Pack Discipline #3

The Duty of a Beta

Rate this book
Caught between duty and sweet temptation, what’s a wolf to do?

Gunnar has a job to do. He was brought into the pack to be mated to Alfred and that’s what he’s going to do. Beta’s have always been charged with taking control of the trouble makers in their packs, and Gunnar is going to do his duty by his new pack if it kills him.

Just because his eyes constantly stray towards another wolf, that’s no reason to alter his plans. His alphas might believe in love matches, but Gunnar believes in duty—no matter how sweet the temptation to let his thoughts wander to a very different wolf might be.

The story continues with more wolf shifters.

description

This was a bit dull compared to the other two.

I really liked the powerplay in the previous books, with the submissive being someone you would not expect.

Gunnar is the new beta of the pack and is supposed to be mated to Alfred, the trouble maker of the pack. But Gunnar can’t keep his eyes off Talbot, the pack’s omega.

It is clear from the start that Gunnar is way more dominant than Talbot and both wolves are fine with that. Their power balance totally fits that of the pack hierarchy.

The main problem in this book is the fact that Gunnar is supposed to be courting Alfred and not Talbot. This felt a bit too artificial for me.

description

Because if Gunnar just went to the alphas and told them he was in love with Talbot and didn’t want to be mated to Alfred, all would have been fine. But because they were sneaking behind everyone’s back it turned out to be a huge problem (at first).

Not a lot of BDSM in this one. None actually, not even bondage. It’s only emphasized that Talbot is clearly submissive to the more dominant Gunnar, which is pretty common in shifter books.

I am very curious to see how Caden, Gunnar’s younger brother, will be able to handle Alfred. So on to the next!

Another nice instalment of Pack Discipline :)

To be honest, Gunnar wasn't my favourite MC of the pack but...
But Talbot more than compensated for his mate's gruffness :D
It's Talbot and his adorable blushing, and his unwavering faith and trust in Gunnar that saved the 4-star rating for me ;)

Talbot is the little, scared, somewhat fussed over omega that stole the heart of the dominating, strong and confident beta, Gunnar. Talbot is also very brave and determined and his courage in the face of their alphas' wrath won me over completely! As Gunnar said, Talbot is stronger than anyone suspects and he needs to feel worthy of his pack.

Gunnar's manners, his scowling and glaring and incessant suspicions that the other wolves want to challenge him - all of that made me think that he's a total jerk! But... Underneath it all I found a caring heart and a deep love towards his smaller mate... And it was so heart-warming!

The true, pure submission is not a weakness...

Gunnar was quite sure that he was the only wolf there who would ever guess that he’d been just as thoroughly claimed as Talbot had been, that he was just as owned as the younger man would ever be, and the omega barely had to raise his voice to do it.

As he reluctantly let go of Talbot’s hand and turned to accept the congratulations of the other members of the pack, he immediately met Marsdon’s eyes. And suddenly he was very sure that at least one other wolf knew that it was quite easy for a dominant wolf, even an alpha wolf, to be owned right down to the core.

The BDSM aspect was still present in this part but to much smaller extent. I still loved it!

Recommended to all of you who love a big bad wolf being captured by a sweet and gentle omega! ;)

What happens if you fall in love with the "wrong" person? Not a question that is asked very often in our world, because arranged marriages, to our thinking, are not the way things should be done. I thought it was very interesting how Kim Dare picked up this concept and played with it here.

Gunnar knows that as the Beta he's expected to mate the troublemaking Alfred, and he accepts his fate to the point of self-denial. Even when he finally admits he's in love with Talbot, he refuses to change their fates by owning up to this love. Duty is far more important to him than love. This made me furious. But then, I am most certainly not a Beta, nor a werewolf, so I wouldn't be able to understand or sympathize with this sort of thinking in a million years. So all I could do is accept this, admire how realistic Kim Dare had drawn this character to make me so mad at him, as if he were a real person, and hope for the best.

