be himself with her. She just couldn't understand/ accept it.

The chapter on intimacy explored their storyline and brought to the forefront the very thing that is a huge challenge in many relationships today- cleaving to one another for reasons that have stronger roots than looks.

I love that the marriage classes were short enough to introduce a key element in the foundation for a successful marriage, which became an anchor for their individual stories. I loved that issues were highlighted in realistic ways and I love that the marriages represented a diverse range of relationships with age differences, social class, long distance relationships and unwanted pregnancy. I love that all the couples had a befitting end to their stories 🥰

It was challenging remembering all the names and couples but a few stood out. Particularly the couple whose story it was the whole book was hinged on.

A fantastic read. Well done. I think I've given away too much. Please go grab your copy!!!!

A Tale of Love, Loss, and Unlikely Unions

Set in Nigeria🇳🇬, "The Marriage Class" follows a group of ten couples as they navigate the complexities of love and commitment. The central character, Abi, finds herself torn between her fiancé, Raymond, and her ex, Lucas. While Raymond is deeply devoted to her, Abi's lingering feelings for Lucas complicate their relationship🥵

The story unfolds through the lens of pre-marital counselling sessions, where the couples are presented with ten crucial decisions to make about their compatibility. As the classes progress, some relationships crumble under the pressure of the upcoming weddings , while others blossom unexpectedly.

While "The Marriage Class" is set in Nigeria, its themes and character dynamics resonate with modern women and marriages worldwide. The story highlights several issues that continue to be relevant in contemporary relationships:"The unconventional love story of a woman who is older or one that earns more than her partner challenges traditional gender roles and suggests that love can transcend societal expectations."

Perhaps the most surprising twist involves Bianca and Prince, who have never met in person rather online but find themselves drawn to each other. Their unconventional love story culminates in a beautiful wedding 💍 defying expectations and proving that true love can come from the most unexpected places.

I was completely captivated by this piece.
Highly recommend!

This book was recommended by the Instagram algorithms believe it or not . It showed up on my explorer page and I decided to take a gamble on it based on this review as I rarely if ever read Romance.

I am thoroughly enjoying it and endorse the reviewer’s sentiments !

“The plot is fresh and interesting — the storyline is relatable and true to a Nigerian experience. If you’re a Nigerian millennial, you’ve most likely heard about the concept of marriage classes that intending couples have to take to be certified ready by a religious institution, mostly churches.

It’s so brilliant to centre a romantic novel in this setting, exploring relationship dynamics through that lens. The narration is great (I loved the shifting timelines as the backstories unfolded) and while there are a number of characters (10 couples so we’re taking at least 20 main players), we get just enough information and we don’t lose sight of any of them.

The ending was so well done. There are lessons but the prose does come off as preachy. It’s reminiscent of a chick lit and I can totally see it being a limited TV series with a much more expanded storyline. I know I’m only saying that because I wish the book was longer. “

Ten couples
Ten classes
One destination

💍The idea that two people who until they met each other were practically strangers will come together and live under one roof and love each other forever is scary and this book enunciates all the ways a marriage could go wrong but also it’s beauty and sanctity.

💍The marriage class follows the lives and relationships of ten different couples thrown together into one boiling pot of a marriage course that goes ahead to strip their individual relationships apart and bares before them the decision of weather to Say I do or I don’t

💍I love how very realistic and relatable these couples are; these are situations we’ve either heard about or experienced personally one way or the other.
I felt like this was low key free therapy or couples counseling because you could learn a lot from the well of wisdom poured into this book.

💍This was such an interesting read and I love that I was a part of the thought process and having beta read it, I couldn’t be more proud of the final outcome.

Ten couples, ten sessions, who will make it to “I do?”

When I first saw the cover of this book, it reeled me, I didn’t know what to expect, but diving in, I realized I was in the deep end and wasn’t ready to come up for air.

Nwokedi, not only kept you intrigued with the characters, but from her writing, the differing dynamics of each couples’ relationship and decision day. I was at the end of my seat wondering which couples would make it to the aisle and which one wouldn’t.

The couples that did and didn’t make it, took me by surprise. From opposites to financially unstable. From different social classes to divorcees, age gaps and long distance relationships. Each relationship carried its own spark, its own mishaps and its own end.

It made you stop and think about the reality of what such a commitment means. To do life with someone flaws and all. It’s not the easiest task and sometimes we may want something that we aren’t actually ready for.

Marriage isn’t just about it being time, but a lot of understanding, learning, accepting and loving.

First of all, the book cover had my whole interest at first glance. This novel introduces us to ten very diverse couples and how they all converge in a bi-weekly marriage class in Yaba, Lagos.
The narrator for most part of the book happens to be Abi who is still in love with her ex despite being few months away from getting to the altar herself.
At first I thought the variety of characters whose stories were being told in this book was going to be a problem but the author did so well in telling the stories of these couples individually as well as blending them together when and where necessary.
I loved the interesting dynamics between these couples and trust me, with each couple, I loved their ending even for those that didn't eventually make it to the altar.
This is a feel good kind of book that addresses serious life issues people face in romantic relationships and the words just flowed. Yeah, this is the kind of book you would read in a heartbeat.

As always, Adesuwa writes some of the best romance stories out there. This book was such a refreshing read. Ten couples in a marriage class, what a concept! It was wonderful to see the unique dynamics of each couple: their issues, struggles, and stages in their relationships.

I really appreciated how the book explored their incompatibilities, compatibilities, communication styles, love languages, and capacity for empathy. It gave a layered look into real relationship challenges and growth. Honestly, I think this is a must-read for anyone in a relationship or considering marriage. The book touches on so many important conversations and lessons couples can learn from.

It was heartfelt, insightful, and just a joy to read. Ten out of ten. A thousand percent recommend. So far, I don’t think Adesuwa has missed, every book has been a hit.

Nice light read. Quite entertaining. Character development was a bit light and the decisions of the characters were so flimsily driven. A lot of couples had no business ending up together, but they were written so out of baseless sentimentality. A lot of couples who had critical unresolved issues ended up together just because both parties 'felt' they couldn't do without each other. I mean, there's absolutely no reason Ogechi and Zulu should have ended up together. She had so much contempt for him, and that could just not be written away. Same as Raymond and Abi. What was that ending?

Anyway, it was a light read and easy page turner, to best enjoy it, just don't think too deeply about it.

I liked this book, it was well written and encapsulated the ideals of marriage within the African culture well.
With ten couples and 20 different perspectives I did find it hard to keep up with each persons story and challenges, and would’ve loved some sort of story arch visual tree to reference. I liked that this was written honestly with some relationships making it through the ups and downs and others dissolving. I definitely feel this story could be adapted into a Netflix series lol you could really envision the characters and the environments they were in beautifully. I would recommend this book as a great beach read.

This was such an interesting and refreshing read. The author explores various topics relating to marriage, from intimacy, communication, compatibility and many more. I really enjoyed the multiple POVs and how the author was able to tell the stories of the different couples. The characters names were a lot in the beginning but I got used to it, my favorite couples were Kris and Bola, Chioma and A.K. Abi and Raymond’s story really reminded me of Gina and Tobenna in No perfect love.

This is the 4th book by Adesuwa I’m reading this year and I think it is tied with “No perfect love" as my favorite.