Talbot is about the most submissive Omega in history. He does have his own ideas (like his love for Gunnar and his willingness to seduce him), but he will only own up to them under the most extreme circumstances. Well, let me tell you, circumstances get extreme due to Gunnar's idiotic stubbornness. And when needed, Talbot does stand up for himself and Gunnar - in a totally Omega way, of course.

In this volume Kim Dare takes the preconceptions about duty and love, and which partner in a D/s relationship is the one who stands up for the pairing, and turns them upside down. I like this idea, even if I still can't believe Gunnar wouldn't have figured out that his Alphas (a love match if there ever was one!) wouldn't accept the fact that he'd fallen for another werewolf than the one they'd picked for him. I mean, really! If you like strong characters, who need yelling at while you're reading because they're a bit slow on the take-up, you will probably like this book.

I've been wanting to read this book for awhile because the idea of it, the big brooding, strong beta and the sweet, shy beautiful omega is so my kink. I didn't read the first two books, but again, had to read this one. And I'm so glad I did. I just loved it. Gunnar is so hot and Talbot is so submissive and learning how the pack works was very interesting. I liked how surprised Gunnar was when love triumphed and he learned that his pack alphas are really good guys. I suspect that not believing in them, as they have a reported love match, was his own failing and not theirs. It seems that if everyone communicated a bit more...all would be better. But Gunnar's all man so he’s not talking and Talbot only can with permission, their relationship dynamic is pretty well set. But the thing about Gunnar is that he builds Talbot up and he’s the only one who ever has and Talbot has taught Gunnar that faith can be rewarded. They are interlocking puzzle pieces and I enjoyed seeing them grow as people. I thoroughly enjoyed this and look forward to the next one.

Even with Gunnar's perpetual bad mood and lack of humor I found this to be my favorite of this series so far. It was nice to finally see the prick smile.

Very good kinky paranormal m/m romance about a beta wolf who was brought into the pack to be mated to a troublemaking gamma, but who finds himself drawn to the omega...

This was a really good story. Again, not much world-building is in these stories, but goodness, the author sure knows how to write characters that will give you feels. Gunnar is a newish beta who has been brought into the pack to mate with another wolf shifter named Alfred. But ever since stepping foot into the pack, he's found himself attracted to someone who he shouldn't be attracted to - a young omega named Talbot. I've loved precious Talbot since the first story. He's portrayed as a character the rest of the pack dotes on and makes sure he never has hard work to do when they carry out their chores. Big bad beta Gunnar has responsibilities that his alphas have set out for him, like mating with another, but the heart wants what the heart wants.

This one is filled with a bit more angst than the last two, I think. Gunnar and Talbot both want to be together, but Talbot knows he's at the bottom of the hierarchy and wants to spend what time he can with Gunnar, any way he can get it. Talbot is a darling submissive and eager to please. I love that Gunnar doesn't accept everyone's thinking that Talbot is weak, and has the potential to be a strong wolf. He pushes Talbot outside what he's used to (like doing physical tasks usually left to bigger wolves).

I loved the turning point in this book that finally declares what Gunnar and Talbot mean to one another. Although the ending felt a bit rushed, I still very much liked this book. It's sexy and the characters are fantastic. The BDSM aspect isn't as big in this story, but that doesn't make the sex scenes any less hot. Gunnar and Talbot are adorable and lovely and I would definitely read this again.

Re-reading 10/29/12: I still love this story. The characters are so perfect for each other. I loved how Gunnar knew to assign Talbot a tougher job within the pack to get him to be more confident in himself.

Two stars because I did not like the MC at all. Gunnar is a big-time pain in the neck and he does not really redeem himself. In the end I really couldn't care less about his love woes.

Having read both The Mark of an Alpha and The Strength of a Gamma I desperately wanted to read Talbot's story. I've loved his character since Book 1. This book, though, took some willpower to get through. First, I agree with the review that says you need to read the prior books, Mark of an Alpha at least, to remotely care about this story. Without that you will probably feel zero connection to Talbot. I love his character and I still struggled. I kept checking to see how far I was from the end. The book is bogged down with so much mundane detail, it seriously detracts from the overall story. Pages and pages of detailed descriptions of laundry duty and fence repair. Why do we care?? I also agree that referring to the characters as 'the older man' or 'the beta' or 'the darker man'was distracting and lame. Just say his name already!! Even worse, the sex scenes were blah. Entirely too mechanical and lacking any heat.

As for the Beta/omega, D/s element, the author went around in so many circles I was confused at the end. It's almost like she tried too hard to write the roles and ended up bungling them. The Strength of a Gamma suffered the same fate. She didn't have this problem writing the alphas, even though one of them is a complete submissive. It's hard to believe that this is the same author. The last 2 books of this series pale in comparison to the first, which I have read at least three times. In The Mark of an Alpha, the voices there were clear, Bennett's struggle was believable and the sex was hot! Totally different feel compared to the last two. It's actually funny (not really) that the first book - strongest book of the series - is the least expensive. The subsequent 2 books are nowhere worth $6+ (Kindle edition).

I kept with it till the end because I DO like Talbot, and it was obvious that the characters care for each other..plus any appearance by Marsdon and Bennett is worth a read...but I couldn't help but feel that Gunnar could have been better written and a more loving mate for Talbot. Heck, Steffan is better with him. It seems like the next book in the series will be Alfred/Caden's story, and though I dislike Alfred intensely this could be an interesting read if done right. Considering I've liked each book in this series less than the one before it, I might be setting myself up for disappointment but I'm willing to give this series one more try.

Read this if you've read the first two books and want to read Talbot's story. As a stand-alone, you may be very disappointed.

This is a story that starts off with a sensual bang between two unlikely werewolves. The Duty of a Beta will definitely keep you turning the pages until the very end just to see what will happen.

Gunner and Talbot are complete opposites. This is a story that runs along the lines of Romeo and Juliet. Two people in love yet circumstances and rankings in life keep them apart. The pull between these two men is so evident that the scenes they share are just jumping with erotic energy.

Gunner, being a beta wolf, was brought to the pack to mate with a gamma wolf. Little did he know the omega of the pack was what he really wanted. At first glance Gunner comes off extremely stubborn, controlling, and lacking basic human emotions. We soon find out that it’s in a beta wolf's instincts to take control.

Talbot is an omega wolf. This basically means he's super submissive. He’s young and inexperienced and the type of character you want to keep safe from the big bad wolves of the world. He’s been treated like a weakling all his life due to his small stature. His life is turned upside down when Gunner joins his pack. The overbearing nature of Gunner attracts Talbot in ways he can’t explain but he knows he wants to explore.

The controlling nature of Gunner complemented the submissive nature of Talbot. This is a story that will have you guessing. Will they or won’t they? Will honor and duty override love? Or will love conquer all in the end?

This book had a different take on the omega wolf that I really liked. In most books the omega wolf is treated very poorly but not in Kim Dare’s werewolf world. Talbot was treated with respect and loved by all others. The one thing I wished there was more of in this story was more dialogue between Gunner and Talbot. In the story we get more of what they were thinking and feeling versus what they said to one another. Overall, though, this was an excellent read. I highly recommend it.

To falling in love with the right person, even when you don’t realise how right they are at the time.

This book began with a squeal. My squeal. When I realized who the pairing was. Because no, I had not been looking forward to Gunnar and Alfred, liking neither of them that much. But it’s not about Gunnar and his intended. It’s about Gunnar and his unintended. <3

The story is sweet and full of devotion and love yet again. Interestingly enough, I don’t not get much of a D/s vibe here, even though that’s what this relationship is. In this case more than others it feels to me like any dominance and submission occurring simply results from the nature, the very core of the two involved. While that is true for all of this author’s protagonists so far, here the trappings are entirely unnecessary; everything works by sheer personality. (I am making a complete mess of explaining what I mean. @.@)

Anyway, again I really love to watch Bennett and Marsdon’s relationship evolve in the background. They’re both so clearly happy, and their public or semi-public interactions are so clearly those of equals that it makes my heart, er, burst into sappy love songs? XD It’s a distinct possibility.

Ah, one more book to go. This should be interesting. By the way, it’s so refreshing to be reading finite series instead of those that go on forever, much like soap operas, and gather drama and bleakness and threats along the way to keep the audience’s interest alive. I loved this author’s other four-volume shifter series just as much. Planning a series out works so well for shorter volumes. If it were full-sized novels set in a shared world but maybe not in the exact same space, an endless series seems perfectly fine. (Such as the Avian Shifters. I have no problem at all with it if they keep going for a long, long while, heh.) This is different. And awesome, did I mention awesome yet?

Review of series...

I have read the first 3 (of 4) books in this series & I must confess that I am underwhelmed ... these are the first books I have ever read by Kim Dare where I'm not left raving about how wonderful they are ... I found the Pack Discipline series to be lackadaisical ... poor character development ... lackluster plot ... unexciting kink ... Kim Dare is a prolific author & I'll still automatically buy & read her books but I have read much better books by her ... perhaps I hold her to a higher standard? ... better than a lot of dross out there but Dare has done so much better.

The third book of this series doesn't disappoint. It's in Kim Dare style with the light BDSM, the sweetness balanced with just the right touch of angst. I would hesitate to say I loved this story best of the three (so far), but I have such a fondness for Talbot, ever since the first book when Talbot didn't want to fight Bennett, and how Bennett eased him through it.

In this book, we also see a side of Gunner we didn't in 'Strength of a Gamma'. Almost palatable, his wanting warred with knowing his duty. I loved how he was always there to protect Talbot, but also there to encourage him to expand and grow where others had only cossetted and applied limitations.

3.5 Stars. I liked it; didn't love it. The pacing was very fast, faster than the rest of the books in the Pack Discipline series. Maybe I had high expectations. I purchased this the day it was released and since Duck! I've wanted more from Kim. When she delivers it's awesome. I just couldn't warm up to Gunnar. He just reeked of selfish asshole :/ If you're in the mood for a quickie shifter romance this is the book for you, if not I recommend reading the whole series as one book. It's Kim so *shrug* I have to like it. :P

As much as I liked Talbot, for some reason Gunnar didn't do it for me. I liked the story again, yet this was my least favorite in the series. I almost enjoyed the outside the main couple sub-plot-stuffs more than some of the main storyline... Weird.

Anyways, I still liked it and it was good as a part of a series. :)

Okay I can't read about weak, whiny little men! That being said Kim Dare created a wolf who was so interesting, compassionate and inhibited that I was mesmerized. Talbot was who he was and Gunnar is the wolf who can see the whole man/wolf, not just Talbot's place in the pack. This series also lets us watch the entire pack grow strong together.

These books need to be read in order!

The Duty of a Beta explores the idea of duty vs want/desire.

Talbot and Gunnar fit one another as well as they fit their role/rank in the pack.

Gunnar is a Beta, he is controlling, domineering and bossy. He doesn't want a mate who will challenge him or question him. This is who he is.

Talbot is an Omega and naturally submissive, timid, quiet and could even go as far as being a doormat. But once again, this is who he is, and he wants the big, strong, protective Beta to take care of him.

They provide each other with the exact kind of relationship that they desire. However, Gunnar is promised to another, and he has a duty to fulfill to his pack. His emotions and feelings aren't important.

This was fine, these two are sweet together... I am just over this type of dynamic so it didn't hold my interest or captivate me unfortunately.

This really isn't my favorite Kim Dare series, but I did like this story a little better than the others in the series. I almost rounded it up to the four stars as it was really a 3.5 Star read. Look Talbot is a sweet, sweet little soul who appreciates the strength of Gunnar and vice versa. But as much as I liked these two together as a couple there really wasn't all that much to this story.

This is a simple story without a lot of depth behind it. If you're in the mood for an "awwwww, make you smile" type story than this is perfect, but there's not a lot of character development. The plot is really simplistic, and the result is incredibly predictable. Still I found myself smiling at Talbot as he tentatively got to hope he might get to have his wolf for his very own.

I must have reread this book 10000 time. Kim Dare has a way with dominance and submission that is unmatched. I have searched for years on end for an author who writes like this and have failed miserably. So in love. 10/10!!!
